Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Paying a sibling's master's fees abroad from the US

Supporting a sibling's master's in the UK, Canada or Germany from US income: proof-of-funds rules, paying the university directly, and US gift tax.

The short answer

Pay tuition straight to the university and plan the living-cost proof separately, because visa rules usually want funds in the student's own name. Canada asks study permit applicants outside Quebec to show CAD 23,448 for one person's living costs on applications from 1 September 2026, on top of tuition; Germany's blocked account is at least €11,904 for 2026. On US tax, the IRS excludes tuition paid directly to a qualifying educational organisation from gift tax; living costs you give count toward the $19,000 annual exclusion.

Two separate costs: tuition and proof of funds

When a sibling in Nigeria wins a place on a master's programme in another country, the family usually sees one big number. Visa rules see two: tuition, which goes to the university, and living costs, which the student must usually show they can cover, often with money held in their own account for a set period. Planning the two separately avoids the common mistake of sending everything to the university or everything to the student.

What the main destinations ask for

CountryLiving-cost proof (official figure)Notes
CanadaCAD 23,448 for one person, outside Quebec, applications on or after 1 Sep 2026 (CAD 22,895 before)Excludes tuition and travel; IRCC lists accepted proof, including bank statements and a GIC from a Canadian financial institution
GermanyBlocked account of at least €11,904 for 2026Alternatives include a scholarship or a declaration of commitment
United KingdomEnough money to support yourself and pay for the courseGOV.UK sets the amounts in its Student visa guidance; check the current figure for London or elsewhere
United StatesFunds for tuition, books, living and travel for the programmeSchools collect evidence before issuing Form I-20 (DHS Study in the States)

Figures are from each government's page as at October 2026 and change, sometimes every year. Always use the figure on the official page on the day your sibling applies.

Money in whose name?

Many visa systems accept a sponsor's support with documents, but some insist the money sits in the student's own account. Germany's blocked account is opened in the student's name. If you are sending money for proof of funds, send it early enough for the account to show it for the required period, and keep a short sponsor letter and your own bank statements ready.

Paying the university

  1. Use the payment route on the university's own fees page or offer letter. Many universities use an international payment portal; check the details on the university site, not in an email.
  2. Pay in the university's currency where you can, so the university receives the exact amount.
  3. Keep the receipt; it is usually needed for the visa application, and deposit receipts matter if a visa is refused and you ask for a refund.
  4. Check the university's deposit refund policy before paying a deposit.

A worked example

Your sister has a place on a one-year master's in Canada. Tuition (example) is CAD 30,000. IRCC's living-cost requirement for one person applying after 1 September 2026 is CAD 23,448. Total first-year funding to show: CAD 53,448. If you pay the CAD 30,000 tuition to the university and give CAD 15,000 towards living costs, and she has CAD 8,448 from savings and family in Nigeria, the proof is complete. The tuition figure is an example; the living-cost figure is IRCC's.

US gift tax

The IRS Form 709 instructions say tuition paid directly to a qualifying educational organisation is excluded from gift tax and does not need to be reported, but the exclusion covers tuition only: books, supplies, and room and board are not included. Check that the foreign university qualifies. Money you give your sibling for living costs is a gift counted against the annual exclusion, which is $19,000 per person for 2026. In the example, the CAD 15,000 for living costs would be compared with that $19,000 at the exchange rate when you send it. Above the exclusion, you would generally file Form 709, though tax is rarely due. This is information, not tax advice.

Timing the transfers

Work backwards from the visa timeline. Universities usually want a tuition deposit before issuing the document your sibling needs for the visa, so that payment comes first. Living funds then need to sit in the account for whatever period the destination requires before your sibling applies; Canada, for instance, asks for evidence such as recent bank statements, and Germany's blocked account must be opened and funded before the visa appointment. International transfers can take several working days, so leave a margin before every deadline rather than sending in the last week.

Agree the deal in the family

Is this a gift, a loan to be repaid after graduation, or a family investment that others will share? Write a short note so everyone, including other siblings, knows. If it is a loan, set out repayment in the currency your sibling will earn.

What to check first

  • Have you read the current proof-of-funds figure on the official page?
  • Do the living funds need to be in your sibling's own name, and for how long?
  • Are you paying tuition through the university's own published route?
  • Have you agreed, in writing, whether this is a gift or a loan?

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds US dollars, pounds and euros as well as naira, so you can convert with Swap into the currency a payment needs; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Keep a verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai for each payment for the visa file. For study in Nigeria, see paying a sibling's university fees at home; for a loan, putting a family loan in writing.

Questions people ask

How much proof of funds does a Nigerian student need for Canada?

IRCC asks for CAD 23,448 for one person's living costs outside Quebec on applications from 1 September 2026, plus tuition and travel.

Can I pay my sibling's tuition abroad from the US?

Yes. Pay through the university's own published payment route, in its currency where possible, and keep the receipt for the visa application.

Is paying my brother's tuition a taxable gift?

The IRS excludes tuition paid directly to a qualifying educational organisation from gift tax. Living costs you give him count toward the $19,000 annual exclusion for 2026.

What is the German blocked account amount for 2026?

Make it in Germany gives at least €11,904 for 2026, with alternatives such as a scholarship or a declaration of commitment.
