Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

UK bank account frozen after money from Nigeria: next steps

What to do when a UK bank freezes your account after a transfer from Nigeria: the review, your rights, the complaint route and the evidence that helps.

The short answer

Ask the bank, in writing, what it needs from you, send evidence that traces the money, and keep a record of every contact. If the freeze goes on, complain formally: for payment services the bank has 15 days to respond, and you then have six months from its final response to take the case to the Financial Ombudsman Service, free. Where a bank has reported to the National Crime Agency, it may be waiting out a seven-working-day notice period and a 31-day moratorium, and may be limited in what it can say.

A frozen account is more serious than a single payment on hold. Card payments fail, direct debits bounce, and the bank may not explain why. If it happened after money arrived from Nigeria, the transfer is the likely trigger, but the bank will treat it as a review of the account, not just the payment. This guide sets out what is happening, what you are entitled to, and a step-by-step plan. If only one payment is being questioned, start with why your UK bank asked about money from Nigeria.

What a freeze usually means

The Financial Ombudsman Service's guidance to firms describes accounts being suspended while the bank checks whether the account is 'being used for unlawful purposes', or blocked while it confirms a payment was authorised and the account was not compromised. Banks act under money laundering law and 'know your customer' rules. A freeze is the bank protecting its own legal position while it reviews; the outcome can be a full release, release with conditions, or a decision to close the account.

The legal clock you cannot see

If the bank has reported the money to the National Crime Agency and asked for a defence before releasing it, a statutory timetable runs. The Law Society's guidance says the NCA has seven working days from the day after the report. If it refuses, a moratorium of a further 31 calendar days follows, which can be extended by a court or, in some cases, automatically. During that time a firm may be unable to discuss the matter fully with you. Silence is frustrating, but it is not proof of a decision against you.

Your next steps

  1. Contact the bank and ask what it needs. Ask in writing (secure message or letter) whether it needs information from you and by when. Keep notes of every call: date, time, name, what was said.
  2. Send a complete evidence pack. Trace the money from its origin to the transfer: Nigerian bank statements, the SWIFT confirmation, sale or gift documents, invoices. Explain any currency conversion in one line.
  3. Ask about essential spending. In one case the Ombudsman describes, a bank let the customer withdraw cash and pay bills while restricting large transfers. Ask whether a similar arrangement is possible while the review runs.
  4. Make a formal complaint if it drags on. Say what happened, the harm it is causing and what you want. For payment services, the Ombudsman says a firm has 15 days to respond; for most other complaints, 8 weeks.
  5. Go to the Ombudsman if needed. If you are unhappy with the final response or the bank misses the deadline, refer the case within 6 months of the final response. The service is free; you do not need a claims firm.
  6. Make other arrangements. Move direct debits and salary to another account if you have one, so bills are not missed.

What the Ombudsman looks at

  • The bank's reasons and the evidence behind them.
  • Whether the restriction was proportionate to your circumstances.
  • How the bank communicated, and whether there was good reason if it did not tell you.
  • What help it offered to regain access.
  • Whether the block was likely to cause you financial harm.

The Ombudsman says blocks for fraud or criminal-activity checks are 'usually' considered reasonable, so a complaint is strongest on how the bank handled things: delay, poor communication, or a restriction out of proportion. It can tell the bank to put things right and to pay compensation for distress or inconvenience.

If the bank decides to close the account

Notice rules changed recently. Which? reported in May 2025 that new rules would require banks to give 90 days' notice, up from two months, with a clear written explanation, for contracts agreed from 28 April 2026, when the legislation was expected to come into force. Banks decide whether to apply this to older accounts. Bird & Bird's summary of the draft rules notes that reasons need not be given where the bank suspects financial crime, and Which? says there is no minimum notice where the bank thinks the account is being used for criminal purposes. Ask the bank in writing which rules apply to your account and how you will receive your remaining balance.

Preventing a repeat

  • Tell your bank before a large transfer from Nigeria arrives, and have the evidence ready.
  • Use an account whose purpose fits the payment; a business payment into a personal account invites questions.
  • Keep payment references clear and consistent.
  • See proof of source of funds and receiving dollars from Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

Clear records help in any review. From a Pryme account you can generate a verifiable receipt or statement, which anyone can check is genuine and unaltered. See receipts and statements, and contact us with questions about records.

Questions people ask

How long can a UK bank freeze my account?

No single limit is published. Where a bank has reported to the National Crime Agency, a seven-working-day notice period and a 31-day moratorium can apply, and a court can extend it.

Will the bank tell me why my account is frozen?

Not always. Where a report to the authorities is involved, a bank may be limited in what it can discuss.

How do I complain about a frozen account?

Complain to the bank in writing. For payment services it has 15 days to respond. Then you can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service within six months of its final response, free.

Can my bank close my account without notice?

Rules reported by Which? require 90 days' notice and reasons for contracts from 28 April 2026, but there is no minimum notice where the bank suspects criminal use.
