Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

How naira depreciation affects Nigerians saving from the UK

The mechanics of naira depreciation for Nigerians saving from the UK, with a labelled multi-year example of what happens to savings in pounds.

The short answer

When the naira weakens, each naira you hold buys fewer pounds, so savings kept in naira shrink when you measure them in pounds even if the naira balance grows. Whether you lose or gain depends on two numbers: the return the naira earns and how far the exchange rate moves. If the rate rises by 20% in a year, your naira needs to earn 20% just to stand still in pound terms.

For a Nigerian living in the UK, savings have two measures. In Nigeria, what matters is what the money buys at home. In the UK, what matters is how many pounds it would turn into. Naira depreciation hits the second measure directly, and inflation hits the first. This guide explains both, with a worked example.

The basic arithmetic

The pound value of naira savings is the naira balance divided by the number of naira per pound. If the rate moves from ₦2,000 to ₦2,400 per pound, every ₦1,000,000 falls from £500 to £416.67. That is a 20% rise in the rate, but a 16.7% fall in the pound value, because the loss is measured against a bigger number of naira.

Pound value
Naira balance ÷ naira per pound
Break-even return
The naira return needed to keep the pound value flat equals the percentage rise in the rate
Real return in pounds
(1 + naira return) ÷ (1 + rise in rate) − 1

Worked example over three years

Example only. Every rate and return here is assumed, to show the mechanics, not a forecast. You save ₦5,000,000 when the rate is ₦2,000 per pound, so it is worth £2,500. It earns an assumed 15% a year in naira, and the rate rises an assumed 20% a year.

End ofNaira balanceAssumed rate (₦ per £)Value in pounds
Start₦5,000,0002,000£2,500.00
Year 1₦5,750,0002,400£2,395.83
Year 2₦6,612,5002,880£2,296.01
Year 3₦7,604,3753,456£2,200.34

The naira balance grows by just over half, yet the pound value falls by about 12%. Change one assumption and the picture changes: if the rate had stayed at ₦2,000, the same ₦7,604,375 would be worth £3,802.19. If the naira return had been 20% a year, matching the rate rise, the pound value would have stayed at £2,500.

Depreciation is not a straight line

Long-run charts can make depreciation look like a steady slide. Day to day it is not. Nairametrics, using CBN data, reported the official NFEM rate at ₦1,332.75 to the dollar on 7 October 2026, after trading between ₦1,330.50 and ₦1,332.99 that day. Rates can strengthen for months and then fall sharply. Movements in either direction are normal. That uneven path is why timing a single conversion is hard, and why the rate you actually get matters as much as the headline.

There is also more than one rate. Techeconomy reported on 14 October 2026 a gap of about ₦42.53 between the official NFEM rate and the parallel market quote it cited, and noted that quotes vary by location and dealer. When you convert, the relevant figure is the one your provider offers, not the headline. See how the official rate is set.

Inflation: the second measure

Even if you never convert, naira savings lose buying power at home when prices rise faster than the return. The NBS put headline inflation at 14.63% for September 2026, with food inflation at 19.59%, as reported by Voice of Nigeria. A naira account earning less than that is losing ground in Nigeria as well as in pound terms. Our Nigeria guide to real returns after inflation sets out the sums.

What UK-based savers do about it

  • Match savings to the spending. Money for future naira costs, such as a parent's care or a house at home, can stay in naira; money for UK life is safer in pounds.
  • Hold a deliberate split. A fixed share in each currency, reviewed on a schedule, avoids all-or-nothing bets. Our guide to splitting savings between pounds and naira walks through it.
  • Earn something on naira you keep. Idle naira suffers both inflation and depreciation; a return reduces the damage, though it rarely removes it.
  • Count the conversion cost. Each conversion carries a margin against the mid-market rate. Converting back and forth multiplies it.
  • Watch the tax side. For UK residents, currency movements can create a taxable gain or loss in some cases; see FX risk in naira investments.

What to check first

  1. Write down what each part of your savings is for, and in which currency it will be spent.
  2. Note the naira return you earn today, after any withholding tax.
  3. Compare it with recent inflation and recent rate movement, using dated sources.
  4. Decide your split before you need the money, not on the day.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds naira and pounds in one place, so you can keep a split without running two banks in two countries. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit, and naira you set aside can go into Savings Boxes, with rates shown in the app. Conversions through Swap show the rate and fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Why does my naira savings balance go up but its value in pounds go down?

Because the exchange rate has risen faster than your naira return. Pound value is the naira balance divided by the naira-per-pound rate.

How much interest do I need on naira to beat depreciation?

To keep the pound value flat, the naira return must match the percentage rise in the naira-per-pound rate over the same period.

Is it better to save in pounds than naira while in the UK?

It depends on where the money will be spent. Pounds suit UK costs; naira can suit future costs in Nigeria. Many people hold a fixed split.

What was Nigeria's inflation rate recently?

The NBS put headline inflation at 14.63% for September 2026, down from 15.39% in August, as reported by Voice of Nigeria.
