2023Multicurrency

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Loans for salary earners in Nigeria: what your payslip gets you

The loan types open to salaried staff in Nigeria, from salary advances to payroll loans and cooperatives, and why salary domiciliation matters.

The short answer

A regular salary gives you access to four main loan types in Nigeria: a salary advance or payday loan repaid on your next payday, a bank personal or payroll loan repaid over months or years, digital loans from registered lenders, and staff cooperative loans. The cheapest and largest usually require your salary to be paid into the lending bank (domiciliation) or deducted at source, because that is how the lender is repaid. Sterling Bank's payroll loan, for example, caps repayments at 33.3% of net monthly salary (Oct 2026).

Lenders in Nigeria like salary earners for one reason: predictable money arriving on a known date. That predictability is what your payslip buys you. It does not buy you a loan of any size from anyone; it buys you access to products designed around payday, priced according to how sure the lender is that it will be repaid.

The four product families

ProductTypical shapeExample from a lender's page (Oct 2026)
Salary advance / payday loanA share of one month's pay, repaid on next paydayAccess Bank PayDay Loan: up to 75% of monthly salary less active loans, maximum ₦2,000,000, due in 30 days or on next salary
Bank personal loanLarger sum, monthly instalments over 1 to 3 yearsAccess Bank Personal Loan: up to 75% of net annual salary with terminal benefits, 50% without, up to 36 months
Payroll loan from a bank or finance companyLonger tenor, repaid by deduction from salarySterling Bank payroll loan: 39% a year, 1% management fee, 2% insurance, up to 60 months
Staff cooperative loanMultiple of your savings, deducted from paySet by each cooperative's by-laws

Digital loan apps sit alongside these. They can be quick, but their tenors are short and their cost is often higher, which is why they suit a small gap rather than a large purchase. Check any app against the FCCPC's approved list first; see how to check a loan app is registered.

Salary advance versus personal loan

A salary advance is designed for a gap of days or weeks; a personal loan is designed for a purchase you will repay over a year or more. Using the first to do the job of the second means rolling an expensive short loan month after month. Our comparison of payday loans, salary advances and personal loans sets the three side by side.

Why salary domiciliation matters

Domiciliation means your employer pays your salary into an account at the lending bank. The bank then collects its instalment as the salary lands. FirstBank's FirstAdvance page, for instance, says repayment is "taken immediately salary is received", with a lien on the account. Because collection is close to certain, domiciled products are larger and cheaper. Several banks make it a condition: Stanbic IBTC's unsecured loan requires your salary to be paid into a Stanbic IBTC account, and Sterling Bank asks for two months' salary into Sterling for its payroll loan. Access Bank says salary account holders get a reduction on loan interest.

Where moving your salary is not possible, some lenders use payroll platforms instead. Access Bank's PayDay Loan page says your salary need not be at Access if it is paid through Remita. Payroll lenders such as Zedvance, which describes itself as licensed by the CBN, advertise payroll loans for public and private sector staff.

How much your salary supports

Lenders cap the share of your pay that can go to repayments. Sterling Bank's payroll loan uses a debt service ratio of 33.3% of net monthly salary (as at Oct 2026). Separately, the Labour Act limits total deductions from a worker's wages in any month to one third of that month's wages, although its definition of "worker" excludes people in administrative, executive, technical or professional roles.

Example: affordability
Net monthly salary ₦300,000. At a 33.3% cap, the maximum monthly repayment across all loans is about ₦99,900.
Example: payroll loan cost
₦1,000,000 over 24 months at 39% a year on a reducing balance gives a monthly instalment of about ₦60,649, total repaid about ₦1,455,574. A 1% management fee (₦10,000) and 2% insurance (₦20,000) are added, using Sterling's published fee rates as at Oct 2026.

The example instalment fits under the cap with room to spare, but only if you have no other loans. Lenders add up every existing repayment they can see on your credit report.

What to check before you borrow

  • The rate and the period it covers: monthly, yearly or flat.
  • Every upfront fee: management, insurance, VAT on fees.
  • Whether a lien or salary deduction is involved, and what happens if your salary is late.
  • Whether you can repay early without a penalty.
  • The total amount you will repay, in naira.

For context, the CBN's money market indicators put the average prime lending rate at 17.86% and the average maximum lending rate at 29.20% for August 2026. Check the CBN page for the latest month.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not a payroll lender. If your salary is paid into a Pryme Personal Account, Loans on Spaces from Solid Allianze MFB may be offered based on how the account is run; you see the amount, cost and repayment date and decide whether to accept, and the money is spent only with Spaces merchants. The cost is shown in the app before you accept.

Questions people ask

What loans can a salary earner get in Nigeria?

Salary advances and payday loans, bank personal loans, payroll loans from banks and finance companies, staff cooperative loans and digital loans from registered lenders.

Do I need to move my salary account to get a loan?

For many bank products, yes. Stanbic IBTC's unsecured loan requires salary into Stanbic IBTC. Some products, such as Access Bank's PayDay Loan for Remita-paid staff, do not.

How much can I borrow on my salary?

Lenders cap repayments at a share of net pay. Sterling Bank's payroll loan uses 33.3% of net monthly salary; Access Bank's personal loan goes up to 75% of net annual salary with terminal benefits (Oct 2026).

Is a salary advance cheaper than a loan app?

Often, because bank salary products are repaid from your salary as it arrives. Compare the total repayable on both before deciding.
