Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How UK-based Nigerians split savings between pounds and naira

A goal-by-goal way for UK-based Nigerians to decide how much to save in pounds and how much in naira, with a labelled example and the protection rules.

The short answer

Save in the currency of the bill you are saving for. Goals that will be paid in the UK (rent, emergencies, a deposit, retirement here) belong in pounds; goals paid in Nigeria (building, family support, school fees at home) can be held in naira, ideally close to when the money will be spent, because holding naira for years exposes it to currency falls.

Start from the bills, not the rate

Most UK-based Nigerians have two sets of future costs: life in the UK and obligations or plans at home. The cleanest way to split savings is to list each goal, note the currency it will be paid in and when, and save for it in that currency. A rough split such as "70/30" only makes sense once it is built up from real goals.

GoalPaid inTime frameUsually held in
Emergency fund for UK living costsPoundsAny timePounds
House deposit in the UKPoundsYearsPounds
Monthly support for parentsNairaMonthlyNaira, topped up monthly
Building a house in NigeriaNairaStaged over yearsPounds until each stage, then naira
Children's school fees in NigeriaNairaTermlyNaira for the next term or two
Moving back to NigeriaBothYearsMostly pounds, shifting to naira near the move

Why timing matters for naira goals

Holding naira for a goal years away means taking the risk that the naira buys less over that time. Naira savings products can pay interest, but whether that interest keeps pace with the currency is unknown in advance. For long, naira-priced goals many people keep the money in pounds and convert in stages as each payment approaches. For near-term naira goals, holding naira removes the risk that a currency move shrinks the amount just before a bill. Our guide to naira depreciation and UK savers covers this in more detail.

A labelled example

Example only. Ada saves £800 a month in London. Her goals:

  • UK emergency fund: target £6,000, has £3,000. She puts £300 a month in a UK savings account until it is full.
  • UK house deposit: £250 a month in pounds.
  • Support for her mother: ₦150,000 a month. At an example rate of ₦1,800 to £1 that is about £83 (₦150,000 ÷ 1,800 = £83.33), converted monthly.
  • Building in Enugu, next stage in 18 months: the remaining £167 a month saved in pounds, to be converted when the builder's invoice arrives.

Check: £300 + £250 + £83 + £167 = £800. So in this example about 10% of her monthly saving becomes naira straight away, and another 21% is earmarked for naira later. The split falls out of the goals.

Goals change. A building plan may slow down, or a parent's needs may grow. Because each pot is tied to a goal, you can move money between them deliberately rather than dipping into whichever account happens to have a balance.

Protection and tax on each side

In the UK, the FSCS protects deposits up to £120,000 per eligible person per bank, building society or credit union, and says it cannot protect e-money or payment services firms. In Nigeria, deposits at licensed banks are insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit; check the limit for the institution type you use.

If you are UK resident, GOV.UK says you normally pay UK tax on foreign income, which includes interest earned on savings in Nigeria, usually reported through Self Assessment. Our guide on a UK ISA versus naira savings compares the two. This is information, not tax advice.

Where to hold each part

The pounds part usually sits in a UK current account for spending and a UK savings account or ISA for goals, with the emergency fund kept in instant access. The naira part needs an account in Nigeria in your name; most banks require a BVN, and Nigerians abroad can obtain one through the diaspora route described in our Nigeria library's guide to the NRBVN. Keep the naira part in an account you can manage fully from the UK, without relying on a relative to sign or collect anything for you.

Common mistakes

  • Converting a large lump into naira years before it is needed, then watching it shrink in pound terms.
  • Keeping the UK emergency fund in naira, where it cannot pay a London bill quickly.
  • Letting a relative hold "your" naira savings in their own account, which leaves you with no legal claim if things go wrong.
  • Forgetting that naira interest may need to go on a UK tax return.

Review twice a year

  1. Update each goal's target and date.
  2. Move money from pounds to naira for any naira goal now within a few months.
  3. Check the protection limits and that no single account holds more than you are comfortable with.
  4. Keep records of conversions in case your bank or HMRC asks.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds GBP and NGN together, so each goal can sit in its own currency. Naira held in Nigeria can go into Savings Boxes: Flexible, Fixed, Investment or Interest-free, with rates shown in the app. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit; the Investment Box funds that bank's lending, so its return depends on that lending. You Swap between currencies when you choose. Open an account.

Questions people ask

How much of my savings should be in naira if I live in the UK?

Enough to cover goals that will be paid in naira soon. Long-term goals priced in naira are often held in pounds and converted in stages.

Is it safe to keep savings in naira while living abroad?

Deposits at licensed Nigerian banks are insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit, but holding naira long term carries currency risk.

Do I pay UK tax on interest from my Nigerian savings?

If you are UK resident, GOV.UK says foreign income such as savings interest is normally taxable in the UK, usually through Self Assessment.

Should I save for a house in Nigeria in pounds or naira?

Many people save in pounds and convert as each building stage is due, to avoid holding naira for years.
