Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Loans for police officers in Nigeria: NPF MFB and other routes

How police officers borrow: NPF Microfinance Bank, payroll lending through salary deductions, police cooperatives, and what deductions require.

The short answer

Police officers in Nigeria mainly borrow through three channels: NPF Microfinance Bank, which was set up for serving and retired police personnel; payroll loans repaid by deduction from salary; and police cooperative societies. Any deduction from pay needs your written authority and should keep total deductions affordable; the Labour Act's one-third ceiling is the benchmark many lenders use.

NPF Microfinance Bank

NPF Microfinance Bank began in 1993 as NPF Community Bank in Obalende, Lagos, and has been listed on the Nigerian Exchange since December 2010. According to its NGX filings for 2024, as summarised by Wikipedia, the Nigeria Police Co-operative Society holds about 62.6% of its shares and the NPF Welfare Insurance Scheme about 15.6%. Its stated primary constituency is serving and retired police personnel and other security services, although it also banks the general public.

The bank offers consumer and MSME loans. Product names, rates and limits change, so ask at a branch or on its official channels for the current terms, and get them in writing. Because it is a microfinance bank, it is licensed by the CBN, and deposits are insured by the NDIC up to the microfinance bank limit.

Payroll lending

A payroll loan is repaid by deduction from salary before it reaches you. For an officer, that means the lender relies on the police pay system to deduct and remit each month. Several commercial banks and finance companies run public-sector payroll products; see civil servant loans and IPPIS and how IPPIS deductions work for the mechanics as they apply to federal workers.

What a deduction requires

  • Your written authority. No lender can take money from your salary without a signed mandate or deduction authority.
  • A repayment ceiling. The Labour Act (section 5(7)) says total deductions from a worker's wages in a month must not exceed one third of that month's wages. Public officers may be governed by public service rules rather than the Labour Act, but lenders commonly apply a similar test; Sterling Bank's payroll loan page, for instance, uses 33.3% of net monthly salary.
  • Room in your pay. Existing deductions, such as cooperative contributions and other loans, count against the ceiling.
  • A record. Ask for a schedule showing every deduction and the date the loan ends, and check each pay slip against it.

Police cooperative societies

Cooperatives at command or formation level take monthly contributions from members and lend them a multiple of their savings. The interest is usually lower than commercial loans, and repayment is by deduction. Read the bye-laws: how many months you must save before borrowing, how the multiple is set, and what happens to your savings if you are posted elsewhere or leave the force.

Worked example: how much room is left?

  • Net monthly pay: ₦210,000. One third: ₦70,000.
  • Cooperative contribution: ₦15,000. Existing cooperative loan repayment: ₦20,000. Room left: ₦35,000.
  • New loan at an example 3% a month flat over 18 months: every ₦100,000 costs ₦54,000 interest, so ₦154,000 repaid, or ₦8,555.56 a month.
  • Largest loan within the room: ₦35,000 ÷ ₦8,555.56 × ₦100,000 ≈ ₦409,000.

Warnings

  • Do not sign blank deduction forms or hand over your pay slip login to an agent.
  • Be wary of anyone claiming to be a 'police loan' officer who asks for a processing fee before approval.
  • If a deduction continues after the loan is repaid, ask the lender for a liquidation letter and take it to your pay office.
  • Check digital lenders on the FCCPC approvals list before applying; banks and MFBs are CBN-licensed.

What to check first

  1. The lender's licence (CBN for banks and MFBs; FCCPC approval for digital lenders).
  2. The total naira cost and the end date.
  3. That total deductions stay within one third of net pay.
  4. Who to contact if a deduction is wrong.

Officers close to retirement

Lenders cap the age at which a loan must end and look at how long your salary will continue. An officer two years from retirement will usually be offered a shorter tenor, and the lender may ask how the loan will be repaid if it runs past your last salary. Retired officers can still borrow against a pension paid into an account; see pensioner loans. Pension savings in your RSA cannot be used as collateral.

Comparing offers

CooperativeMFB loanBank payroll loan
Amount₦300,000₦300,000₦300,000
Example price1.5% a month flat4% a month flat3% a month flat
Term12 months12 months12 months
Interest₦54,000₦144,000₦108,000
Monthly repayment₦29,500₦37,000₦34,000

The cheapest option is often the cooperative, but only if you have saved long enough to qualify. Add upfront fees to each before deciding.

A final point on records: keep every pay slip for the life of the loan. If a deduction is higher than the schedule, or appears twice in one month, the pay slip is your evidence when you raise it with the lender and your pay office. Ask the lender for a written statement of the outstanding balance at least once a year, and again before you take any new facility.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not run payroll loans. Officers in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt who use a Pryme Personal Account may be offered Loans on Spaces for spending with Spaces merchants, based on how the account is run, with the full agreement shown before you accept.

Questions people ask

How can a police officer get a loan in Nigeria?

Through NPF Microfinance Bank, payroll loans repaid from salary, police cooperatives, or licensed lenders. Each needs your written authority for deductions.

Is NPF Microfinance Bank only for police?

Its primary constituency is serving and retired police and security personnel, but it also serves the general public.

How much can be deducted from my salary for a loan?

The Labour Act caps total deductions at one third of monthly wages for workers it covers, and many lenders use a similar 33.3% limit.

What do I do if a loan deduction continues after I finish paying?

Get a liquidation or closure letter from the lender and present it to your pay office to stop the deduction.
