An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.
Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.
Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.
Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.
Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.
Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.
Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.
Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.
Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.
Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

A naira-for-naira comparison of a bank overdraft and a loan app in Nigeria, with a worked example, the hidden fees on each, and when each one makes sense.
Part of the guideCredit without a loan form: loan apps, BNPL and Spaces
For the same sum over the same days, a bank overdraft almost always costs less than a loan app, because it charges an annual rate only on the balance you use, while loan apps usually charge a fixed fee for a short term. On ₦60,000 for 20 days, an overdraft at 33% a year costs about ₦1,085 in interest, against several thousand naira for a typical short app loan. The catch is access: overdrafts need a bank relationship and approval, and they are easy to leave open for too long.
Both products answer the same need: money for a short gap before income arrives. They price it in very different ways, which is why they are hard to compare at a glance. This article puts them side by side in naira. For the wider set of options, including salary advances, BNPL and Spaces credit, see our guide to everyday credit in Nigeria.
An overdraft lets your current account go below zero up to an agreed limit. You apply to your bank, which looks at your income, usually your salary paid into that bank, and agrees a limit. Interest is charged on the overdrawn balance each day, at an annual rate, and the facility is typically reviewed or renewed each year. As income arrives, it clears the overdrawn balance first.
A loan app pays a fixed sum into your account, often within minutes, and you repay it in one amount or in instalments over a short term, commonly 7 to 30 days. The price is usually a fee for the term, sometimes deducted upfront. Digital lenders must be registered with the FCCPC or hold a waiver as CBN-licensed institutions.
The rates below are illustrations, chosen to be in line with what is publicly reported, not quotes. Banks' average maximum lending rate was 33.16% a year in June 2026, and the CBN reset its policy rate to 23% in September 2026.
| Overdraft | Loan app | |
|---|---|---|
| Price as quoted | 33% a year on the daily balance | 15% fee for the term |
| Cost for 20 days | ₦60,000 × 33% × 20 ÷ 365 = about ₦1,085 | ₦60,000 × 15% = ₦9,000 |
| Simple annual rate | 33% | about 274% |
| Cost if repaid after 10 days | about ₦542 | ₦9,000 (flat fee) |
| Speed | Days to set up; then instant | Minutes |
| Paperwork | Application to your bank | App sign-up, BVN |
On these figures the loan app costs over eight times as much for 20 days, and the gap widens if you repay early, because the overdraft's cost falls with the days used while the app's fee does not. A loan app quoting a lower fee, say 5% for 30 days, narrows the gap but still costs about 61% a year. Our explainer on APR versus flat fees shows how to run this for any offer.
Neither product is just its headline rate. Before comparing, check the extras:
The CBN's April 2026 exposure draft of its revised Guide to Charges proposes that banks and other financial institutions communicate interest and lending rates on an APR basis, which should make this comparison easier once final. Until then, ask your bank for the annual rate, the fees and how interest is charged, in writing.
Ask the loan app the matching questions: total naira repaid, amount actually paid to you, late fees and rollover terms.
Overdrafts are cheap per day, which makes them easy to leave running. If your account sits overdrawn most of the month, every month, you are paying interest continuously on what has become a permanent loan. At 33% a year, an account that averages ₦60,000 overdrawn for the whole year costs about ₦19,800 in interest. That is cheaper than repeated app loans, but it is not small, and it shrinks the room you have for a real emergency.
A good test: does your account return to a positive balance at least once a month, soon after income lands? If yes, the overdraft is doing its job. If not, treat the overdrawn amount as debt and plan to pay it down, starting with a small fixed sum each payday.
| Situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short dips before salary, a few times a year | Overdraft | Cheapest per day; no new application each time |
| You do not have a bank overdraft and need money within the hour | A registered loan app or salary advance, for the smallest sum possible | Speed; but compare naira cost first |
| The gap recurs every month | Neither, first; build a buffer | Both become expensive as a habit |
| A larger cost repaid over months | Bank personal loan | Lower rate over a longer term |
| A purchase at a specific shop | BNPL or a merchant credit limit | Credit tied to the purchase, sometimes interest-free |
Before using any loan app, confirm it is on the FCCPC's approved list; our guide to checking a loan app's registration shows how. If your gap is always the days before payday, a salary advance may be cheaper than either.
For an overdraft, use a bank that offers one; the five questions above explain what to look for. In Nigeria, Pryme offers Spaces credit, a spending limit lent by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, a CBN-licensed microfinance bank, that can be spent only with merchants in Pryme's Spaces ecosystem, and Salary Advance, which lets you draw pay already earned for a flat fee, repaid on payday. A Spaces limit is offered based on how you run your account, and you accept the full agreement before anything is drawn. Before you use either, apply the test in this article: find the naira cost for the days you expect to hold the money, shown in the app before you commit, and check whether repaying early changes it. Solid Allianze, the lender, is integrated with all of Nigeria's licensed credit bureaus, and its credit decisions draw on them. As a CBN-licensed lender, Solid Allianze's credit activity sits within Nigeria's credit-reporting system, so repaying on time helps build a credit history.
How Spaces and Salary Advance compare with the rest of the market is covered in our Spaces credit guide.
Usually, for the same amount and days. An overdraft charges an annual rate only on what you use, while a loan app usually charges a fixed fee for a short term, which works out at a much higher annual rate.
Apply to the bank where your salary or business income is paid. The bank will look at your income and history before agreeing a limit, and may charge a fee to set it up or renew it.
It varies by bank and customer. As a benchmark, banks' average maximum lending rate was 33.16% a year in June 2026. Ask your bank for the annual rate and fees in writing.
It is rarely a good idea, because the loan app is usually much dearer per day. If the overdraft never clears, plan to pay it down from income instead.
Loan apps lend small sums for short terms without much information about you, and price that risk into a fixed fee. Spread over a year, a 15% fee for 20 days works out at about 274%.
