Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to get a prepaid meter under the MAP scheme

Applying to your DisCo for a meter under the Meter Asset Provider scheme: what to pay, the 10-working-day rule and how to avoid fake installers.

The short answer

Apply to your DisCo for a meter; it inspects your premises and tells you what you would pay under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme. If you pay upfront, NERC's 2018 MAP Regulations say the meter should be installed within 10 working days of full payment. Only pay through channels your DisCo confirms in writing.

What the MAP scheme is

Nigeria has had a large metering gap for years. In 2018 NERC issued the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Regulations, which let DisCos appoint licensed third-party companies, called meter asset providers, to finance, supply and install meters. NERC counted a gap of about 4.7 million meters at the end of 2017. The MAP scheme sits alongside other meter programmes that DisCos and government run from time to time.

Two ways to pay

OptionHow it worksWhat you pay later
Upfront paymentYou pay the meter and installation cost at once, as authorised by your DisCoNo metering service charge for that meter
Metering service chargeThe MAP finances the meter and recovers the cost over timeA monthly metering service charge alongside your energy

The price is set through the DisCo's MAP procurement, not by the installer at your door. Ask your DisCo for the current price for your phase (single-phase or three-phase) and keep it in writing.

Step by step

  1. Apply to your DisCo. Use its website, customer care unit or local office. You will usually need your account number, a recent bill, your address and ID.
  2. Premises inspection. The DisCo checks your wiring and confirms whether you need single-phase or three-phase metering.
  3. Authorisation. You receive an authorisation stating the amount payable and the MAP that will install.
  4. Payment. Pay only to the account or channel the DisCo names. Keep the receipt and payment reference.
  5. Installation. Under the MAP Regulations, installation should happen within 10 working days of full upfront payment.
  6. Account update. Confirm your account has moved from postpaid to prepaid, and ask for a final statement of any old balance.
  7. First token. Buy a small first token to check everything works before buying a larger amount.

Avoiding meter scams

Meter demand attracts fraud. Common patterns include people posing as DisCo staff who collect cash for a meter that never arrives, and installers who fit a meter not registered to your account.

  • Never pay cash to an individual for a meter.
  • Never pay into a personal account. Payment should go to the account named in your DisCo's authorisation.
  • Ask installers for ID and confirm with the DisCo's customer care line, using a number from the DisCo's official website, not one the installer gives you.
  • After installation, make sure the meter number on your receipt matches the one fitted and that tokens load.

For wider advice on spotting fraud, see our guide to how to spot scams in Nigeria.

A worked example

Example only, with made-up figures. Chidi applies online on a Monday. The DisCo inspects his flat on Thursday and authorises a single-phase meter at the price stated in the letter. He pays through the channel named, on the following Monday, and gets a reference. The installer arrives the next Friday, within the 10 working days. Chidi checks the meter number against his receipt, buys a ₦2,000 test token, and it loads. His old postpaid statement shows a ₦6,500 balance; he agrees in writing how it will be recovered rather than having it taken unexpectedly from future tokens.

Landlords and tenants

Meters are fitted for an account at a property. Tenants should agree with the landlord before applying, since the account is usually in the landlord's name. Landlords with several flats on one meter may find separate meters end disputes over shared bills. The account holder should make the application.

Questions to ask before you pay

  • Which MAP will install, and how can I confirm it is appointed by the DisCo?
  • Is the price in the authorisation the full cost, including installation and any cabling?
  • If I choose the metering service charge, how much is it each month and for how long?
  • What happens to my outstanding postpaid balance?
  • Who do I contact if installation is late?

Getting these answers in writing before you pay means you have something to point to if the timeline slips or an installer asks for more money on the day.

After installation

  • Your band stays the same; it follows your feeder.
  • Keep the installation and payment receipts. You may need them if the meter develops a fault.
  • If the meter fails, report it in writing. NERC's 2018 paper proposed that a customer with a metering history should be billed on the average of the previous three months during a fault, not on a feeder estimate.
  • Read how prepaid tokens work so you know what to do if a token is rejected.

Where Pryme fits

Once your meter is in, you can buy tokens on Pryme and keep each token, amount and reference in your history. See electricity on Pryme. If you are saving towards an upfront meter payment, a Flexible Savings Box in naira keeps the money separate from day-to-day spending; see Savings Boxes.

Questions people ask

How much is a prepaid meter under MAP?

The price is set through your DisCo's MAP procurement and differs by DisCo and meter type. Ask your DisCo for the current price in writing before paying.

How long does it take to get a prepaid meter after payment?

Under NERC's MAP Regulations 2018, installation should be within 10 working days of full upfront payment.

Can my landlord stop me getting a prepaid meter?

The account is usually in the landlord's name, so the account holder normally applies. Agree with your landlord first.

Is it safe to pay an installer directly for a meter?

No. Pay only to the account or channel named in your DisCo's authorisation, and never in cash to an individual.
