Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

NAQS phytosanitary certificate for food exports

Plant exports from Nigeria need a NAQS certificate issued after inspection and before shipment, now electronic. When it applies and how to get one.

The short answer

A phytosanitary certificate is needed when a Nigerian export of plants or plant products, such as fresh produce, leaves, seeds or grains, goes to a country that requires one, which most do. It is issued by the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service after inspection and before shipment, and must match the destination's import permit. Since 15 July 2024 NAQS has required electronic certificates (ePhyto); exporters apply online, pay fees through Remita, and buyers can verify certificates on NAQS's verification site.

A phytosanitary certificate is an official statement from the exporting country that a consignment of plants or plant products has been inspected and meets the importing country's plant health requirements. For Nigerian exporters it comes from one body: the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), an agency under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

When you need one

The requirement is set by the destination country. As examples from importing countries' own pages:

  • Great Britain: most fruit and vegetables from outside the EU need a phytosanitary certificate; some items such as pineapple, coconut, banana, plantain and mango are exempt for travellers, as are processed and packaged plant products (GOV.UK).
  • Ireland: plants, fruit, vegetables, cut flowers, seeds, soil and timber from outside the EU need a certificate at entry, with a short list of exemptions (DAFM).
  • Your buyer's import permit may set its own certificate conditions; NAQS says the certificate must follow them.

Animal products are different. NAQS covers animal and aquatic quarantine too, but those consignments need sanitary or veterinary certification, and many destinations refuse Nigerian meat products regardless (see smoked fish and meat). Processed, packaged food usually also needs NAFDAC export documents; see NAFDAC export permits.

How a Nigerian exporter gets one

  1. Know the destination's rules. Get the importer's permit or the destination's import conditions; NAQS's guidelines say the certificate must be in accordance with the conditions on the import permit, and some countries want additional declarations such as harvest date and place.
  2. Apply electronically. NAQS's homepage lists phytosanitary certificate application among its export services, and points exporters to its ePhyto platform (ng.ephytoexchange.org) and eServices portal (eservices.naqs.gov.ng).
  3. Pay the fees. NAQS fees are paid through Remita; amounts are on NAQS's User Fees page. We could not see current figures, so check them there.
  4. Present the consignment for inspection. NAQS inspects before certifying. Its homepage also lists fast-track commodity examination and seaport inspection and certification.
  5. Treat if required. If fumigation is needed, use only approved fumigants; NAQS warns that residues of unapproved fumigants can lead to rejection.
  6. Receive the electronic certificate and make sure the details match the cargo exactly.

ePhyto: no more paper

BusinessDay reported in June 2024 that NAQS had completed its electronic phytosanitary certification project, linked to the international IPPC ePhyto Hub, and that compliance became mandatory from 15 July 2024. An official quoted said there would be 'no more paper documents'. The change also means exporters need not travel to NAQS regional offices to complete formalities. At the time, about 20% of NAQS stakeholders were already using the system.

Documents to have ready

Exact requirements depend on the product and destination, but exporters are typically asked for:

  • the importer's permit or a copy of the destination's import conditions;
  • the commercial invoice and packing list, with descriptions that match the cargo labels;
  • details of any treatment or fumigation, and the fumigant used;
  • any additional declarations the destination requires, such as harvest date and place;
  • for processed food, the NAFDAC export documents.

Why certified shipments still get rejected

NAQS's revised agro-export guidelines (June 2019) list the common reasons:

  • the produce carries pests or toxic substances;
  • the certificate is forged, altered or mutilated, including any change to the date, weight, volume or signature;
  • cargo labels do not describe the contents exactly as the certificate does;
  • uncertified produce is hidden in a certified consignment, which leads to rejection of the whole shipment;
  • the product is prohibited by the destination country, whatever the certificate says;
  • required advance notice or additional declarations were not given.

Each of these is avoidable with care at the packing stage. Exporters who ship regularly keep a checklist per destination and a sample photo of each correctly labelled carton.

The last point is critical: a certificate cannot make a prohibited product admissible. Nigerian dried beans, for example, are suspended from the EU and Great Britain (see the beans suspension).

For buyers abroad: checking a certificate

NAQS's homepage links a certificate verification site (verifyphyto.naqsportal.net). Ask your supplier for the certificate number before shipment and check it there, then compare product, quantity, consignee and port with your order. A supplier offering a certificate without inspection, or for an unusual fee to an individual, is a warning sign; see checks before paying a supplier.

What to check first

  • Does the destination require a certificate for this product, and is the product permitted at all?
  • Do you have the importer's permit and any additional declarations required?
  • Is the exporter registered for NAQS eServices and ePhyto?
  • Are labels, invoices and the certificate consistent?
  • Has the exporter registered with the NEPC? The Nigeria library covers NEPC registration.

Where Pryme fits

Exporters pay NAQS, labs and freight agents in naira while selling in dollars, pounds or euros. A Pryme Business Account holds all four currencies with local details for each (business multicurrency), and invoicing helps you bill buyers abroad.

Questions people ask

How do I get a phytosanitary certificate in Nigeria?

Apply to NAQS electronically through its ePhyto and eServices portals, pay the fees through Remita, present the consignment for inspection, and receive the electronic certificate before shipment.

Does NAQS still issue paper phytosanitary certificates?

No. NAQS made electronic certification mandatory from 15 July 2024, according to BusinessDay's report.

How much is the NAQS phytosanitary certificate fee?

NAQS publishes its fees on its User Fees page and collects them through Remita. Check the current amount there.

Can a buyer abroad verify a NAQS certificate?

Yes. NAQS's homepage links a verification site, verifyphyto.naqsportal.net. Check the certificate number and details against your order.
