Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Borrowing for medical bills and emergencies: the safer options

The safer ways to cover a medical bill or emergency in Nigeria, in the order to try them, with a worked ₦250,000 example and the borrowing traps to avoid.

Part of the guideCredit without a loan form: loan apps, BNPL and Spaces

The short answer

When an emergency hits, use the cheapest money first: your own savings, then insurance or an HMO, then a payment plan agreed with the hospital, then family or a cooperative. If you still need to borrow, a salary advance, an overdraft or a credit limit you already have will usually cost less than a new loan app. If you must use an app, choose one registered with the FCCPC, borrow only the gap, and never let it access your contacts.

Emergencies are the moment people make their most expensive borrowing decisions, because there is no time to compare. Most Nigerians face them uninsured: patients paid about 71% of total health spending out of pocket, the health minister said in February 2026, and only around 20 million people were enrolled in health insurance. Medical bills were among the leading reasons people borrowed in EFInA's 2026 survey. This article sets out an order to work through, so the decision is made before the emergency. For the full range of credit products, see our guide to everyday credit in Nigeria.

The order to try, cheapest first

  1. Your emergency savings. No cost, no approval, no delay.
  2. Insurance or HMO cover. If you, your employer or your state scheme has enrolled you, call the HMO before paying. Ask what is covered and whether the hospital is in its network.
  3. A payment plan with the hospital. Many private hospitals will accept a deposit and the balance over weeks, especially for planned treatment after the emergency is stabilised.
  4. Family, friends or a cooperative. Often cheapest in money, but agree terms clearly to protect the relationship.
  5. Credit you already have. A salary advance, an overdraft or a credit limit already on your account. Usually cheaper and faster than a new lender.
  6. A registered loan app. Last, for the smallest sum, after checking registration and cost.

A worked example: a ₦250,000 hospital bill

Tolu's father is admitted and the hospital asks for ₦250,000. Tolu has ₦70,000 in savings. His net salary is ₦300,000, due in 12 days. The figures for each credit option are illustrations.

StepAmountCost
Savings₦70,000₦0
Hospital agrees: deposit now, balance in 30 daysDefers ₦80,000₦0
Brother contributes₦30,000₦0
Salary advance at a 3% flat fee₦70,000₦2,100
Total covered₦250,000₦2,100

Had Tolu borrowed the whole ₦180,000 he lacked from a loan app charging 15% for 30 days, the cost would have been ₦27,000, about thirteen times as much, and he would face a ₦207,000 repayment in a month on a ₦300,000 salary. Working down the list cost him ₦2,100 and left the ₦80,000 balance to be met from his next salary. It also took about an hour of phone calls, which is the real price of the cheaper route, and the reason to know the order before the call comes. Our article on salary advances explains how the advance part works.

Questions for the hospital's billing desk

  • Can you give me an itemised estimate, separating what is needed today from what can wait?
  • What deposit do you need to start or continue treatment, and can the balance be spread?
  • Do you accept my HMO, and can you contact them directly?
  • Can drugs be bought from an outside pharmacy if that is cheaper?
  • Who in management can approve a payment plan, and can I have it in writing?

An itemised estimate matters more than it seems. It shows what must be paid now and what can be planned for, and it gives relatives and donors something specific to contribute towards rather than a single large number.

If you have to use a loan app

Sometimes nothing else is available in time. If so, reduce the damage:

  • Check registration first. It takes minutes on the FCCPC website; our guide to checking a loan app shows how.
  • Borrow the gap, not the limit. If the app offers ₦200,000 and you need ₦60,000, take ₦60,000.
  • Read the naira total before accepting. Under the FCCPC's 2025 regulations, costs and fees must be disclosed before the transaction is completed.
  • Refuse contacts, photos and call log permissions. Registered lenders have declared they will not need them.
  • Pick a term that matches your income. A 7-day loan when your salary is 20 days away guarantees a rollover fee.
  • Use one lender. Borrowing from a second app to repay the first is the usual start of a debt spiral.

Traps that make an emergency worse

  • Money that arrives without being requested. Under the 2025 rules, credit must be opt-in and automatic or pre-authorised lending is prohibited. Do not spend unrequested credit; contact the provider and report it if needed.
  • "Agents" offering to arrange a loan for a fee. Legitimate lenders do not ask you to pay before lending.
  • Pledging your phone, documents or ATM card to an informal lender.
  • Crowdfunding through a stranger's account. Collect donations into an account in the patient's or family's name, and share the hospital's bill so donors can verify it.
  • Signing an agreement on behalf of someone else without reading it. If you guarantee a loan, you may owe it.

Preparing for the next one

The best emergency borrowing is the borrowing you do not need. Three steps, started this month, change the next emergency:

  1. Start an emergency fund, however small. ₦10,000 a month becomes ₦120,000 in a year, roughly half of Tolu's bill.
  2. Check your health cover. Ask your employer whether you are enrolled with an HMO, and find out how your state's scheme works.
  3. Know your credit in advance. Find out what your bank or account provider would offer before you need it, and check your credit record so there are no surprises. Our article on credit bureaus explains how.

Where Pryme fits

Two Nigeria-only Pryme tools fit the steps above. A Flexible Savings Box keeps an emergency fund apart from everyday money; its terms and rate are shown in the app, and rates can change. Spaces credit is a spending limit lent by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, a CBN-licensed microfinance bank, that can be spent only with merchants in Pryme's Spaces ecosystem, and Salary Advance lets you draw pay already earned for a flat fee, repaid on payday. A Spaces limit is offered based on how you run your account, and you see and accept the full agreement before anything is drawn. For both, the amount available and the cost are shown in the app before you commit.

Knowing your limit before an emergency is part of the plan, and so is checking that the pharmacy, clinic or shop you need is a Spaces merchant. Solid Allianze, the lender, is integrated with all of Nigeria's licensed credit bureaus, and its credit decisions draw on them. As a CBN-licensed lender, Solid Allianze's credit activity sits within Nigeria's credit-reporting system, so repaying on time helps build a credit history. The Spaces credit guide explains how behaviour-based limits work in general and what to check in any credit agreement.

Questions people ask

How can I pay a hospital bill with no money in Nigeria?

Ask for stabilisation first, then a payment plan with the hospital. Check whether you are covered by an HMO or state scheme, ask family or a cooperative, and use credit you already have before turning to a new loan app.

Can a hospital in Nigeria refuse emergency treatment for lack of payment?

For gunshot victims, the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshots Act 2017 requires treatment with or without a police report. For other emergencies, ask for stabilisation first and discuss payment afterwards, and involve the hospital's management if care is delayed.

What is the safest loan for a medical emergency?

Credit you already have, such as a salary advance or an overdraft, is usually cheaper and faster than a new loan app. If you use an app, choose one registered with the FCCPC and borrow only the gap.

Is it better to borrow from family or a loan app for an emergency?

Family is usually far cheaper in money, but agree the amount and repayment date clearly. A loan app is faster when no one can help, but check its registration and the naira cost before accepting.

How much should I keep in an emergency fund in Nigeria?

Start with any regular amount, even ₦10,000 a month, and build toward one month of essential spending, then three. Keep it separate from everyday money so it is there when needed.
