Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Chargeback on a Nigerian debit card: how to request one

Paid by card and the goods never came, or the charge was wrong? How a chargeback works on Verve, Mastercard and Visa debit cards, and the time limits.

The short answer

A chargeback is a request through your card issuer to reverse a card payment, made after the merchant has failed to deliver or refund. In Nigeria you start it by writing to your bank with the transaction details and evidence; CBN rules from 2020 set 48-hour resolution for failed POS and web refunds, while card scheme cases take longer (Stanbic IBTC, for example, cites 45 working days for foreign disputes).

What a chargeback is, and what it is not

When you pay with a debit card, the money passes from your bank (the issuer) through a card scheme such as Verve, Mastercard or Visa to the merchant's bank (the acquirer). A chargeback is the process by which your issuer asks the acquirer to return the payment because something went wrong: goods not delivered, a duplicate charge, a wrong amount, or a transaction you did not authorise.

It is not a refund the merchant chooses to give, and it is not available for transfers. If you paid by bank transfer, there is no card scheme behind it and the routes are a recall, the merchant, the FCCPC and the courts.

Which situations qualify

ProblemUsually a chargeback case?Start with
Debited but transaction failed (POS or online)Yes, as a failed-transaction refundYour bank
Charged twice for one purchaseYesMerchant, then your bank
Paid online, goods never arrivedYes, after asking the merchantMerchant, then your bank
Card used without your knowledgeYes, as unauthorisedYour bank immediately, block the card
Goods arrived but you changed your mindUsually noMerchant's returns policy and FCCPA rights

Time limits

Two sets of timelines apply: how fast you must report, and how fast the system must respond.

Failed POS and web refunds
48 hours, under the CBN circular reducing chargeback periods (May 2020, effective June 2020)
POS merchant-cardholder disputes
48 hours, same circular
Web transaction complaints
Acknowledged immediately and resolved within 48 hours, same circular
Stanbic IBTC, example of a bank's terms
Unauthorised transactions to be reported in writing within 120 days; chargebacks take 3 working days domestic and 45 working days foreign from logging with the acquirer

Your own bank's card terms set its reporting window. Find them in the card terms and conditions on its website and report well inside the limit. If you are unsure, report the same week.

Steps

  1. Ask the merchant first where the problem is non-delivery or a wrong amount. Keep the request and any reply. Card schemes expect you to have tried.
  2. If the card was used without you, block it at once through your bank's app, USSD or phone line, then report.
  3. Write to your bank. Many banks have a chargeback or e-channel complaint form; FirstBank, for example, lists a Chargeback Form among its downloadable forms. Otherwise email customer care.
  4. Give the details: card's last four digits, date, amount, merchant name as it appears on your statement, the transaction reference, and what went wrong.
  5. Attach evidence (see below) and ask for a complaint number.
  6. Follow up and ask whether the bank has raised the dispute with the acquirer and on what date.
  7. Escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department if your bank does not acknowledge within 3 days or resolve within 2 weeks, per the CBN complaints guide.

Evidence your bank will want

  • Order confirmation, invoice or receipt showing what you paid for and the promised delivery date.
  • Your messages asking the merchant to deliver or refund, and their replies or silence.
  • Your statement line showing the debit (two lines for a double charge).
  • For a failed POS payment, the declined slip; for online, a screenshot of the error.
  • For unauthorised use, a note that you still had the card and when you blocked it.

Why chargebacks are refused

Knowing the common reasons helps you build the claim properly the first time:

  • Late reporting: the claim came in after the bank's or scheme's window.
  • Proof of delivery: the merchant shows a signed delivery or tracking record; reply with your own evidence if the item was wrong or damaged.
  • Authorised payment: for an "unauthorised" claim, the bank sees that the payment was approved with your PIN or a one-time code sent to your phone, which points to a scam rather than a card error.
  • No attempt with the merchant: you did not give the merchant a chance to fix it.
  • Change of mind: the goods arrived as described and you no longer want them.

Worked example

Example only. Ifeoma pays ₦38,500 by card to a foreign online shop for shoes promised within 14 days. After 30 days nothing has arrived and the shop does not reply to two emails. She writes to her bank with the order email, the two unanswered emails and her statement. The bank raises a dispute with the acquirer through the card scheme. Because the merchant is abroad, it falls under the longer foreign timeline. If the merchant cannot show delivery, the ₦38,500 is credited back; the naira amount may differ slightly if the payment was converted.

Where Pryme fits

If you pay foreign merchants often, holding USD, GBP or EUR and converting with Swap lets you see the rate before you pay. For related problems read double debit on a web payment, unauthorised online card payments and chargebacks from a business's side.

Questions people ask

Can I get a chargeback on a bank transfer?

No. Chargebacks are a card scheme process. For transfers, ask your bank to recall the payment and pursue the merchant through the FCCPC or the courts.

How long does a chargeback take in Nigeria?

Failed POS and web refunds are meant to be resolved within 48 hours under the CBN's 2020 circular. Disputes with a merchant take longer; one bank's terms cite 45 working days for foreign transactions.

Will the merchant know I asked for a chargeback?

Yes. The acquirer passes the dispute to the merchant, who can respond with evidence such as proof of delivery.

What if my bank refuses the chargeback?

Ask for the reason in writing. If you disagree and it has been 2 weeks, escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department with your evidence.
