Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Opening a Nigerian naira account while living in Canada

How Nigerians in Canada open a naira account remotely: BVN or NRBVN first, then the ID, address proof and certification that banks list.

The short answer

Start with your BVN. If you already have one, many Nigerian banks will open a diaspora naira account from abroad with your ID, a recent foreign proof of address and references. If you have never had a BVN, the Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) is applied for online at nrbvn.com; NIBSS says it is issued within 72 hours of approval, and you can then pick a bank to open with.

A naira account at home is useful long after you move: rent from a flat, school fees for a sibling, money for your parents, a contribution to a family project. The hard part is not the account itself but the identity link that Nigerian banking runs on, the Bank Verification Number.

Step one: your BVN situation

There are three common cases:

  • You have a BVN from before you left. Use it. Banks link new accounts to your existing BVN, so make sure the phone number and name on it are current; our guide on changing your BVN phone number from Canada covers that.
  • You never had a BVN. This is the NRBVN case. NIBSS says you apply at nrbvn.com with a valid ID, proof of residency, a work ID or employment letter, a reference letter from a financial institution where applicable and, optionally, proof of income. Fees are shown on the platform, and the NRBVN is issued within 72 hours of approval.
  • You were born abroad to a Nigerian parent. GTBank's NRBVN page says the scheme is for non-resident Nigerians, including Nigerians by descent.

On cost, a CBN statement reported by Arise News in July 2025 said BVN enrolment remains free in Nigeria and that the $50 charged for NRBVN is a recoverable processing cost for remote verification. Check the amount shown on the platform when you apply. Our sister library's NRBVN explainer covers the scheme in full.

Step two: what banks ask for

Requirements differ by bank. Two published lists, read in October 2026:

BankID acceptedProof of addressOther
GTBank (NRN services)NIN or vNIN, Nigerian passport, national ID, voter's card, driver's licence, or a notarised foreign passport or licenceStamped overseas bank reference or banker's confirmation, or a notarised utility bill or stamped statement within 3 monthsBVN, photo, employment evidence; current and domiciliary accounts need references
Access Bank (diaspora FAQ)Nigerian passport, or foreign passport with proof of Nigerian origin, or Nigerian driver's licenceBanker's confirmation, or utility, bank or credit card statement within 3 monthsIDs, statements and bills notarised; scans by email need a signed indemnity

GTBank and Access both also offer to open accounts through the NRBVN platform: once your NRBVN is issued you choose the bank on the platform.

Getting documents certified in Canada

Most diaspora lists ask for notarised copies. In Ontario, the provincial notaries page (18 August 2026) says lawyers and paralegals are not notaries by right and must be appointed; notarisation is in person only, and the notary must check government photo ID. Other provinces have their own rules, so ask the notary what they can certify and bring originals. GTBank also lists a lawyer, a Nigerian embassy, a post office or GTBank subsidiary staff as acceptable certifiers, which can be cheaper; check your own bank's list.

Which Canadian address documents work

A hydro, gas, water or internet bill in your name, or a Canadian bank or credit card statement dated within three months, matches what these banks list. Our guide on Canadian proof of address a Nigerian bank will accept goes through each document.

Steps

  1. Confirm whether you have a BVN; if not, apply for an NRBVN at nrbvn.com and only there.
  2. Pick a bank and download its diaspora form and document list.
  3. Gather your Nigerian passport or other ID, a Canadian proof of address under three months old, and any references.
  4. Have copies notarised or certified as the bank specifies.
  5. Submit by the route the bank names (platform, email with indemnity, or courier), and keep copies and the tracking number.
  6. When the account opens, set up the bank's app and confirm how security codes reach you in Canada.

Common snags and how to avoid them

  • Name mismatches. If your passport, NIN and BVN show your name differently, for example after marriage, banks may hold the application. Fix the BVN record first.
  • Out-of-date address proof. GTBank and Access both want proof dated within three months. Courier time from Canada counts.
  • References. GTBank says current and domiciliary accounts need references, either an overseas banker's confirmation or two Nigerian current-account reference forms. Ask your Canadian branch for a banker's confirmation early; it can take days.
  • Email submissions. Access accepts scans by email but asks for a signed indemnity. Send originals by courier if the bank asks, and keep the tracking number.
  • Fees. GTBank lists charges for items such as tokens and statements on its NRN page. Ask for the current list before you start.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from Canada. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit, and the same account holds US dollars, pounds and euros. If you want naira saving goals, Savings Boxes work for naira held in Nigeria. See how it works.

Questions people ask

Can I open a Nigerian bank account from Canada without a BVN?

You need a BVN or NRBVN. NIBSS says the NRBVN is applied for online at nrbvn.com and issued within 72 hours of approval, after which you can pick a bank.

How much is NRBVN?

A CBN statement reported in July 2025 described the $50 charge as a recoverable processing cost. Check the fee shown on the platform when you apply.

Do I need to notarise documents for a Nigerian diaspora account?

Most banks ask for it. Access Bank asks for notarised IDs, statements and bills, and GTBank asks for notarised utility bills and stamped statements. Check your bank's own list.

Can I use my Canadian driver's licence as ID?

GTBank lists a notarised foreign passport or driver's licence among accepted IDs. Other banks prefer a Nigerian passport, so check the bank's own list.
