Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Pensioner loans in Nigeria: who lends to retirees

Banks, MFBs and cooperatives lend to retirees against the monthly pension, not the RSA. Age caps, repayment ceilings and what to bring.

The short answer

Retirees in Nigeria usually borrow against their monthly pension inflow, not their RSA, which cannot be used as collateral. The main routes are pension-backed payroll loans from banks (Sterling Bank, for example, lists a repayment cap of 40% of net monthly income for annuitants and a maximum age of 65 at loan maturity), microfinance banks, and retirees' cooperatives, all of which ask for pension pay slips and bank statements.

What a lender is really lending against

A working borrower is assessed on salary and an employer who confirms it. A retiree has no employer, so lenders look at the next best thing: a pension paid on a known date, for life or for a set period, into an account the lender can see. That is why pension-backed lending exists, and why the Retirement Savings Account itself is never the security. Our explainer on borrowing against an RSA sets out why pension funds cannot be pledged.

Retirees receive pensions in different ways: programmed withdrawal from a PFA, an annuity bought from a life insurer, or a defined-benefit pension paid by a government pension board. The source matters because it decides who can confirm the payment to a lender and how long it will last.

Who lends to retirees

Lender typeHow it usually worksWhat to watch
Commercial bank payroll loanRepaid from the pension credited to an account at the bank; Sterling Bank's page includes annuitants and caps repayment at 40% of net monthly income for themAge at maturity limits; insurance and management fees
Microfinance bankSmaller loans, often with a guarantor or cooperative linkHigher rates; check the CBN licence
Retirees' or staff cooperativeLoan as a multiple of your savings in the cooperativeMembership rules; what happens if you stop contributing
Digital lenderBased on account inflows and credit recordShort terms; confirm FCCPC approval

Bank pages we read in October 2026 do not publish a dedicated 'pensioner loan' brand in every case; often the retiree is served under the same payroll product with an annuitant category. Ask the bank whether its payroll loan covers pensioners and which pension payers it accepts.

Age caps

Age is the hardest limit for retirees. Lenders cap the age at which the loan must be fully repaid, partly because credit life insurance, which pays off the loan on death, becomes costly or unavailable at older ages. Two published examples:

  • Sterling Bank's payroll loan: borrower aged 65 or under at maturity.
  • Stanbic IBTC unsecured personal loan: under 60 by the end of the tenor (its FAQ gives an 18 to 59 age band).

A 63-year-old applying for Sterling's product would therefore be limited to about two years. See age limits for bank loans for more banks.

What to bring

  1. Pension pay slips or a pension advice for recent months from your PFA, insurer or pension board.
  2. Bank statements showing the pension landing on its usual date; see preparing a bank statement for a loan.
  3. Valid ID, BVN and proof of address.
  4. Your retirement letter or evidence of the pension arrangement (annuity certificate, PFA letter).
  5. Details of any existing deductions from the pension.

Worked example: what a 40% cap means

  • Net monthly pension: ₦180,000. 40% cap: ₦72,000 a month for all loan repayments.
  • Existing cooperative deduction: ₦12,000. Room left: ₦60,000.
  • Loan at an example flat 3% a month over 24 months: each ₦100,000 borrowed costs ₦72,000 interest, so ₦172,000 repaid, or ₦7,166.67 a month.
  • Largest loan within the cap: ₦60,000 ÷ ₦7,166.67 × ₦100,000 ≈ ₦837,200.

Borrowing up to the cap leaves 60% of the pension for living costs and medicine. Many retirees choose a lower amount.

Warnings for retirees

  • Never give anyone your PFA PIN or sign a pension transfer form as part of a loan.
  • Check digital lenders on the FCCPC approvals list; banks and MFBs are licensed by the CBN.
  • Read the credit life insurance clause: who is paid and when.
  • Avoid loans that end after the lender's age cap; you may be asked for a guarantor or a shorter term.

Where your pension comes from changes the conversation

A lender will ask who pays you, because that decides who can confirm the payment and how long it lasts. If you are on programmed withdrawal, your PFA pays from your RSA and the payments can be reviewed over time. If you bought an annuity, a life insurer pays you, usually for life. If you retired under an older defined-benefit arrangement, a government pension board pays. Bring a recent letter from whichever body pays you, confirming the monthly amount and the account it goes into.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Is the rate quoted per month or per year, flat or on a reducing balance?
  2. What upfront fees and insurance are deducted from the amount I receive?
  3. Who is paid if I die before the loan ends, and does insurance clear the balance?
  4. Can I repay early, and is there a charge for doing so?
  5. What happens if my pension is paid late one month?

Get the answers in writing, and if a family member is helping you, let them read the offer too.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme's Personal Assistant, Eva by default, can track pension credits and bill dates and remind you before payments are due; nothing moves without your approval. See the Personal Assistant.

Questions people ask

Can a retiree collect loan from a bank in Nigeria?

Yes, from banks that accept pensions as the repayment source, usually with a repayment cap and an age limit at maturity. Sterling Bank, for example, lists 40% of net monthly income for annuitants and age 65 at maturity.

What is the maximum age for a loan in Nigeria?

It varies by lender. Sterling's payroll loan says 65 at maturity; Stanbic's unsecured loan says under 60 at the end of the tenor.

Can my PFA give me a loan?

No. PFAs manage your RSA and cannot lend it or let it be pledged.

Do cooperatives lend to pensioners?

Many retirees' and staff cooperatives do, usually as a multiple of what you have saved with them. Rules are set by each cooperative.
