Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Paying a Nigerian developer in stages: escrow and milestones

How to structure milestone payments to a Nigerian developer or builder, when escrow helps, what to hold back, and the evidence to ask for at each stage.

The short answer

Pay a Nigerian developer against verified milestones, not dates: a modest deposit on signing, stage payments only after an independent check of work done, and a retention held back until handover and title documents. Nigeria has no general statutory escrow for off-plan sales, so escrow must be agreed in the contract, usually with a bank, trustee or lawyer's client account.

Off-plan flats and builder contracts are where many Nigerians abroad put their largest naira sums. The common failure is paying too much too early, on the strength of renders and a WhatsApp update. Staged payment fixes most of that, if the stages are tied to things you can verify and someone other than the developer controls the money that has not yet been earned. This is general information; your lawyer should draft the contract.

What the law gives you, and what it does not

Lagos regulates people who deal in real estate through the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA). A 2022 analysis of the LASRERA Law by Famsville Solicitors notes that developers, facility managers and property managers must register and hold a permit, must keep a separate client account, and that the Authority keeps a register of dealers open to public inspection. The same analysis notes the law defines off-plan arrangements but does not set escrow rules for them. Outside Lagos, check whether the state has a similar body.

So escrow is a contract matter. If you want the developer paid only when milestones are met, the contract must say who holds the money, who confirms each milestone, and what happens if the developer stops.

Three ways to hold the money

OptionHow it worksWatch for
Bank or trustee escrowFunds sit with a bank or trust company and are released on a signed milestone certificateFees, release conditions, who signs
Lawyer's client accountYour lawyer holds funds and pays on certified stagesLawyer must act for you alone; check enrolment first
Pay-as-you-go, no escrowYou hold the money and pay each stage yourself after inspectionSimplest; relies on your own discipline and independent reports

Under the Rules of Professional Conduct 2007, rule 23, a lawyer must account promptly for client money and must not mix it with their own. Before any lawyer holds funds, check the lawyer is real.

A sample milestone schedule

Example only, for a ₦60,000,000 off-plan flat. Percentages are illustrative, not a market standard.

StageEvidence before releaseShareAmount (₦)
Contract signedTitle of the estate land checked; developer's registration confirmed10%6,000,000
Foundation and substructureIndependent site report with photos and measurements15%9,000,000
Frame and roofIndependent site report25%15,000,000
Windows, services, plasterIndependent site report25%15,000,000
Practical completion and keysSnag list cleared; occupation certificate where applicable15%9,000,000
RetentionTitle documents delivered (deed, consent filed); defects period ends10%6,000,000

Check: 10 + 15 + 25 + 25 + 15 + 10 = 100%, and the amounts add to ₦60,000,000.

What to hold back

  • Retention for title. The last tranche should depend on the deed of assignment and the consent or sub-lease process starting, not just keys. See title handover on a completed estate flat.
  • Retention for defects. A defects period (for example six or twelve months) during which the developer fixes faults.
  • Variations. Price changes only by written variation signed by you, never by message.

Who confirms a milestone

A milestone is only as good as the person certifying it. Use a quantity surveyor or engineer you appoint, not the developer's site manager. Their report should show dated photos, measurements and a statement of work done against the drawings. Release money only when that report is in your inbox, never on the developer's say-so that a stage is "almost done". Read site reports when building from abroad.

Contract clauses to insist on

  1. Exact unit, floor plan and specification attached.
  2. Payment schedule tied to certified milestones, not dates.
  3. Long-stop completion date, with a refund or compensation right if missed.
  4. Who holds unearned money and on what release instruction.
  5. Title route: what document you get, when, and who pays consent and registration.
  6. Dispute clause naming mediation or arbitration and the governing law.

Checks on the developer before the first payment

  • CAC records for the company, and in Lagos its entry on the LASRERA register.
  • A registry search on the estate land: who holds the title, and whether the developer has a right to build and sell.
  • Building plan approval for the block you are buying into.
  • Completed earlier projects you or someone you trust can visit, and buyers you can speak to.

If a developer has already missed handover, see when an off-plan developer misses handover.

Where Pryme fits

Stage payments are easier to manage when you pay each one yourself after the report arrives. A Pryme Personal Account holds naira and your other currencies, and verifiable statements give you a record you can show if a dispute arises.

Questions people ask

Is there escrow for off-plan property in Nigeria?

There is no general statutory escrow for off-plan sales. Lagos regulates developers through LASRERA, but escrow has to be agreed in your contract with a bank, trustee or lawyer's client account.

How much deposit should I pay a Nigerian developer?

There is no legal standard. Keep the deposit modest, tie later payments to independently certified stages, and hold back a retention until title documents are delivered.

Who should certify construction milestones?

A quantity surveyor or engineer you appoint yourself, with dated photos and measurements against the drawings.

Does a Lagos developer need to be registered?

Under the LASRERA Law, developers and other real estate dealers in Lagos must register and hold a permit; the register is open to public inspection.
