Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Paying for a wedding in Nigeria from the US: budget lines

The cost lines for a traditional and a white wedding in Nigeria, how to price them in naira, and how to pay vendors safely from the US.

The short answer

A Nigerian wedding paid from the US usually has two budgets, the traditional ceremony and the church or court wedding, each with venue, catering, drinks, decor, entertainment, photography and clothing lines. Price every line in naira with written quotes, pay vendors in stages to their business accounts, and hold back the final payment until delivery. Budget a buffer for price rises: headline inflation was 14.63% in September 2026 (NBS, via VON).

Two weddings, two budgets

Many Nigerian couples have a traditional engagement and a white wedding, sometimes weeks apart and in different cities. They have different hosts, different guest lists and different cost lines, so treat them as separate budgets even if the same planner handles both. Bride price and introduction costs are covered in our guide to introduction and bride price; this article covers the events themselves.

How to price the lines from the US

Vendors in Nigeria quote in naira, and naira prices can move between booking and the day. Inflation was 14.63% in September 2026 and food inflation 19.59%, according to NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria, which matters because catering is usually the biggest line. Practical steps:

  • Get at least two written quotes for every line above a level you set, say the top five lines.
  • Ask each vendor what is included (number of guests, hours, crew, fuel, transport) and what costs extra.
  • Ask whether the price is fixed once a deposit is paid, or can change with market prices.
  • Add a contingency line of 10 to 15% for the things that always come up.
  • Keep the budget in naira and convert dollars when payments fall due, rather than converting everything up front or at the last minute.

Worked example (illustrative budget)

A couple sets a naira budget of ₦20,000,000 for the white wedding. Catering and drinks 35% (₦7,000,000), venue and decor 20% (₦4,000,000), photography and video 10% (₦2,000,000), clothing and beauty 10% (₦2,000,000), entertainment 8% (₦1,600,000), logistics 5% (₦1,000,000), souvenirs and printing 2% (₦400,000), contingency 10% (₦2,000,000). The lines add to 100% and ₦20,000,000. These are example shares, not a recommendation.

Paying vendors safely

Paying from abroad means you often cannot see the vendor's work before paying. A few habits protect you.

  1. Sign a short written agreement with each major vendor: date, hours, what is delivered, total price, payment stages and what happens if either side cancels.
  2. Pay a deposit, then stage payments tied to milestones, with the final payment after the event or on delivery (for photographs, after you receive the files).
  3. Pay to an account in the vendor's business name. A sudden request to pay a different personal account is a warning sign; confirm by phone with someone you know.
  4. Ask a trusted person in Nigeria to visit the venue and meet key vendors.
  5. Keep every invoice and receipt in one place, with the payment reference.

Who pays for what

Before any vendor is booked, settle who is paying. In many families the bride's family hosts the traditional ceremony and the couple or the groom's side carries much of the white wedding, but this is a family matter and varies widely. Diaspora couples often end up paying more than tradition suggests because their families expect it. Agree in writing which lines each side covers, who signs vendor contracts, and who has the final word if costs run over. Money gifts sprayed or given on the day can help, but do not build the budget on them; you cannot know the amount in advance.

Planners and coordinators

A wedding planner in Nigeria can manage vendors while you are in the US, which is often worth the fee. Ask for references from recent couples, a written scope (which vendors they book, whether they handle payments), and how they are paid: a flat fee, a percentage of the budget, or commission from vendors. A planner who takes commission from vendors should say so. If the planner handles your money, ask for every vendor invoice, not a single total.

US rules when you send wedding money

  • When you send through a remittance provider, US rules require disclosure of fees, the exchange rate and the amount to be received, and generally give you 30 minutes to cancel (CFPB).
  • A 1% US remittance transfer tax applies from 1 January 2026 where you pay the provider in cash, by money order, cashier's check or similar (IRS, April 2026).
  • If you give more than the annual exclusion, $19,000 for 2026 per the IRS, to any one person, you may need to file a gift tax return. Paying vendors directly for your own wedding is your spending, not a gift; paying for a sibling's wedding may be a gift to them.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme holds dollars and naira in one account opened from the US. Keep the wedding fund in dollars, convert each vendor stage with Swap when it is due, and pay with Send. A verifiable receipt through VerifyDoc.ai gives both sides a record of each stage. For saving towards the day in naira, see how to save for a wedding in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

How much does a Nigerian wedding cost?

It depends on guest numbers, city and choices; there is no official figure. Build the budget line by line from written quotes, with catering usually the largest line.

Should I pay wedding vendors in Nigeria in full in advance?

Usually no. Pay a deposit and stage payments against milestones, with the final payment after delivery.

Is it better to convert all my dollars to naira early?

Holding the budget in naira terms and converting as each payment falls due avoids guessing the rate. Ask vendors if prices are fixed after deposit.

Do I pay tax on money sent for a wedding?

Paying for your own wedding is not a gift. Large gifts to another person above the annual exclusion may need a US gift tax return; cash-funded transfers attract the 1% remittance tax.
