Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Loans for the self-employed in Nigeria: what counts as income

How Nigerian lenders measure self-employed income from statements, invoices and turnover, and the loan products that suit irregular earnings.

The short answer

For self-employed borrowers, Nigerian lenders count income they can see: money flowing into a business or personal account over six to twelve months, backed by invoices, receipts and, for larger loans, accounts and CAC records. They look at average and lowest monthly inflows, not your best month, and strip out transfers between your own accounts. Products that fit irregular income include microfinance and bank business loans, asset finance and registered digital lenders; Sterling Bank's business support facility, for example, asks for a business at least three years old with ₦2 million monthly turnover (Oct 2026).

A salaried applicant hands over a payslip. A self-employed applicant has to build the equivalent from scratch. The good news is that lenders in Nigeria are used to this: traders, artisans, consultants and freelancers make up a large share of borrowers. The bad news is that they are cautious about what they count, and income you cannot show may as well not exist.

What lenders count as income

EvidenceHow lenders treat it
Bank inflows from customersThe core measure. Lenders average several months and look closely at the weakest months.
Transfers from your own other accountsUsually removed; moving money around is not income.
Cash takingsCounted only when deposited. Cash that never reaches the bank is invisible.
Invoices and receiptsSupport the statement by showing who pays you and how regularly.
Contracts or purchase ordersShow future income; useful for contract or LPO financing.
Management or audited accountsNeeded for larger loans; show profit, not just turnover.
Tax records and CAC registrationShow the business is formal and established.

Turnover is not profit

A trader who turns over ₦3 million a month on a 10% margin keeps about ₦300,000 before personal spending. A lender who reads turnover alone would over-lend; good lenders estimate margin from your sector and accounts. When you present your numbers, show both.

A worked example

Six months of example inflows
₦1,800,000, ₦1,100,000, ₦2,400,000, ₦900,000, ₦1,600,000, ₦1,400,000
Average
₦1,533,333 a month
Lowest month
₦900,000
What a cautious lender sees
Turnover averages ₦1,533,333, but one month fell to ₦900,000. A repayment set from the average could be missed in the weak month.

In this example, a sensible instalment is one the business can meet from the weakest month after costs, not the average. Ask for a repayment schedule that matches your seasons where the lender allows it, for example lower instalments in your known slow months.

Products that fit self-employed income

  • Microfinance bank business loans. Smaller amounts, often weekly or monthly repayment, assessed on statements and site visits. Renmoney, a CBN-licensed MFB, advertises business loans on its site.
  • Bank business loans and facilities. Larger and cheaper, but need history. Sterling Bank's business support facility lends up to ₦5 million without collateral, maximum ₦20 million, to businesses at least 3 years old with turnover of at least ₦2 million a month, with 2% management and 2.5% insurance paid upfront (as at Oct 2026).
  • Asset finance. The equipment or vehicle secures the loan, so income history matters less.
  • Registered digital lenders. Fast and small; check the FCCPC register and the total repayable.
  • Cooperatives. Lend against your savings with the cooperative; see how cooperative loans work.

Why self-employed applications get declined

Most refusals come down to a handful of patterns that are visible on the statement before anyone reads your application:

  • Mixed accounts. Business receipts, family transfers, rent and school fees all in one account make it impossible to see what the business earns.
  • Round-tripping. Money moved in from another account you own and straight back out looks like inflated turnover, and most lenders discount it.
  • Gambling and betting debits. Many lenders treat regular betting transactions as a sign of unstable cash flow.
  • Existing short loans. Several digital loans repaid and re-borrowed each month tell a lender your cash is already committed.
  • Too little history. Three months of statements in a new account rarely supports more than a small loan.

None of these is permanent. Lenders read the most recent months most closely, so six months of cleaner records can change the outcome.

Personal account or business account?

A sole trader can borrow on a personal account, and many small lenders accept it. A separate business account, ideally in the registered business name, makes the income easier to read and is usually required once you move to bank business loans or government-linked schemes. If you have run everything through a personal account for years, keep it open for history but start routing all customer payments to the business account now.

How to make your income visible

  1. Run all business money through one business account, separate from personal spending.
  2. Ask customers to pay by transfer and issue an invoice or receipt for each sale.
  3. Deposit cash takings daily rather than holding them.
  4. Keep simple monthly accounts: sales, costs, what you took out.
  5. Register the business with CAC if you plan to borrow more than a small amount.
  6. Check your credit report before applying; the Credit Reporting Act 2017 entitles you to a free report each year.

Six months of clean, separated records will change the answer you get more than any application letter. Our guide on bank statements for loan applications shows what lenders read first.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account keeps business money separate, with invoicing and bank-transfer checkout so each sale leaves a record, and statements can be issued as verifiable documents through VerifyDoc.ai for a lender to check. Pryme itself is not a lender.

Questions people ask

Can a self-employed person get a loan in Nigeria?

Yes. Lenders assess income from bank inflows, invoices and accounts instead of payslips. Microfinance banks, banks, asset financiers, cooperatives and registered digital lenders all lend to the self-employed.

How do banks calculate self-employed income?

They average several months of inflows, remove transfers between your own accounts, look at the weakest months and, for larger loans, check profit in your accounts.

Do I need CAC registration to get a business loan?

Not always for small MFB or digital loans, but most bank business loans and government-backed schemes ask for it.

Is turnover the same as income for a loan?

No. Turnover is everything received; income is what is left after costs. Good lenders estimate both.
