Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

OPay POS charges for withdrawals and transfers

What OPay publishes about agent POS charges, the CBN rules on cash-back and merchant fees, how to price withdrawals for customers, and when money settles.

The short answer

OPay does not publish an agent POS fee schedule on its public website; the charge OPay takes on each withdrawal or transfer is shown in the OPay agent app and transaction records, and it can change. The CBN's 2020 Guide to Charges caps cash-back on a purchase at ₦100 per ₦20,000, within a ₦60,000 daily cumulative limit, and merchant service commission at 0.5% capped at ₦1,000. What an agent then charges the customer is a separate, local decision.

Two different charges people mix up

When someone asks 'how much does OPay charge on POS', they usually mean one of two things, and they are set by different people:

OPay's charge to the agent
What OPay deducts from the agent for processing a card withdrawal or transfer on its terminal. It is set by OPay and shown in the agent's records.
The agent's charge to the customer
The extra the agent asks the customer, for example ₦100 or ₦200 on a withdrawal. It is the agent's own price and is not set by OPay.

OPay's public website (checked October 2026) lists a separate line for POS business queries, 0700 8888 329 or 020 18888 329, but it does not print the agent fee schedule. If someone shows you a table of 'official OPay POS charges' in a WhatsApp group, ask OPay's POS line or check your agent app before relying on it.

What the CBN guide says about card cash and merchant fees

The CBN's Guide to Charges, in force since 1 January 2020, sets ceilings for CBN-licensed institutions. Two entries are relevant to POS work:

Item2020 CBN ceilingNotes
Purchase with cash-back₦100 per ₦20,000, subject to cumulative ₦60,000 daily withdrawalListed for banks, MFBs and PMBs
Merchant service commission (banks)0.50% of transaction value, not more than ₦1,000Charged to the merchant on card payments
Transfers (electronic funds transfer)₦10 below ₦5,000; ₦25 for ₦5,001 to ₦50,000; ₦50 above ₦50,000Applies to transfers made from bank and MFB accounts

The guide also says it 'is not exhaustive', and these figures are from 2020, so treat them as the regulatory frame. The figure on your OPay agent dashboard is what you actually pay.

Pricing withdrawals for customers

Customers compare agents on the street, so most agents set a simple, visible price. A fair approach is to start from what the transaction costs you and add a margin for cash handling, float and risk.

Worked example (illustrative numbers)

Example only, not OPay's fees: suppose your agent app shows a processing charge of ₦50 on a ₦20,000 card withdrawal, and you decide you need ₦100 to cover the cost of keeping cash on hand and the time spent. You would ask the customer for ₦150 on top, so they pay ₦20,150 by card and leave with ₦20,000 in cash. You receive ₦20,150, OPay deducts ₦50, leaving ₦20,100 in your wallet: ₦20,000 replaces the cash you paid out and ₦100 is your margin. Check: ₦20,150 − ₦50 − ₦20,000 = ₦100.

  • Display your charge clearly before you swipe, so customers do not feel cheated at the end.
  • Charge the same for everyone. Ad hoc pricing leads to arguments and complaints.
  • Give the customer the printed or digital receipt, which protects you in a dispute. Our guide chargebacks and reversals explains why.

Settlement and failed withdrawals

OPay's older FAQ says POS reversals are 'processed instantly' to the cardholder's account. If a reversal is approved but the cardholder is still debited, OPay says the cardholder should take it up with their own bank. It also advises letting the reversal finish before removing the card, or the terminal may fail to read it.

Under the CBN's May 2020 chargeback circular, as summarised by TNP on Mondaq, refunds on failed POS transactions should happen within 48 hours, and merchant-cardholder disputes are to be resolved within 48 hours. If a transaction is not credited to your wallet, OPay's FAQ says to report it in the Support tab with the transaction number and a screenshot of the receipt.

Records that protect your margin

Small charges add up, and agents who do not reconcile daily often find their margin has gone without knowing where. A simple end-of-day routine helps:

  1. Count cash in the drawer and note your opening and closing float.
  2. Compare the number of withdrawals on the terminal with the number in your notebook or sales app.
  3. Add up OPay's charges for the day from the agent records and compare them with the customer charges you collected.
  4. Flag any transaction marked pending or reversed and follow it up the same day with the Support tab.

If customer charges minus OPay's charges is falling week by week, either your pricing is too low or the charge structure has changed; check the agent app before you change your street price.

What to check first

  • The current charge on your OPay agent app or terminal records, not a figure from a group chat.
  • Your commission and payout rules; see how OPay pays agents.
  • The POS business line: 0700 8888 329 or 020 18888 329.
  • Card-trapping and fake-terminal tricks; see POS fraud in Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

For shops that take payment rather than give out cash, Pryme's bank-transfer checkout is free. See Pryme checkout and POS vs bank transfer.

Questions people ask

How much does OPay charge POS agents per withdrawal?

OPay does not publish an agent fee schedule on its public website. The charge on each transaction is shown in your OPay agent app or terminal records; call 0700 8888 329 to confirm.

How much should I charge for ₦10,000 POS withdrawal?

There is no official customer price; agents set their own. Work out your cost from the agent app, add a margin for cash handling and display the price before you swipe.

What is the CBN approved POS charge?

The 2020 CBN Guide to Charges caps cash-back on a purchase at ₦100 per ₦20,000, within a ₦60,000 daily limit, and merchant service commission at 0.5% capped at ₦1,000. It does not set the agent's own charge to customers.

OPay POS withdrawal failed but customer was debited

OPay says reversals are processed to the cardholder's account; if the customer is still debited, they should contact their bank. Failed POS refunds should happen within 48 hours under the CBN's 2020 circular.
