Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Chargeback risk for POS agents: when a transaction is disputed

How a customer's dispute travels back to a POS agent, the CBN timelines that apply, the evidence that defends you, and your super-agent's role.

The short answer

When a customer disputes a POS withdrawal with their bank, the claim travels through the card scheme and switch to the bank or provider behind your terminal, and from there to you. CBN's 2020 circular set resolution windows reported as 48 to 72 hours for POS disputes. Your defence is a receipt for every transaction, the transaction reference, and the customer ID the 2025 agent banking guidelines say you should keep for some services.

A customer withdraws ₦50,000 at your stand, takes the cash and leaves. Days later your provider tells you the transaction has been disputed and the amount is being recovered from you. For a POS agent, a chargeback is more painful than for a shop, because you have already paid out cash. This guide explains how disputes reach you, what the rules say, and what evidence helps.

How a dispute travels to you

The customer does not complain to you. They complain to their own bank, the card issuer. The path then runs backwards along the transaction:

  1. The customer reports to their bank that a debit was unauthorised, failed, or debited twice.
  2. The issuing bank raises a dispute through the card scheme and switch.
  3. The dispute reaches the acquirer, the bank or licensed provider behind your terminal, which in agent banking is your Principal.
  4. Your Principal, or the super agent that manages your network, asks you for evidence.
  5. If the dispute is upheld against you, the amount is usually recovered from your agent wallet or account. Check your agent agreement for exactly how this works with your provider.

Under CBN's October 2025 agent banking guidelines, an agent works for one Principal and sits in one super-agent network at a time, and super agents are licensed to recruit and manage agents rather than offer agent banking directly (Techpoint Africa). So your first contact in a dispute is your super agent or Principal, not the customer's bank.

The timelines

CBN's circular on chargeback periods, effective 8 June 2020, shortened the windows. Summaries differ slightly: Mondaq reports POS disputes between merchant and cardholder to be resolved within 48 hours, while IT Edge News reported POS and web disputes within 72 hours. Either way, you will usually be asked for evidence quickly. The 2025 agent guidelines also expect complaints to be resolved within 7 working days.

Evidence that defends you

EvidenceWhy it helps
Terminal receipt and transaction referenceProves the transaction was approved and when; the 2025 guidelines require a receipt for every transaction
Customer signature or phone number on your copyLinks the person to the withdrawal
Copy of customer's government IDThe guidelines require it before instant transfers; taking it for large withdrawals helps too
Your transaction log or notebookShows the cash paid out, in sequence
CCTV footage, if you have itShows the customer at your stand. See CCTV as fraud evidence
Geo-tag dataSince the August 2025 directive, terminals are geo-tagged and alerts show the agent's name and location, which shows where the transaction happened

Common chargeback patterns

  • 'I did not make this withdrawal': the customer claims fraud after receiving the cash, sometimes with a stolen card.
  • Failed transaction, cash paid: the terminal showed declined or timed out, you paid anyway, and the customer's bank reverses the debit. Never pay cash until the terminal confirms approval.
  • Double debit: the customer really is debited twice; one of the debits is reversed. See when a card is declined but the customer says they were debited.
  • Fake transfer, not card: a customer pays by transfer for a cash-out and shows a fake alert. This is not a chargeback but a loss; see fake transfer cash-outs.

Reducing chargebacks before they happen

  • Pay cash only after the terminal prints approved; if it times out, check with your provider before paying.
  • Ask for the customer's phone number on every withdrawal and write it on your copy.
  • For large withdrawals, look at the card and ask the customer to keep it in view; a card that is not theirs is a common source of fraud claims.
  • Keep the terminal in your sight and do not lend it to anyone; disputes on a terminal someone else operated are hard to defend.
  • File receipts by day so that you can find one in minutes, not hours.

Steps when a dispute arrives

  1. Get the transaction reference, date, time and amount from your provider.
  2. Pull your receipt copy and log entry for that transaction.
  3. Send the evidence in writing through your provider's official channel, and keep a copy.
  4. Ask for the outcome in writing, and how the amount will be recovered or returned.
  5. If you think the process was unfair, escalate within your Principal; see complaints about agents and providers.

Worked example

Example: an agent pays out ₦50,000 for a card withdrawal and charges the customer a ₦500 service fee. A week later the cardholder's bank upholds a fraud claim. Without evidence, the agent loses the ₦50,000 cash and the ₦500 fee: ₦50,500. With a signed receipt, a copy of ID and CCTV, the agent can show the cardholder was present, which strengthens the case against the claim.

For the shop side of disputes, see chargebacks and reversals for businesses.

Questions people ask

Can a customer reverse a POS withdrawal after collecting cash?

They can dispute it with their bank. If the dispute is upheld, the amount is usually recovered from the agent, so keep evidence for every transaction.

How long does a POS chargeback take in Nigeria?

CBN's 2020 circular set short windows, reported as 48 to 72 hours for POS disputes. Agent guidelines expect complaints resolved within 7 working days.

What evidence should a POS agent keep?

A receipt for every transaction, the transaction reference, the customer's phone number or signature, ID for large or transfer transactions, and CCTV where possible.

Who handles a chargeback against a POS agent?

Your Principal, or the super agent managing your network, receives the dispute and asks you for evidence.
