Ten years, one trunk

2023Multicurrency

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Using a Nigerian naira card in the US: does it work?

Some Nigerian naira cards now work in the US within dollar limits; others are blocked abroad. What banks publish, the cost, and what to check first.

The short answer

It depends on the bank. Some Nigerian banks allow naira Visa and Mastercard debit cards to be used in the US within a dollar limit, which several raised in 2026: GTBank's naira card limit was reported at $40,000 a quarter in August 2026. Others do not: Fidelity says individual naira cards are not permitted for international transactions. Every US payment is converted at the bank's own rate, so check your bank's limit and rate before relying on the card.

Why naira cards are a special case

A naira debit card spends naira. When you tap it in Houston, the bank has to find dollars to settle the payment with the card network, at its own rate. During the dollar shortage of recent years, banks cut international limits on naira cards hard; some suspended them. As FX supply improved in 2026, several raised limits again. The result is a patchwork, and it changes, so read your bank's latest notice rather than an old forum post.

What banks and reports say (as at autumn 2026)

GTBank$40,000 per quarterCustomer email reported by Business Post, 12 Aug 2026; Nairametrics, 7 Sep 2026
FirstBankNaira Mastercard $10,000 per quarter POS and web; ATM $1,000 a dayNairametrics, 7 Sep 2026

Stanbic IBTCFAQ: $100 a month across POS, web and ATM; Nairametrics reported $8,000 a quarter on MastercardStanbic FAQ (live page) and Nairametrics, 7 Sep 2026; check which applies
Fidelity BankNot permitted: individual naira cards cannot be used internationallyFidelity FAQs

These figures are from the dates shown and can change without notice. Your bank's app, website or customer service gives today's limit, and the card type matters: a bank may treat its premium naira card differently from its standard one.

What it costs

Two costs apply. First, the conversion: the bank turns the dollar amount into naira at its own rate, which can differ from the rate you see quoted elsewhere. Legit.ng reported in August 2026 that UBA applies a daily-revised rate to naira card international transactions. Second, any fee for international use or ATM withdrawals, plus the US ATM owner's own fee. Check the bank's tariff, then compare the naira debited with the dollar amount on your receipt.

Worked example (illustrative)

You pay a $120 restaurant bill in Atlanta. If your bank converts at ₦1,560 per dollar, it debits ₦187,200. If the rate you could have got by converting in advance was ₦1,500, the same meal cost ₦7,200 more on the card, a 4% difference. Both rates here are examples, not quotes; the method is what to copy. Never assume the card rate matches the rate you saw that morning.

Practical points in the US

  • Enable international use. Many banks switch it off by default; turn it on in the app or by calling.
  • Online checkouts. US sites often ask for a billing ZIP code; a Nigerian card has none, so some checkouts decline it. Try paying as a guest or choose a site that accepts international cards.
  • Codes. Online payments may need an OTP sent to your Nigerian number; see OTPs not arriving in the US.
  • Pre-authorisations. Hotels, car hire and fuel pumps place holds that count against your limit.
  • Verve-only cards. Verve is Nigeria's domestic scheme; check with the bank before assuming one will work abroad. See card schemes in Nigeria.

Before you travel or rely on it

  1. Find your bank's latest notice on international limits for your exact card type.
  2. Turn on international, POS, online and ATM use in the app, as needed.
  3. Check that you can receive the codes the bank sends for online payments.
  4. Note the bank's international contact number in case the card is blocked.
  5. Make one small payment first and compare the naira debited with the receipt, so you know the rate the bank is applying.
  6. Keep a second way to pay, such as a US card, in case the limit is used up or the policy changes.

Track how much of the limit you have used. Quarterly and annual limits, like GTBank's and Zenith's as reported, run across all your international spending, so a holiday in March can leave little room for a bill in May.

Better options for regular US spending

For a short visit, a naira card with a decent limit can be a useful backup. If you live in the US, it is a poor main card: limits are capped, the rate is the bank's, and a policy change can switch it off overnight. A US debit card for daily spending, and a dollar card linked to a domiciliary account for spending from Nigerian savings, are steadier. Our guide to paying for things in the US with a Nigerian dollar card covers the second; if a dollar card is refused, see why Nigerian dollar cards are declined.

Where Pryme fits

Rather than converting naira at a card rate you only see afterwards, a Pryme account lets you hold naira and dollars side by side and convert with Swap when you choose; the rate is shown first and the fee is on its own line before you approve (Swap). Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Can I use my GTBank naira card in America?

GTBank told customers in August 2026 that its naira card international limit was $40,000 a quarter, as reported by Business Post. Check the current limit and enable international use in the app before you rely on it.

Which Nigerian naira cards do not work abroad?

Fidelity Bank says individual naira cards are not permitted for international transactions. Policies change, so check your own bank's current notice.

What exchange rate does a naira card use in the US?

The bank's own rate on the day the payment is settled, which may differ from rates quoted elsewhere. Compare the naira debited with the dollar amount on the receipt.

Can I withdraw dollars from a US ATM with a naira card?

Some banks allow it within a limit; FirstBank's naira Mastercard was reported at $1,000 a day at ATMs in September 2026. Expect the US ATM owner's fee as well.
