Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Pig butchering scams: the long-con crypto investment

How an online friend steers you to a fake trading platform, why the profits on screen are invented and why withdrawals always need one more fee.

The short answer

Pig butchering is a slow investment fraud: a stranger builds a friendship or romance online for weeks, then introduces a 'trading platform' where your balance appears to grow. The profits are numbers on a screen the scammers control, and when you try to withdraw you are asked for a fee or 'tax' first; according to the FBI, victims never manage to cash out.

Where the name comes from

The phrase describes the victim being 'fattened up' before the slaughter. CBS News, reporting an FBI warning in September 2024, describes scammers spending weeks or months building trust through dating apps, social media or encrypted messaging, and pitching cryptocurrency investing as a route to financial success. The FBI said most of these operations are run by criminal organisations, typically based in Southeast Asia, but the scripts reach Nigerians through the same apps everyone uses, and local recruiters often carry them on.

The stages, in order

  1. The contact. A 'wrong number' message, a friendly comment on your post, a match on a dating app or a message in an investment group. The person is polite, successful and patient.
  2. The friendship. Daily chats, photos of travel and nice food, interest in your work and family. There is no request for money. This stage can last weeks.
  3. The reveal. They mention, almost in passing, that they trade crypto, gold or forex with an uncle, a mentor or 'insider signals'. They show screenshots of profits.
  4. The small start. They offer to teach you and send a link to a platform or app. You deposit a modest amount, often by buying crypto and sending it to an address the platform shows.
  5. The fake profits. The FBI says the platform shows apparent gains over time, which encourages larger deposits. Some victims are even allowed a small withdrawal to build confidence.
  6. The top-ups. A 'limited window', a 'VIP tier' or a margin call pushes you to add more, sometimes borrowed.
  7. The frozen withdrawal. When you ask for your money, the platform demands a fee, tax, 'release deposit' or 'anti-money laundering verification' first. Paying it leads to another demand.

How it differs from a quick Ponzi

Quick Ponzi or 'doubling' schemePig butchering
How you hear about itPublic promotion, WhatsApp groups, referral bonusesOne person, privately, after building a relationship
Time to collapseMonths, when new deposits slowEnds for each victim when they try to withdraw
Who the 'returns' come fromEarly investors are paid with later investors' moneyUsually nobody: the balance is invented on the screen
The hookHigh fixed returns and recruitmentTrust in a friend or partner, plus 'proof' screenshots
The final askNothing; the site just goes offlineWithdrawal fees and taxes, then 'recovery' offers

The two can overlap. CBEX, which collapsed in April 2025, was a public scheme, yet Nairametrics reported that it demanded $200 from users with balances over $1,000 (and $100 from others) to access their funds, the same 'pay to withdraw' trap. The SEC said CBEX was not a registered capital market operator. For the arithmetic of the public kind, see why 30% a month cannot be real.

Checks to run on the 'friend' and the platform

  • Reverse-search their photos. The FTC advises a reverse image search of profile pictures; stolen photos often appear under other names.
  • Ask for a live video call. Repeated excuses are a sign. (Be aware that video and voice can now be faked; see voice cloning scams.)
  • Check registration. Any firm offering investments to the Nigerian public should be registered with the SEC. See how to check SEC registration.
  • Search the platform's name with 'scam' or 'withdrawal'. Victims often post their experiences.
  • Notice who controls the money. If you send crypto to an address the platform gives you, you no longer control it, whatever the screen shows.
  • Talk to someone. The FBI's advice includes talking to someone you know before investing. Scammers often ask you to keep the opportunity secret.

If you are already in

  1. Stop sending money, including any 'fee' to release funds.
  2. Take screenshots of chats, the platform, wallet addresses and every transaction.
  3. If you paid through a bank or fintech, tell them at once; transfers between Nigerian accounts sometimes leave a trail that can be traced.
  4. Report to the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre e-reporting portal and to the EFCC; see how to report fraud.
  5. Ignore 'recovery agents'. The FBI warned that scammers set up fake crypto recovery services aimed at people who have already lost money, and the FTC says legitimate organisations never charge upfront to get your money back.

The law treats these schemes seriously. ICIR reported in April 2025 that under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, the SEC's director-general said Ponzi operators face ten years or more in prison and a minimum ₦20 million fine, with restitution to victims. This is information, not legal advice, and it does not mean money will be recovered quickly. For the platform stage in detail, read fake crypto platforms that demand a withdrawal tax.

Why kind, careful people fall for it

The scheme does not rely on greed at the start; it relies on loneliness, ambition and trust. By the time money is mentioned, the victim is talking to someone they consider a friend, and the first deposit is small and seems to grow. The fake withdrawal fee then turns sunk cost against you: paying one more fee feels better than admitting the balance never existed. Knowing the stages in advance is the most reliable defence, because each step can be named as it happens.

Questions people ask

What is pig butchering in crypto?

A long-con fraud where a scammer builds a relationship online, then persuades you to invest on a fake trading platform. The platform shows profits but demands fees before any withdrawal, and the money is never returned.

My trading platform is asking me to pay tax before withdrawal, is it a scam?

Almost certainly. The FBI describes withdrawal fees and taxes as the final stage of these scams, and says victims never manage to cash out. Do not pay.

Can I recover money lost to a crypto scam in Nigeria?

Sometimes, if money moved through Nigerian bank accounts that can be traced and frozen, so report quickly to your bank, the police cybercrime portal and the EFCC. Be wary of anyone who charges a fee to recover it.

How do I know if an online friend is a scammer?

Warning signs include refusing live video, steering talk to an investment, sending links to unknown platforms and urging secrecy or speed. Reverse-search their photos and ask someone you trust.
