Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Using a US debit card at a Lagos ATM: fees to expect

Up to three charges can hit one naira withdrawal: your US bank's fees, the Nigerian ATM's, and the exchange rate. Plus the per-withdrawal caps in Lagos.

The short answer

A naira withdrawal in Lagos on a US debit card can carry up to three costs: your US bank's foreign ATM or foreign transaction fee, any charge the Nigerian ATM owner adds, and the exchange rate used to turn naira into dollars. Separately, Nigerian banks cap how much cash comes out: the US State Department says ₦20,000 or lower per withdrawal and ₦100,000 a day, as at June 2026. Small caps mean more withdrawals, so any flat per-withdrawal fee adds up quickly.

The three layers of cost

When you put a US debit card into an ATM in Lagos, three different parties can take a share. Knowing which is which lets you check each one before you travel rather than discover them on your statement.

LayerWho charges itWhere to find it
Out-of-network or international ATM feeYour US bankYour account's fee schedule
Foreign transaction fee (often a percentage)Your US bank or card networkYour account's fee schedule or card terms
ATM operator chargeThe Nigerian bank that owns the ATMThe ATM screen, before you confirm
Exchange rateThe card network or your bankYour statement; compare with a published rate

Banks differ widely. As two examples of what US providers' own pages say: Cash App's terms list a 3% foreign transaction fee on its card (updated September 2026), while Schwab Bank says it charges no foreign transaction fees on its Investor Checking debit card and rebates ATM fees worldwide, though it notes "the bank or network may also charge a fee". Read your own bank's schedule; do not assume.

Withdrawal limits in Nigeria

The US State Department's Nigeria page (last updated 25 June 2026) says banks cap ATM withdrawals at ₦20,000 or lower per transaction, with a daily cap of ₦100,000. Your US bank also has its own daily ATM limit in dollars. You get whichever is lower, so on a long trip you may be making many small withdrawals.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

Suppose your bank charges a flat $5 per foreign ATM withdrawal plus a 3% foreign transaction fee, and the ATM caps you at ₦20,000 a withdrawal. To take out ₦100,000 you need five withdrawals.

ItemPer withdrawalFive withdrawals
Flat foreign ATM fee$5.00$25.00
3% fee on a dollar value of, say, $13.00$0.39$1.95
Total bank fees$5.39$26.95

In this example the bank fees come to about $27 on cash worth roughly $65, before any ATM owner charge or rate margin. The dollar value used here is an illustration; check the rate on the day. The lesson is that flat per-withdrawal fees and small cash caps work badly together.

Three ways to keep costs down

  • Check your card before you fly. Look for the foreign transaction fee, the international ATM fee and whether any rebate applies.
  • Refuse conversion at the ATM if offered. If the screen offers to charge you in dollars at its own rate, declining usually lets your card network convert instead. Compare the two if both are shown.
  • Use cash less. Most payments in Lagos can be made by naira bank transfer. Cash is still needed in places, and the State Department warns hospitals often expect immediate cash payment, so keep some on hand.

Debit card or credit card at the ATM?

Use a debit card for cash. A credit card used at an ATM is a cash advance, which the CFPB says often carries its own fee and a higher APR than purchases, with interest usually charged from the day you withdraw rather than after a grace period (reviewed September 2026). On a series of small Nigerian withdrawals, that combination is expensive. Keep the credit card for purchases at merchants that accept it.

If your debit card is linked to a checking account with overdraft cover, be careful: several small withdrawals plus fees can take the balance below zero and trigger overdraft charges on top. Check the balance in the app before each withdrawal, or keep a separate travel balance in the account.

Checking your statement afterwards

Each withdrawal should appear in your US account as a dollar amount, sometimes with the foreign fee on a separate line. Compare the dollar amount with the naira you received and a published reference rate for that day to see the effective rate you paid. If a withdrawal shows on your statement but no cash came out, report it to your US bank quickly; the bank will raise it with the ATM owner through the card network.

Safety at the machine

Use ATMs inside bank branches or busy, well-lit premises during the day, shield your PIN, and turn on transaction alerts so any unexpected withdrawal shows at once. If a machine keeps your card, contact your US bank to lock it in the app and report it to the bank that owns the ATM. Telling your bank you are travelling is covered in our travel notice guide, and alternatives to ATMs in getting naira cash with a US account.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account holds US dollars and naira side by side, with Nigerian account details for the naira, so you can convert dollars to naira with Swap when you choose and pay people in Lagos by bank transfer instead of withdrawing cash through a US card. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. See multicurrency accounts and sending money.

Questions people ask

How much can I withdraw from an ATM in Nigeria with a foreign card?

The US State Department says Nigerian banks cap ATM withdrawals at ₦20,000 or lower per transaction and ₦100,000 a day (June 2026). Your own bank's daily limit also applies.

Do Nigerian ATMs charge foreign cards?

The ATM owner may add a charge; it should be shown on screen before you confirm. Your US bank's own fees are separate.

Which US debit card has no foreign ATM fees?

Some providers say so on their own pages, for example Schwab Bank for its Investor Checking card, but terms change. Check your card's current fee schedule.

Should I accept the ATM's offer to charge me in dollars?

Compare the rate shown with a published rate. Declining usually means your card network does the conversion instead.
