Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Converting a permit to lavoro autonomo to run a business

How Nigerians in Italy convert a study or other permit to self-employment: the article 6 and 26 rules, quotas, documents, steps and permit length.

The short answer

To run a business in Italy you need a permit that allows self-employment. Under article 6(1) of the Testo unico on immigration, a study or training permit can be converted to a work permit before it expires, outside the annual quotas, if the self-employment requirements of article 26 are certified. Other permits follow their own rules; the Sportello Unico at the Prefettura confirms the route and checklist.

Why the permit has to change

An Italian residence permit is issued for a purpose: study, employment, family, self-employment and so on. If you want to run your own business, as a sole trader with a partita IVA or as a working partner or director of a company, the permit needs to allow self-employment. The process of moving from one purpose to another is called conversione. It is done in Italy, without leaving the country, as long as your current permit is still valid.

The legal framework is the Testo unico on immigration (Legislative Decree 286/1998). We read the version published by Italy's Foreign Ministry, with the text in force at 5 February 2025. Article 26 sets the requirements for self-employment; the conversion routes are spread across several articles; and the procedure is run by the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione at the Prefettura, with the Questura issuing the new card.

The clearest route: from a study permit

Article 6(1) of the Testo unico says a permit issued for study or training can be converted into a permit for work before it expires. For self-employment, the conversion needs the certification that the article 26 requirements are met. The extract we read states that this conversion takes place outside the annual quotas set under article 3(4), which matters because quotas for self-employment entries are limited.

  • Timing: apply before the study permit expires. After expiry, conversion is generally no longer possible.
  • Studies: check with the Sportello Unico whether your course must be completed or a minimum progress reached for your case.
  • The activity: you need a real, defined activity that meets article 26, not just an intention to work freelance.

Other permits

Conversions to self-employment from other permits, such as employment (lavoro subordinato), seasonal work or other purposes, follow their own rules, and some may count against the annual quotas set by the decreto flussi. Some permits may already allow self-employment without any conversion; check what your card and the Questura say. Because the conditions differ by permit type and change with each decreto flussi, ask the Sportello Unico at your Prefettura which route applies to your current card before you apply.

What you will need to show

Requirements are set by article 26 and applied by each Sportello Unico, which publishes its own checklist. Expect to be asked for most of the following, and check the current list locally:

  • Identity and status: passport and current permesso di soggiorno.
  • The activity: a description or business plan, and for a company, the documents showing your role in it.
  • Licences and registrations the activity needs, for example registration with the Camera di Commercio, a SCIA or a sector licence. Regulated professions also need recognition of your qualification; see the dichiarazione di valore guide.
  • Resources: evidence that you have the means to carry on the activity.
  • Accommodation: proof of suitable housing.
  • Documents from Nigeria, if any are needed: authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja and legalised by the Italian Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos, with an Italian translation, as the Italian Embassy describes. NotaiOnline notes that certificates about facts that can change are valid for six months (DPR 445/2000, article 41).

Steps

  1. Confirm the route with the Sportello Unico or a patronato: which conversion applies, whether it is inside or outside the quotas, and the current checklist.
  2. Prepare the activity: decide between a sole trader and a company (see ditta individuale or SRL) and line up any licences.
  3. Get the article 26 certification or the documents the Sportello Unico asks for to prove the requirements.
  4. Submit the conversion request through the channel the Prefettura uses, before your permit expires.
  5. Attend the appointment and then the Questura for fingerprints and the new card. Keep every receipt.
  6. Open the partita IVA or take up the company role at the point your advisers recommend; see opening a partita IVA.

How long the new permit lasts

Under article 5(3-quater), a self-employment permit issued on the basis of Italian consular certification of the article 26 requirements cannot be valid for more than two years at first. Renewals then depend on the activity continuing and on income. Plan for renewal from the start: keep accounts, tax returns and INPS payments in order, because they are the evidence you will need; see permit renewal costs.

Where Pryme fits

Renewal files rely on clean financial records. A Pryme Business Account keeps business money in naira, euros, dollars and pounds apart from personal money, with the rate and fee shown before any conversion. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank; outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners. This article is information, not immigration advice; a patronato or immigration lawyer can review your file.

Questions people ask

Can I convert my study permit to lavoro autonomo in Italy?

Yes. Article 6(1) of the Testo unico allows a study or training permit to be converted to a work permit before it expires, including self-employment with the article 26 certification, outside the annual quotas.

Do I need a quota to convert to lavoro autonomo?

For study permits, the Testo unico text we read places the conversion outside the quotas. Other conversions may be different; ask the Sportello Unico at your Prefettura.

How long is a lavoro autonomo permit valid?

Under article 5(3-quater), a self-employment permit issued on Italian consular certification cannot exceed two years at first.

Do I need a partita IVA before converting my permit?

Practice varies by office. Ask the Sportello Unico when it expects the partita IVA or Camera di Commercio registration in your file.
