Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Reactivating a dormant Nigerian account from the US

An idle Nigerian account can go dormant in six months to a year while you live in the US. What banks ask for, what works remotely, and the cost.

The short answer

Contact the bank from your registered email, ask for its reactivation form, and send it with a valid ID and a recent proof of address; some banks, such as GTBank, have a non-resident route that accepts notarised documents by email. Reactivation should be free: the CBN Guide to Charges lists it as waived. Expect a liveness check against your BVN or NIN photo before the account works again.

Inactive, dormant and unclaimed are not the same

Banks use three stages, and the further along the account is, the more paperwork it takes.

StageWhat the bank saysWhat it usually takes
InactiveGTBank: no customer-initiated transaction for 6 monthsAny transaction you start, such as an app transfer
DormantGTBank: 1 year; Zenith and Fidelity: current accounts after 6 months (Zenith says savings accounts do not go dormant)Form, ID and proof of address
Unclaimed balanceInactive 10 years or more; money moves to a CBN-managed fundA reclaim claim through the bank, see reclaiming unclaimed balances

Definitions differ by bank and account type, so check yours. A dormant account still holds your money; it simply stops accepting debits until you prove it is you.

What banks ask for

The documents are similar across banks. GTBank's reactivation page is the most detailed public example: an individual's dormant account needs a reactivation form, a utility bill not more than three months old and a valid ID such as an international passport, driver's licence, voter's card or national ID. For non-resident customers it lists a signed form, a notarised utility bill or a stamped bank statement covering three months, and a valid Nigerian ID, or a notarised foreign ID with an expired Nigerian one, sent to its NRN account email. It says there is no charge.

Access Bank's account management form covers dormant reactivation with a reason, ID, utility bill and compliance form, and for diaspora customers accepts a passport with a visa or notarised permit. Fidelity links its online account portal for reactivation from its home page.

Can a US document be the proof of address?

Often yes, if the bank accepts foreign addresses for non-resident customers. A US utility bill or bank statement in your name, dated within three months, is the usual item; some banks want it notarised. See using a US utility bill as proof of address.

Steps from the US

  1. Find the bank's reactivation or NRN page and download its current form.
  2. Email customer service or your account officer from the address registered on the account; say the account is dormant and you live in the US.
  3. Prepare a clear scan of your passport data page (and Nigerian ID if you have one), and a recent US proof of address.
  4. Get documents notarised if the bank asks; a US notary or a remote online notary may be accepted, but confirm first, as rules vary.
  5. Send everything in one email, and keep the bank's acknowledgement.
  6. Complete any liveness check: a CBN circular effective 1 July 2026, as reported by Proshare, requires liveness checks against BVN or NIN for online reactivation.
  7. Once active, make a small transfer you start yourself to confirm debits work, and set a reminder to do so every few months.

What it should cost

Under the CBN Guide to Charges in force since 1 January 2020, reactivation of a dormant account is waived, meaning banks should not charge for it. Your own costs are notarisation, courier if the bank wants originals, and any keep-my-number plan to receive SMS codes. If a bank asks for a reactivation fee, ask which line of the CBN guide it relies on.

Worked example (illustrative)

Funmi in Dallas has ₦480,000 in a current account she has not touched for 14 months. She emails her bank, receives the form, gets her passport copy and a Texas electricity bill notarised for $10 a page at a local notary ($20 in total), and sends them. The bank reactivates the account four working days later, and she pays a small bill from the app to confirm. Her cost is $20 and an afternoon; the bank charged nothing.

Before you send anything

Two checks save a round of emails. First, make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, because most banks will only act on instructions from registered contact details; if they are out of date, updating them becomes step one. Second, check that the name on your passport matches the account exactly. A marriage, a dropped middle name or a different spelling turns a reactivation into a change-of-name request, which needs extra documents such as a marriage certificate or a sworn declaration.

If the bank insists on a branch visit

  • Ask whether a representative can submit the documents with your signed authority letter; some banks accept this, others want a power of attorney.
  • Ask whether a Nigerian mission or a bank's overseas office can verify your ID.
  • If you will be in Nigeria soon, book the branch visit early in the trip so any follow-up can happen before you fly back.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account is run from the app wherever you live, so day-to-day naira payments keep a single account active without branch visits (how it works). Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. For general rules on dormancy, see dormant accounts and unclaimed balances in Nigeria and our guide to keeping a Nigerian account active from the US.

Questions people ask

How long before a Nigerian bank account becomes dormant?

It depends on the bank and account type. GTBank says one year without a customer-initiated transaction; Zenith and Fidelity say current accounts go dormant after six months, and Zenith says its savings accounts do not.

Can I reactivate my Nigerian bank account online from abroad?

Often yes. Many banks accept a form and documents by email, and GTBank has a non-resident route. A liveness check against your BVN or NIN may be required.

Do Nigerian banks charge to reactivate a dormant account?

They should not. The CBN Guide to Charges lists reactivation of dormant accounts as waived. You may still pay for notarisation or courier.

What documents do I need to reactivate a dormant account from the US?

Usually the bank's form, a valid ID such as your passport, and recent proof of address, which some banks accept from the US if notarised.
