Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Ditta individuale or SRL: which suits a Nigerian founder?

Sole trader or SRL in Italy: unlimited vs limited liability, formation costs, capital, how profit is taxed and a worked example for a Nigerian founder.

The short answer

A ditta individuale is cheaper and simpler and, under the regime forfettario, often pays less tax at modest profits, but its owner is personally liable for every business debt. An SRL costs more to form and run, yet limits the partners' risk in the ordinary course and lets others own shares. For a low-risk freelance activity the sole trader route usually suits; for trading, imports or staff, an SRL is often safer.

The choice in one paragraph

A ditta individuale (sole trader business) is you, trading under a partita IVA. It is cheap and quick to open and run, and if you qualify for the flat-rate regime the tax paperwork is light. But there is no wall between the business and your personal assets: its debts are your debts. An SRL is a separate company. It costs more to form and run and needs an accountant from day one, but the partners' risk is, in the ordinary course, limited to what they put in, and it is easier to bring in partners or investors. For many Nigerian founders the right answer changes over time: start as a sole trader to test the idea, move to an SRL when the risks or the money grow.

Side by side

Ditta individualeSRL (ordinary or semplificata)
Who owns itYou aloneOne or more partners; in an SRL semplificata, individuals only
LiabilityUnlimited: personal savings and property can be reached by business creditorsLimited to the company's assets, in the ordinary course; personal guarantees change that
FormationPartita IVA declaration, plus Camera di Commercio registration for trades and craftsNotarial deed and registration with the Registro delle imprese
Formation costLowSRL semplificata: no notary fees for the standard deed; ordinary SRL: notary fees (one provider quotes €1,799 including VAT plus about €700 in taxes)
CapitalNone requiredSRL semplificata €1 to €9,999 in cash; ordinary SRL: 25% paid in at incorporation when capital is €10,000 or more
How profit is taxedProfit is your personal income (IRPEF), or a flat substitute tax under the regime forfettario if you qualifyThe company pays corporate income tax (IRES) and regional tax (IRAP); partners are taxed again on dividends they take
BookkeepingSimplified, especially under the regime forfettarioFull company accounts, filed annually
Bringing in a partnerNot possible without changing structureShares can be issued or transferred

The capital and cost points come from iubenda's SRL guide (updated July 2022). Tax rates change and depend on your income, so we do not print them; ask a commercialista to model both options using your expected profit and current rates.

How tax really differs

Tax is where most founders' intuition goes wrong. A sole trader's profit is added to their other income and taxed under IRPEF's progressive bands, unless the flat-rate regime applies, in which case a single substitute tax replaces IRPEF on a deemed profit. An SRL's profit is taxed at company level first; what the partners then take out as dividends is taxed again in their hands, and what they take as directors' pay is taxed as their income and is a cost for the company.

In practice:

  • At low profits, a sole trader under the regime forfettario often pays less overall and spends far less on accountancy. See the regime forfettario with Nigerian clients.
  • At higher profits, an SRL can become efficient if profits are kept in the company for growth rather than all paid out.
  • In both cases, INPS contributions are a major cost, calculated differently for a sole trader and for a working partner or director of an SRL.

A worked example of the liability point

Example only. Tunde runs a small import business in Verona selling Nigerian foodstuffs to shops. A shipment is seized at customs and he cannot pay a supplier the €18,000 he owes.

  • As a ditta individuale, the supplier can pursue Tunde personally. His savings and any property he owns in Italy are exposed.
  • As an SRL with €5,000 of capital, the supplier's claim is against the company. If the company cannot pay, the supplier's losses stop at the company's assets, unless Tunde signed a personal guarantee or mismanaged the company.

For an import business, where a single bad shipment can be expensive, that difference can decide the choice on its own. For a freelance translator or designer with no stock and no staff, the risk is much lower and the sole trader route usually makes more sense.

Points specific to Nigerian founders

  • Permit: both routes are self-employment. Your residence permit must allow it; see converting to a lavoro autonomo permit. A lawfully resident foreigner has the same civil rights as an Italian under article 2(2) of the Testo unico on immigration.
  • Partners in Nigeria: only an SRL lets a relative or business partner in Nigeria own part of the business; a non-resident partner may face a reciprocity check by the notary.
  • Banking: an SRL's bank account is in the company's name, which keeps business and family money apart, useful if you also send money home.
  • Leaving Italy: closing a partita IVA is simple; an SRL has to be wound up or sold, which takes time and cost.

What to check first

  1. How much could you lose if a customer, supplier or shipment goes wrong?
  2. What profit do you expect in year one and year three?
  3. Do you qualify for the regime forfettario? See opening a partita IVA.
  4. Will anyone else own part of the business?
  5. Have you asked a commercialista to compare both, with current rates?

If you choose a company, our guides to the SRL semplificata and starting an SRL take you through the steps.

Where Pryme fits

Whichever structure you choose, keeping business money separate makes tax time easier. A Pryme Business Account holds naira, euros, dollars and pounds, with the rate and fee shown before any conversion. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank; outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Is a ditta individuale or SRL better for a small business in Italy?

For low-risk activities with modest profits, a ditta individuale is usually cheaper and simpler. Where liability is a real risk, or you want partners, an SRL is usually better.

Is my house at risk with a ditta individuale?

Business creditors can pursue your personal assets, because a sole trader has unlimited liability. An SRL limits this in the ordinary course.

Which pays less tax, ditta individuale or SRL?

It depends on profit and on whether you qualify for the regime forfettario. Ask a commercialista to model both with current rates.

Can I switch from ditta individuale to SRL later?

Yes, many founders start as sole traders and form an SRL later. An accountant can advise on transferring the business.
