Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Land banking in Nigeria from abroad: how it works and the risks

How land banking works in Nigeria, why it is marketed to the diaspora, the legal and fraud risks, and the checks to make before you pay a company or plan.

The short answer

Land banking means buying land, often undeveloped, and holding it to sell later at a higher price. Done directly, the risks are title, encroachment and liquidity. Done through a company that pools buyers or promises returns, add the risk that the scheme itself is unregistered: the SEC lists unrealistic promises and lack of regulatory approval as red flags, and Lagos requires real estate dealers to register with LASRERA.

Land banking is sold hard to Nigerians abroad: "buy now in the next growth corridor, sell in three years for double". Some buyers do well. Others discover the land was never the company's to sell, or that the promised buy-back was only a promise. Understanding which kind of land banking you are being offered is the first step.

Two different things called land banking

Direct ownership

You buy a specific plot with your name on the deed and hold it. Your return depends on what someone will pay later, minus costs. Your risks are the usual land risks: defective title, government acquisition, encroachment while you are away, and the time it takes to find a buyer. See documents to see before paying and keeping possession from abroad.

Schemes and plans

A company sells "units", fractions or instalment plans in a larger parcel, sometimes with a fixed return or a buy-back promise. Here you depend on the company as well as the land. If the arrangement pools many people's money and pays returns from the efforts of the promoter, it may look more like an investment scheme than a land sale, and capital market rules may apply. Ask a lawyer and the SEC if in doubt.

Why regulators are involved

  • The SEC's Known Investment Scams page lists phantom schemes, Ponzi schemes and offshore shell companies, with red flags of "unrealistic promises, lack of regulatory approvals, and opaque business operations". Its schedule of illegal operators sealed up includes Vekt Capital Investment Ltd and Oxford International Group (both 2022).
  • The Investments and Securities Act 2025 names Ponzi and pyramid schemes as prohibited, with penalties summarised by The Trusted Advisors (Mondaq, May 2025) as not less than ₦20,000,000 and/or up to 10 years' imprisonment.
  • In Lagos, the LASRERA Law requires real estate dealers, including developers, to register and hold a permit, and requires developers to list their projects; the register is open to public inspection (Famsville analysis, May 2022).
  • LASRERA reported 1,702 real estate fraud cases received since 2020 and ₦478.13 million plus 18 properties recovered over four years (Peoples Gazette, May 2024).

The risks in plain terms

RiskWhat it looks likeCheck
TitleCompany sells land it does not own or has not got consent forRegistry search on the parent title; who holds it
AllocationYou own "a plot" but not a specific, surveyed onePlot number, survey plan in your name, charting
Promised returnsFixed percentage or guaranteed buy-backWho pays it, from what, in writing; SEC status
EncroachmentOthers build on your plot while you are awayFence, caretaker, periodic visits
LiquidityNo buyer when you want to sellAssume years, not months
CostsSurvey, deed, consent, development leviesAsk for every fee in writing

Checks before paying a land banking company

  1. Confirm the company on CAC and, in Lagos, on the LASRERA register.
  2. Ask whether any returns or buy-back are offered; if so, ask what SEC registration covers them, and check the SEC's operator search and scam list.
  3. Have your own lawyer search the parent title and the estate's layout approval.
  4. Insist on a specific plot with a survey plan in your name, and a deed you can register.
  5. Read the refund clause: what you get back, and when, if the company fails to allocate.

For investment-scheme red flags in more depth, read SEC warning signs for diaspora schemes and Ponzi and investment scams in Nigeria.

Why it is marketed to the diaspora

Land banking suits sellers who need buyers they rarely meet. Buyers abroad cannot easily visit, often trust a familiar face at a webinar, and may compare a naira price with a foreign salary and feel it is cheap. None of that makes a scheme bad, but it means the usual protection, seeing the land and the seller in person, is missing. Replace it with paper: a specific plot, a survey in your name, a registrable deed, and your own lawyer's search. If the seller resists any of these, that tells you more than the brochure.

Also be clear about the currency. A naira land price that doubles over several years may still be worth less in pounds or dollars if the naira falls over the same period. Compare in the currency you will eventually spend.

Worked example

Example only: a plan offers a "plot" for ₦6,000,000 paid over 12 months at ₦500,000 a month (12 × ₦500,000 = ₦6,000,000), with a buy-back at ₦9,000,000 after two years. That buy-back is a 50% gain promised by the seller. Ask: who pays the ₦9,000,000, from what money, and what happens if they cannot? If the answer is "new buyers", walk away.

Where Pryme fits

If you do buy, pay each verified instalment directly from a Pryme Personal Account and keep verifiable receipts of every payment. A Naira Savings Box can hold money for land in Nigeria while you finish the checks.

Questions people ask

Is land banking in Nigeria a good investment?

It can be if you own a specific, titled plot and can wait. The risks are title defects, encroachment, slow resale and, with schemes, the promoter failing.

Is land banking regulated by the SEC?

Buying a plot is a land transaction. A scheme that pools money and promises returns may fall under capital market rules; check the SEC's registered operator search and ask a lawyer.

How do I check a Lagos real estate company?

Confirm it on CAC and on the LASRERA register, which the LASRERA Law makes open to public inspection, and have your lawyer search the land title.

What are signs of a land banking scam?

Fixed or very high promised returns, no specific plot or survey in your name, pressure to pay fast, and no clear title to the parent land.
