Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Smoked fish and meat from Nigeria: why most are refused

Meat from Nigeria cannot be imported commercially into GB and faces bans in most markets; smoked fish can, but only from approved plants with certificates.

The short answer

Most smoked meat and fish from Nigeria is refused because it does not come from a plant approved by the importing country, with an official health certificate and pre-notification. Nigeria is listed by Great Britain for fishery products but not for meat, meat products, poultry or dairy, so commercial meat cannot enter GB at all. In the US, FDA has an import alert on uneviscerated smoked and dried fish that names Nigeria.

Why animal products are treated differently

Products of animal origin carry animal-disease and food-safety risks that plant goods do not, so importing countries approve the exporting country first, then individual plants, then each consignment. A smoked catfish bought in a market and packed at home fails at the first or second step, however clean it looks. That is the main reason Nigerian smoked fish and meat are refused: not taste or quality, but the missing approvals.

Great Britain: fish yes, meat no

Defra's approved-country lists (October 2026) show Nigeria listed for fishery products, with no remarks, and not listed for fresh meat of ungulates, meat products, poultry, milk products or the residue control plans that cover aquaculture, honey and eggs. In practice:

  • Meat, suya, kilishi, smoked bushmeat, dairy: cannot be imported commercially from Nigeria into GB.
  • Smoked or dried fish and crayfish: can be imported commercially if they come from an establishment on the approved list, travel with the official health certificate, enter through a border control post that handles them, and are pre-notified on IPAFFS at least one working day before arrival (GOV.UK).
  • Personal luggage: GOV.UK allows up to 20 kg of fish per person from non-EU countries (fresh gutted, dried, cooked, cured or smoked) and no meat or meat products. Personal allowances are not for stock.

The UK 2026/27 monitoring plan also lists aflatoxins in fish products such as bonga powder from West African countries and PAHs in fish products as sampling priorities, so approved fish can still be sampled at the border.

European Union

The European Commission's personal-imports page says travellers may not bring meat, milk or their products from non-EU countries, with fishery products allowed up to 20 kg or the weight of one fish if heavier. Commercial imports need an approved country, an approved establishment and an official certificate, as in GB. We did not confirm on an EU page whether Nigeria and which Nigerian plants are listed for fishery products; ask your border control post or the competent authority before you order.

United States

  • Fish. FDA's Nigeria import-alert page (posted 21 October 2026) includes alert 16-74 on uneviscerated salt-cured, dried or smoked fish, and 16-81 on seafood with Salmonella. Whole smoked fish with the guts left in is the classic Nigerian product, and it falls squarely under 16-74.
  • Meat. Meat, poultry and egg products under USDA's exclusive jurisdiction are excluded from FDA's prior-notice rule (21 CFR Part 1 Subpart I) because USDA regulates them. Check USDA's list of countries eligible to export meat to the US before considering any Nigerian meat product.

Approved routes that do work

  1. Buy from an approved plant. Ask the supplier for its approval number for your market and check it against the official list for that market.
  2. Get the official health certificate issued by the Nigerian competent authority for that consignment, in the format your market requires.
  3. Pre-notify and route correctly. File on the system your market uses (IPAFFS in GB) and send the cargo to a border post that handles fishery products.
  4. Meet the Nigerian export side. Commercial exports need NAFDAC certification where it applies and an NXP; see NAFDAC export permits.
  5. Choose processed forms that fit the rules. Gutted, properly packed fish from an approved plant has a route; home-smoked, uneviscerated fish does not.

Powders, seasonings and mixed foods

Ground crayfish, bonga powder and stockfish flakes are still products of animal origin, not spices. The UK monitoring plan lists bonga powder under fish products for aflatoxin sampling, which tells you how border staff see it. Seasoning cubes and soup mixes that contain fish or meat ingredients may fall under composite-product rules, which depend on the proportion and processing of the animal ingredient. Ask your border control post how a specific product is classed before you order a pallet, and keep the full ingredient list from the maker to show them.

What happens to refused goods

Consignments without the right approvals are usually destroyed or sent back at the importer's cost, and repeated failures can bring tighter checks for everyone shipping the same product from Nigeria. Parcels are not a way round this: commercial animal products need the same approvals however they travel. See crayfish and stockfish from Nigeria and the bushmeat ban.

Where Pryme fits

Approved processors usually want part payment up front. A Pryme Business Account lets you pay them in naira from the same account that holds your sales in pounds, dollars or euros, with the rate and fee shown before you approve in Swap. Keep each payment's verifiable receipt with the health certificate for your records.

Questions people ask

Can I import smoked fish from Nigeria to the UK to sell?

Yes, but only from an establishment approved for GB, with an official health certificate, IPAFFS pre-notification and entry through a suitable border control post.

Can I bring suya or kilishi from Nigeria?

Not into GB or the EU: no meat or meat products from non-EU countries are allowed in personal luggage, and Nigeria is not listed for commercial meat into GB.

Why is Nigerian smoked fish refused in the US?

FDA alert 16-74 covers uneviscerated salt-cured, dried or smoked fish, and Nigeria is on it. Whole fish with the guts in is detained.

How much fish can I carry in luggage?

GOV.UK and the European Commission allow up to 20 kg of fish per person from non-EU countries, for personal use only.
