Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to check a Nigerian lawyer is real before you pay

How to confirm a Nigerian lawyer is enrolled on the Supreme Court roll and known to the NBA, before you send money for land or legal work.

The short answer

A person may practise law in Nigeria only if their name is on the roll of legal practitioners kept by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court. Before you pay, get the lawyer's full name as enrolled and year of call, check the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) member search and their branch, ask for proof of this year's practising fee, and call back on a number you found independently.

Most diaspora land and property fraud needs a "lawyer" somewhere in the story: someone who drafts the deed, "does the search" and holds the purchase money. If that person is not a lawyer at all, or is a real lawyer being impersonated on WhatsApp, every later check is worthless. The good news is that being a Nigerian lawyer is a matter of public record. This article shows what the record is, how to check it from abroad, and what the checks cannot prove. It is general information, not legal advice.

What makes someone a Nigerian lawyer

Under the Legal Practitioners Act, a person is entitled to practise as a barrister and solicitor if their name is on the roll. Section 7(1) provides for enrolment after the Body of Benchers calls the person to the Bar and they produce the certificate of call to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court. A 2012 Lagos High Court judgment (Kehinde v NBA), reported by Global Legal Post, relied on exactly these sections and confirmed that the roll, kept by the Chief Registrar, is the statutory record.

Two further layers sit on top of enrolment:

  • NBA membership and practising fee. The NBA's notice of 2 January 2026 says the 2026 Bar Practising Fee had to be paid online on or before 31 March 2026 for a lawyer to be "financially compliant", and that non-payment "may restrict your right to practice law". Compliant members are entitled to the NBA stamp and seal and a Letter of Good Standing.
  • Stamp and seal. The Rules of Professional Conduct 2007, rule 10(1), bar a lawyer from signing or filing legal documents without a seal and stamp approved by the NBA. A 2020 Canadian government research response notes stamps have been required since 1 April 2015, green for private practice and red for public practice.
  • Branch registration. Rule 13 of the 2007 Rules required private practitioners to notify their local NBA branch within 30 days of starting practice, including their office address. The current Rules of Professional Conduct 2023 commenced on 1 January 2024.

How to check from abroad

  1. Ask for the lawyer's full name exactly as enrolled, year of call and enrolment number. The same 2020 research response quotes a Senior Advocate: "All Nigerian lawyers have enrollment numbers."
  2. Search the NBA's Find a Lawyer directory on the NBA website (reported in 2020 at nigerianbar.org.ng/find-lawyer). A match shows the name exists; it does not prove the person messaging you is that lawyer.
  3. Ask for evidence of the current year's practising fee payment and a recent document bearing their NBA stamp and seal.
  4. Find the NBA branch for the city where they say they practise and contact it on a number from the branch's own website or the NBA, not from the lawyer.
  5. For a large transaction, ask a second lawyer you already know, or a family member in Nigeria, to request a formal search of the roll at the Supreme Court registry. The 2020 response warned there was "no reliable link" to the roll online, but that a formal search can be requested.
  6. Hold a video call with the lawyer at their office. Compare the face with any public profile, and the office with the address the branch has.

What the checks do not prove

A real enrolment number tells you the person was called to the Bar. It does not tell you the lawyer is competent in land matters, has no conflict of interest, or is the person on the other end of the chat. The commonest frauds are impersonation (a real lawyer's name, a fake email address) and conflict (the "lawyer" is the seller's cousin). The 2020 research response also found no published way to check that a particular stamp is genuine. So add these checks:

  • The lawyer acts for you alone, not also for the seller or developer, and says so in a signed engagement letter.
  • The engagement letter sets out scope, fee and what happens to any client money.
  • Client money goes to an account in the firm's name, never a personal account. The 2007 Rules (rule 23) require a lawyer to account promptly for client money and not mix it with their own funds.
  • Emails come from the firm's domain, and payment details are confirmed by voice on a number you found yourself.

Worked example

Example only: Ifeoma, in Toronto, is about to send ₦18,000,000 for a plot in Lekki through "Barr. K. Adeyemi". She asks for the enrolment details and gets a name, year of call and number. The NBA directory shows a K. Adeyemi in Lagos. She rings the Ikeja branch on a number from its own website, and the branch confirms an Adeyemi at a different office address. When she calls that office, the real lawyer has never heard of her plot. Total cost of checking: two calls and a day's delay. She sends nothing.

For the property side once the lawyer checks out, read what a property lawyer should do for you from abroad and title checks in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

What to check first

Roll
Name, year of call and enrolment number; formal search at the Supreme Court registry for big sums
NBA
Directory match, current practising fee, branch confirmation of office address
Independence
Signed engagement letter saying the lawyer acts only for you
Money
Firm account in the firm's name; payee details confirmed by voice

Where Pryme fits

Legal fees and stamp duties are paid in naira. With a Pryme Personal Account you can hold naira and pay the firm's account directly, using Swap only when you choose to convert, and keep a verifiable receipt for each payment. Read how account security works before you approve large transfers.

Questions people ask

How do I know if a Nigerian lawyer is real?

Get the full name as enrolled, year of call and enrolment number, check the NBA member directory and the local NBA branch, and for large sums request a formal search of the roll at the Supreme Court registry.

Can I check the Supreme Court roll online?

A 2020 research report found no reliable online link to the roll, though a formal search can be requested at the registry. Check the Supreme Court and NBA websites for any current online search.

Is an NBA stamp proof that a lawyer is genuine?

Not on its own. Lawyers must use an NBA-approved stamp and seal, but no published method lets the public confirm a stamp is authentic. Combine it with roll and branch checks.

Should the lawyer hold my land purchase money?

Only in a client account in the firm's name, under a signed engagement letter. Never pay a personal account, and confirm details by phone on a number you found yourself.
