Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to buy an electricity token on OPay

Buying a prepaid electricity token on OPay step by step, what to check before you pay, and what to do if the token does not arrive or will not load.

The short answer

In the OPay app, open Electricity under bill payments, choose your distribution company (DisCo), select prepaid, enter your meter number, check the customer name that appears, enter the amount and confirm with your PIN; the token is shown in the receipt. OPay's site says bill payments carry no extra charge. If the token does not arrive, check your transaction history for it, then report the reference to OPay support; if it arrived but will not load, the problem is usually with the meter or the DisCo.

Before you pay

Three details decide whether a token works, and all three are on your meter or your last receipt:

  • Your DisCo. The company that serves your area, not necessarily the one your landlord names. Note that Aba is served by Aba Power, not EEDC, which still catches people out.
  • Meter type. Prepaid meters take tokens; postpaid accounts pay a bill. Picking the wrong type sends money to the wrong product.
  • Meter number. Printed on the meter and on past receipts. Copy it from the meter itself, not from memory.

OPay's public website does not list the DisCos it supports; the list is inside the app's Electricity screen. If your DisCo is missing, buy from the DisCo's own channels instead. Make sure your OPay balance covers the amount before you start, because a payment interrupted halfway is the hardest kind to trace and can leave you waiting for both a token and a refund.

Steps to buy the token

  1. Open the OPay app and tap Electricity (under bill payments or 'Pay bills').
  2. Choose your DisCo from the list.
  3. Select Prepaid.
  4. Enter your meter number. Wait for the customer name and address to appear and confirm they match your meter.
  5. Enter the amount. Read the confirmation screen: it shows what you pay and any charge. OPay's website says bill payments carry no extra charge; the screen is the final word.
  6. Approve with your transaction PIN.
  7. Open the receipt and copy the token number exactly. Keep a screenshot.

Then key the token into the meter's keypad and press enter. Our explainer how prepaid electricity tokens work explains units and tariff bands.

Worked example

Example: you buy ₦10,000 of electricity. The units your meter receives depend on your band's tariff, set by NERC and applied by your DisCo, and any outstanding debt the DisCo deducts from your purchase. If a meter has ₦2,000 of debt flagged against it, the DisCo may recover part of it from each purchase, so fewer units arrive than ₦10,000 alone would buy. The token receipt or the DisCo shows the breakdown. Check your band in NERC bands A to E.

Postpaid accounts and buying for someone else

Postpaid

If your premises has a postpaid account, choose Postpaid instead and enter the account number on your bill rather than a meter number. Check the name and the outstanding amount the app retrieves, then pay all or part of it. No token is issued; the payment reduces the balance the DisCo shows on your next bill. Keep the receipt in case the payment is not reflected, and see prepaid vs postpaid electricity if you are deciding whether to switch.

Paying for a parent, tenant or shop

  • Ask for a photo of the meter showing the number, rather than a number typed in a message.
  • Confirm the DisCo with them, especially near the boundary between two DisCo areas.
  • Check that the customer name the app retrieves is theirs before you approve.
  • Send them the token as text so they can type it, and keep the receipt yourself in case it needs to be traced.

Saving the meter as a beneficiary in the app, where that option appears, cuts the chance of a typing mistake next time.

If the token does not arrive

  1. Open your OPay transaction history and tap the electricity payment. The token often appears in the details even when no SMS came.
  2. If the status is pending, wait a short while; DisCo systems sometimes respond slowly.
  3. If the status is failed but you were debited, report it through the support chat on that transaction with the reference, meter number and amount. OPay's FAQ describes the same route for failed transfers, and our guide OPay failed transaction not reversed sets out the timelines and escalation.
  4. If the status is successful but there is no token, ask OPay support to retrieve it from the DisCo using the reference.

If the token arrived but will not load

Message or symptomLikely causeNext step
'Reject' or 'Invalid'Digits mistyped, or token for a different meterRe-enter carefully; compare the meter number on the receipt
'Used' or 'Old'Token already loadedCheck whether units went up
Accepted but few unitsDebt recovery or tariff bandAsk your DisCo for the vend breakdown
Meter says it needs a key change tokenMeter update by the DisCoContact your DisCo for the key change tokens

When the token is correct but the meter refuses it, the DisCo, not OPay, has to fix it. Our guide electricity token not loading covers the fixes in detail, and bill payment failed but debited covers the money side.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme customers can pay electricity in the app, and a Personal Assistant can prepare a recurring token purchase for you to approve. See electricity on Pryme.

Questions people ask

How do I buy NEPA light on OPay?

Open Electricity in the OPay app, choose your DisCo and prepaid, enter your meter number, confirm the name, enter the amount and approve with your PIN. The token is on the receipt.

Does OPay charge for electricity token?

OPay's website says bill payments carry no extra charge. The confirmation screen shows the final amount before you pay.

I paid for electricity on OPay but did not get token

Check the transaction details in your history first. If it failed or shows no token, report it to OPay support with the reference and meter number.

My OPay token is rejected by the meter

Check the digits and the meter number on the receipt. If both are right, contact your DisCo, because the meter or account is the problem.
