Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Prepaid vs postpaid electricity in Nigeria: which is better?

How prepaid meters and postpaid bills differ in Nigeria, what each costs you in control and risk, and how to move from estimated bills to a meter.

The short answer

With prepaid electricity you buy units first and the meter counts them down, so you only pay for what you use. With postpaid you use power first and your DisCo bills you afterwards, either from a meter reading or, if you have no meter, by estimate. For most households a working prepaid meter gives more control and fewer billing disputes.

The basic difference

Every electricity customer in Nigeria is served by a distribution company (DisCo) for their area. How you pay that DisCo depends on the meter at your premises, or the lack of one.

PrepaidPostpaid (metered)Postpaid (unmetered)

How to top up or payBuy a 20-digit tokenPay the billPay the bill

Your band (A to E) is separate from your meter type. Band is about the hours of supply your feeder is meant to deliver; prepaid or postpaid is about how you pay. Our guide to NERC electricity bands covers that side.

Why prepaid usually suits households better

  • You see what you are spending. The display shows units left, so you can change habits the same week rather than at the end of the month.
  • No surprise bills. There is no estimate to dispute, because you only receive the units you paid for.
  • Easier to share costs. In a compound with one meter per flat, each household tops up its own meter.
  • Easier to pay for someone else. Anyone with the meter number can buy a token and send it to the person at home.

Where prepaid can be awkward

  • If units run out at night and your bank app or vendor is down, you sit in the dark until the token arrives.
  • Tokens are tied to the meter number. A wrong digit means the token goes to someone else's meter, and getting it back depends on your vendor and DisCo.
  • Meters need occasional updates, such as the free key change tokens NERC asked customers to load before November 2024, when an old token counter in many meters ran out.

Postpaid: metered versus estimated

A postpaid customer with a working meter is billed on what the meter records. The problems are practical: readings missed, bills arriving late, or a backlog appearing after a meter fault.

An unmetered postpaid customer is billed by estimate. NERC's 2018 consultation on capping estimated bills described how DisCos estimate at feeder level: they take the energy delivered to the feeder, subtract what metered customers used, and spread the rest across unmetered customers by class. That is why two neighbours with very different usage can receive similar bills. NERC caps estimated bills for unmetered customers, and you can petition your DisCo if your bill looks out of line with your connected load. See estimated billing: your rights.

A worked example

Example only, with made-up numbers. Ada is unmetered and receives a monthly estimated bill of ₦30,000. After moving to a prepaid meter, she tracks her purchases for three months and finds she spends about ₦22,000 a month, because the household turns off the water heater when not in use and can see the units dropping. The saving will not apply to everyone; a heavy-use household could find prepaid costs more than a low estimate. What changes for certain is that she pays for her own consumption rather than a share of the feeder.

Which suits different households

SituationUsually betterWhy
Renting a flat in a shared compoundPrepaid, one meter per flatNo arguments over how to split a single bill
Elderly parents living alonePrepaidFamily can top up remotely and check usage on receipts
Small shop with steady daytime useEither, if meteredA metered postpaid bill is fair; prepaid gives tighter control
Unmetered home on large estimated billsPrepaid as soon as possibleEnds billing by estimate
Short-let or rental propertyPrepaidGuests or tenants pay for their own use

If you share a meter

Many compounds still share one meter between several flats. Prepaid helps a little, because each top-up is visible, but disputes still arise over who used what. If you are a landlord, separate meters are the cleaner fix. If you are a tenant, agree in writing how purchases are split and keep every receipt.

Moving house

When you move into a property with a prepaid meter, ask the landlord or outgoing tenant for the meter number and check with the DisCo that there is no outstanding debt on the account. Some DisCos recover arrears by deducting a share of each purchase, which would reduce the units you receive. On a postpaid account, ask for a final reading in the outgoing tenant's name before you move in.

How to move from postpaid to prepaid

  1. Contact your DisCo's customer care unit and ask about meter applications for your address.
  2. Ask whether a meter is available under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme or another programme, and what you would pay.
  3. Get any payment confirmation in writing and keep the receipt.
  4. After installation, check that your account has been moved to prepaid and that any old postpaid balance is shown clearly.

Under the 2018 MAP Regulations, a customer who pays upfront for a meter should have it installed within 10 working days of full payment. Our guide to getting a prepaid meter under MAP has the details.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme lets you buy electricity tokens for prepaid meters and pay postpaid bills from your account, with the token shown in the app and on your receipt. You can save meter numbers for family members and pay for them from wherever you are; our guide to paying bills for family from abroad covers that case. See electricity on Pryme. Personal Account customers can also ask their Personal Assistant Agent (Eva by default) to remind them before units are likely to run low; it prepares the payment and nothing moves until you approve it.

Questions people ask

Is prepaid meter cheaper than postpaid in Nigeria?

Not by tariff: your price per unit depends on your band and tariff class, not your meter type. Prepaid can cost less in practice because you pay for measured use rather than an estimate, and you can see usage as it happens.

Can I change from postpaid to prepaid meter?

Yes. Apply through your DisCo's customer care unit. Ask about the Meter Asset Provider scheme, get the cost in writing and keep every receipt.

Why is my postpaid bill so high with no meter?

Unmetered customers are billed by estimate, based on energy delivered to the feeder and shared across unmetered customers. NERC caps estimated bills; if yours looks out of line, complain in writing to your DisCo.

Does prepaid meter affect my band?

No. Your band is set by the supply hours on your feeder. Prepaid or postpaid only changes how you pay.
