Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Credit card from your US bank after six months: what to expect

How US card issuers judge a newcomer with a short credit file, what the ability-to-pay rule requires, and how to prepare before you apply.

The short answer

After six months with a US bank and a secured card or other reported account, you may be offered an unsecured card, but no offer is assured. Federal rules (12 CFR 1026.51) require the issuer to consider your ability to make minimum payments from your income or assets and current obligations before opening a card or raising a limit, and it will also look at your short credit file. Expect a modest first limit that can grow with on-time use.

Six months is a common milestone for Nigerians who arrived, opened a checking account, took a secured card and paid it on time. Friends say "your bank will give you a proper card now". Sometimes it does. Often the first offer is smaller than hoped, or the application is declined, and it helps to know why.

Six months is a habit, not a rule

No law or bureau rule says a card must be offered at six months. The figure comes from experience: by then a secured card or other account has several months of reported payments, enough for many scoring models to say something about you. Each issuer and scoring model has its own thresholds, and some newcomers need nine or twelve months of history before an unsecured offer arrives. Treat six months as the earliest sensible time to ask, not a date you are owed.

What the issuer is legally required to check

The Truth in Lending rules, in 12 CFR 1026.51, say a card issuer must not open a credit card account, or increase a credit limit, unless it considers your ability to make the required minimum payments. That assessment must be based on your income or assets and your current obligations. Applicants under 21 need either independent income or a co-signer aged 21 or over.

So the issuer will ask for income. Report your gross annual US income accurately; money you send to family in Nigeria is not a debt obligation the issuer sees, but do not overstate what you can afford.

What it will also look at

  • Your credit report. After six months you may have one or two accounts reported to the bureaus. The CFPB's research on becoming credit visible found credit cards were the most common first item on a new credit record (37.6% of consumers in its 2017 study).
  • Payment history. The CFPB booklet calls paying on time the factor with the most influence on scores.
  • Balances and use of available credit. The same booklet notes many experts advise keeping balances well under 30% of your limit.
  • Your relationship with the bank. Many banks consider how your checking account has been run, such as regular salary deposits and no overdrafts. This is their own policy, not a legal rule.

What a realistic first offer looks like

For a newcomer with six months of history, expect:

  • A limit set low, reflecting a thin file rather than your income alone.
  • A standard rather than a premium card; rewards and travel cards usually want longer history.
  • Possibly an offer to convert or "graduate" your secured card to unsecured, returning your deposit, if your issuer runs such a programme. Ask.

Any offer is exactly that: an offer. Read the APR, annual fee, late fee and foreign transaction fee in the card agreement before you accept.

Worked example

Example only. Ngozi, a nurse in Dallas, has a $500 secured card and pays it in full every month. She uses about $150 a month, 30% of her limit. At month seven she applies for an unsecured card with her bank and is offered a $1,500 limit, which she accepts. If she keeps spending $150 a month, her use of available credit across both cards falls to $150 of $2,000, or 7.5%. If she carried a $1,000 balance at an example APR of 24%, interest would be roughly $20 a month (24% ÷ 12 = 2% of $1,000), so paying in full each month matters more than the limit.

How to prepare before applying

  1. Check your reports free at AnnualCreditReport.com. The CFPB booklet says you can get one from each of the three nationwide bureaus every 12 months, and Equifax offers six more free reports a year through 31 December 2026. Checking your own report does not lower your score.
  2. Correct any errors, such as a misspelled name or wrong address.
  3. Pay every bill on time for the months before you apply, and keep secured card balances low on the statement date.
  4. Ask your bank whether it reviews secured cards for graduation, and when.
  5. Apply for one card, not several at once; each application is reviewed separately.

If you are declined

Read the decline letter for the reasons the issuer gives. Common reasons for newcomers are insufficient credit history or too few accounts. The CFPB's list of credit-building options includes secured cards, credit-builder loans and retail cards with low limits. Our guides to building US credit from scratch, becoming an authorised user and how long a credit score takes cover the next steps.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not a US card issuer. Where it fits is the cross-border spending a new card is often used for: holding dollars and swapping to naira only when you choose, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. See Swap.

Questions people ask

Can I get an unsecured credit card after six months in the US?

Possibly. The issuer must assess your ability to pay from income or assets and obligations, and will look at your short credit file and how you have run your account. Nothing is assured.

Will my bank upgrade my secured card on its own?

Some issuers review secured cards for conversion to unsecured; others do not. Ask your bank about its policy and timeline.

Does checking my credit report lower my score?

No. The CFPB says requesting your free annual reports will not cause your score to drop.

Why was my credit card application declined with a good income?

Usually because of a thin credit file, not income. The issuer's decline letter gives its reasons; read it before reapplying.
