Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Paying for things in the US with a Nigerian dollar card

Whether Nigerian dollar and naira cards work at US shops, online and at ATMs, what limits banks publish, and the charges to expect.

The short answer

A Visa or Mastercard dollar card issued by a Nigerian bank and linked to a domiciliary account or loaded as a prepaid card generally works at US merchants, online and at ATMs, within the limits the issuing bank sets. Naira cards are more restricted: some banks have raised their international limits in 2026, while others, such as Fidelity, say individual naira cards cannot be used internationally at all.

Three kinds of Nigerian card

What happens at a US till depends on which card you hold:

CardSpends fromIn the US
Dollar debit cardA USD domiciliary accountSpends dollars directly, within the bank’s daily limits
Dollar prepaid cardA balance you load in advanceSpends the loaded dollars; limits per transaction, day and month
Naira debit cardYour naira accountConverted at the bank’s rate, within an international limit, if allowed at all

The network logo (Visa or Mastercard) gets the card accepted. Verve cards are a domestic scheme; FirstBank’s own FAQ notes that Verve works only on websites that accept Interswitch or Verve, so do not plan US spending on one.

Limits banks publish

Limits change often and differ by card tier, so treat these as what each source said on its date, then confirm in your bank’s app.

  • Stanbic IBTC (cards FAQ): USD debit card daily limits of $1,000 at ATMs, $3,500 online and $6,500 at POS. The same page puts its naira debit card international spend at $100 a month across POS, web and ATM, and says naira credit cards are not eligible for international use.
  • UBA (prepaid cards page): the Dollar Prepaid Card is for international use only, with per-transaction limits of $650 at ATMs, $3,000 at POS and $2,500 online, and a $10,000 monthly limit; issuance is $3.39 including VAT and annual maintenance $20 plus VAT.
  • Fidelity Bank (FAQs): “Individual Naira Cards are not permitted for international transactions across all channels as mandated by CBN”; its dollar card costs ₦1,075 to issue, charged to the naira account, and $10 a year to maintain.
  • Naira card limits raised in 2026: Nairametrics reported on 7 September 2026 that GTBank’s naira card limit had reached $40,000 a quarter, FirstBank’s naira Mastercard $10,000 a quarter for POS and web with $1,000 a day at ATMs, and Zenith’s up to $50,000 a year. These are press reports of bank notices, so confirm on your own account.

Banks’ published figures do not always agree with press reports, as Stanbic’s FAQ shows. The figure in your app is the one that applies to you.

What it costs

A dollar card spending dollars in the US avoids a currency conversion, which is its main advantage. You still meet:

  • card issuance and maintenance fees set by the Nigerian bank (examples above);
  • any fee a US ATM operator adds, which the machine should show before you continue;
  • on a naira card, the bank’s exchange rate for international transactions, which can differ from the rate you would get converting yourself.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

You buy a $1,200 laptop online. On a USD debit card the domiciliary account is debited $1,200. On a naira card at an example bank rate of ₦1,420 to $1, the naira account is debited ₦1,704,000. If you could have converted at ₦1,370 to $1 yourself, the same purchase would have cost ₦1,644,000 in naira, so the card rate cost you ₦60,000 more. Check: 1,200 × 50 = 60,000.

Practical points for US use

  • Funding the dollar account. A dollar card is only as useful as the dollars behind it. The CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, as summarised by Pavestones in June 2026, lets holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts make direct transfers up to $10,000 a day without Form A, which helps when you top up from the US.
  • Card checks. Some US merchants and online stores run address checks that a Nigerian billing address will fail. Keep a US card as a backup for those.
  • Freezes. Turn on transaction alerts and know how to freeze the card from the app; reaching a Nigerian call centre from the US costs time.
  • Long term. If you live in the US, a US debit card from a US bank will be cheaper for everyday spending and builds a local banking history. A Nigerian dollar card is most useful as a bridge in your first months, or for paying from dollars you already hold in Nigeria.

Before you travel or move

  1. Check which of your Nigerian cards are enabled for international use, in the bank’s app.
  2. Note the per-transaction, daily and monthly limits for each card.
  3. Make sure the phone number on the account can receive alerts and one-time codes in the US.
  4. Carry a second card from a different bank or network in case one is declined.

Where Pryme fits

If your aim is to spend dollars you hold and naira you hold without being pushed into a conversion at the till, a Pryme Personal Account keeps USD and NGN in separate balances with their own account details. You move money between them with Swap when you decide, seeing the rate and fee before you approve, and you can send dollars to your US account. Account security uses an authenticator app and a transaction PIN; see security.

Questions people ask

Can I use my GTBank naira card in America?

GTBank naira cards can be used internationally within the bank’s limit, reported at $40,000 a quarter in September 2026. Check the current limit in your GTBank app.

Does a Nigerian dollar card work at US ATMs?

Visa and Mastercard dollar cards generally do, within the issuer’s ATM limit; for example, Stanbic IBTC lists $1,000 a day on its USD debit card.

Why was my Nigerian card declined in the US?

Common reasons are a naira card not enabled for international use, a limit reached, an address check failure at the merchant, or no funds in the dollar account.

Is a Nigerian dollar card better than a US debit card?

For someone living in the US, a US debit card is usually cheaper day to day. A Nigerian dollar card helps when spending dollars you already hold in Nigeria.
