Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Loans for POS agents in Nigeria: float and terminal financing

How POS agents finance float and terminals, why repayment often comes straight out of daily settlements, and what to check before you borrow.

The short answer

POS agents usually borrow for two things: float, the cash and wallet balance needed to serve withdrawals, and the terminal itself. Where the lender also processes the agent's transactions, repayment is commonly taken from daily settlements before the balance reaches the agent, so the loan's cost must be compared against the agent's daily margin, not monthly income.

What POS agents borrow for

An agent's business is a liquidity business. When a customer withdraws ₦20,000, the agent hands over ₦20,000 of cash and receives ₦20,000 into the terminal wallet plus a charge. When the cash runs out, the agent cannot serve the next customer until the wallet is turned back into cash, which costs time. More float means more transactions per day, and that is what most agent borrowing is for.

  • Float loans: short loans, often days or weeks, credited to the agent's wallet or account to increase working balance. See POS float loans and their daily cost.
  • Terminal financing: paying for a POS device in instalments, or receiving one on a deposit or activity-based arrangement from a provider.
  • Small business loans: for agents who also run a shop, a general working-capital loan from an MFB or cooperative.

Who finances agents

SourceHow it typically worksWhat to watch
Your terminal or agent-network providerOffers based on your transaction history on its platform; repayment swept from settlementsRead how much is swept daily and what happens on slow days
Microfinance bankSmall loans with guarantor or group liabilityWeekly repayment schedules; group default rules
Cooperatives or ajo groupsLoan as a multiple of savingsMembership period before borrowing
Licensed digital lendersAssess your bank account inflowsConfirm FCCPC approval; check full cost

Not every provider offers credit, and products change. Rely only on what your provider's app or written terms show you, not on what another agent says they were offered.

Why repayment comes from settlements

A provider that settles your transactions can deduct repayment before paying you, the way a payroll lender deducts from salary. This lowers its risk, which is why such loans can be offered to agents without payslips or collateral. For you, it changes the arithmetic: on a slow day the sweep may take most of what you earned. Ask:

  1. Is repayment a fixed daily amount, or a percentage of each settlement?
  2. What happens if settlements fall short: does a late charge apply, and does the shortfall roll over?
  3. Can you repay early without penalty?
  4. Is the loan reported to credit bureaus?

Terminal financing

Agents get terminals in different ways: buying outright, paying a refundable caution deposit, or receiving a device that must hit a monthly transaction volume or be returned. Check whether you own the terminal after the last instalment, who pays for repairs, and what happens if it is stolen. For the costs agents pay in electricity token sales and transfers, our guides on POS versus bank transfer and POS fraud are useful background.

What lenders look at

  • Daily transaction count and value over the last three to six months.
  • Consistency: the same location and hours, without long gaps.
  • Chargebacks, disputes or fraud flags on your terminal.
  • Your BVN-linked credit record.
  • For MFB loans, a guarantor or group and sometimes your CAC business name registration.

Worked example: does more float pay?

An agent processes ₦300,000 of withdrawals a day with ₦150,000 of float, earning an example net margin of 0.5% (₦1,500 a day). With an extra ₦150,000 borrowed at an example ₦600 a day, she processes ₦500,000 a day: margin ₦2,500. Extra margin ₦1,000, minus ₦600 cost, leaves ₦400 a day. If the extra float only lifts volume to ₦400,000, extra margin is ₦500 and the loan loses ₦100 a day.

Building a borrowing record as an agent

Agents who borrow successfully usually look predictable on paper. Trade at the same location and hours, keep the terminal active every trading day, and settle to a bank account in your own or your business name. Register a business name with the CAC if you plan to borrow from banks; it opens business accounts and some loan products. Keep a simple daily book of opening float, transactions, charges earned and closing cash. When a lender asks why you need more float, a book showing turned-away customers on busy days is strong evidence.

Agent with a shop versus stand-alone agent

An agent who also sells airtime, drinks or provisions has two income streams and more to show a lender, but must keep the two apart: float should never be used to restock the shop. A stand-alone agent has one income stream and depends heavily on location; lenders will look closely at how steady daily volumes are over several months.

Whichever route you use, read the agreement for a clause on terminal suspension. Some arrangements let the provider restrict the terminal if repayments fall behind, which stops the very income that repays the loan. Know in advance what triggers a restriction, how you are warned, and how quickly service is restored once you catch up.

Where Pryme fits

Agents who also run a shop can use a Pryme Business Account to keep shop sales separate from POS float, and take bank-transfer payments through checkout free of charge. Pryme does not lend float.

Questions people ask

How can a POS agent get loan?

From the terminal provider if it offers credit, a microfinance bank, a cooperative or a licensed digital lender. Providers that settle your transactions often repay from daily settlements.

What is POS float loan?

A short loan that increases the cash or wallet balance you use to serve withdrawals, usually repaid in days or weeks.

Can I get a POS machine on credit?

Some providers sell terminals in instalments or on deposit or activity-based terms. Check who owns the device and what you owe if you stop.

Why is my POS loan repayment taken from my settlement?

Lenders that process your transactions can deduct repayment before paying you. Your agreement should state the daily amount or percentage.
