Ten years, one trunk

2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Paystack or Flutterwave payment failed: who refunds you

You were debited but the order failed. Why the merchant and your bank, not the gateway, hold the money, and how to get it back step by step.

The short answer

A payment gateway such as Paystack or Flutterwave processes the payment for the merchant; it does not hold your money for you. If you were debited for a failed payment, the refund comes either from your bank (if the payment never completed) or from the merchant (if it did). Paystack's refund documentation says the merchant initiates refunds, and that processed refunds can take up to 10 business days to reach you.

You paid online, saw "Secured by Paystack" or a Flutterwave checkout, got a debit alert, and the merchant says the payment failed. Many people then message the gateway on social media and wait. This guide explains who actually holds your money at each stage and who can return it. For evidence to keep, see settling a payment dispute: evidence to gather.

Who is who in an online payment

You and your bank
Your bank (the card issuer, or the bank you transferred from) debits your account.
The payment gateway
Paystack or Flutterwave connects the merchant to the card networks and banks, processes the payment and settles the money to the merchant.
The merchant
The business you are buying from. It is the gateway's customer, controls refunds, and receives the money once settled.

The gateway is the merchant's service provider, not yours. That is why Paystack's refund documentation is addressed to merchants: it is the merchant who starts a full or partial refund, and the refund cannot exceed the original amount.

Find out which of two situations you are in

Situation A: the payment did not complete

Your bank debited you, but the payment never reached the merchant (a timeout, a failed authorisation, a session that expired). The money is still with your bank or in transit, and the merchant has nothing to refund. Your bank should reverse it. For card payments online, the CBN's 2020 chargeback circular sets short windows: summaries report 48 or 72 hours for failed web transactions. See CBN refund timelines by channel.

Situation B: the payment completed but the order failed

The gateway recorded a successful payment and the money is on its way to (or already with) the merchant, but your order did not go through, or the merchant's system did not register it. Only the merchant can fix this, either by fulfilling the order or by issuing a refund through the gateway.

To tell which situation you are in, Paystack runs a lookup at paystack.com/lookup ("Why was I debited?") where you can search for a payment, and its help centre is at paystack.com/help. A result showing a successful payment to a named business points to situation B.

What Paystack says about refund timing

Paystack's refund documentation lists the stages a refund passes through: pending, processing, needs-attention (where the customer's bank details are needed and the merchant retries), failed (the amount returns to the merchant), and processed. It says that after a refund is processed it "may still take up to 10 business days" for the customer to receive the funds. If a merchant tells you it has refunded you, ask for the refund reference and date so you can count those days.

We did not open a Flutterwave customer help page for this guide, so we cannot quote its refund timings. The principle is the same: the merchant controls refunds of completed payments. Check Flutterwave's own site for its customer support route.

Paying by transfer at checkout

Many checkouts now offer "pay by transfer": you are shown an account number for a short time and asked to send an exact amount. Problems here look different. If you send the wrong amount, send after the window has closed, or send twice, the money has still left your bank successfully, so your bank will usually treat it as a completed transfer rather than a failed one. Contact the merchant first with the session ID, since the account you paid into belongs to its payment set-up. If that fails, the gateway's support can trace the transfer by its session ID.

Steps, in order

  1. Screenshot the debit alert, the checkout page and any error message. Note the time and amount.
  2. Use the gateway's lookup (for Paystack, paystack.com/lookup) to see whether the payment completed and to which business.
  3. If it did not complete: complain to your bank, ask for a reversal, and quote the CBN chargeback timelines.
  4. If it completed: contact the merchant with the payment reference and ask it to fulfil or refund. Ask for the refund reference.
  5. If the merchant does not respond, contact the gateway's support with the reference. A gateway can press its merchant, but the refund still comes through the merchant.
  6. If the merchant refuses and you paid by card, ask your bank to raise a chargeback; see how to raise a chargeback on a Nigerian debit card. For goods never delivered, the FCCPC is the consumer regulator.
  7. If your bank does not act within two weeks, escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department with your evidence.

Where Pryme fits

For businesses, Pryme offers bank-transfer checkout free of charge (checkout). Whichever checkout a seller uses, the same logic holds: once a payment completes, the seller is responsible for any refund.

Questions people ask

Paystack debited me but the transaction failed. Who will refund me?

If the payment did not complete, your bank should reverse it. If it completed but your order failed, the merchant must refund you through Paystack. Use paystack.com/lookup to see which applies.

How long does a Paystack refund take?

Paystack's documentation says that after a refund is processed it may take up to 10 business days for the customer to receive the funds.

Can Flutterwave refund my money directly?

A gateway processes payments for merchants. Refunds of completed payments are normally initiated by the merchant; contact the merchant first, then the gateway's support.

What if the merchant refuses to refund me?

If you paid by card, ask your bank to raise a chargeback. For goods or services not delivered, you can also complain to the FCCPC.
