Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Credit utilisation on a $500 limit: what newcomers miss

Small limits catch newcomers out. On a $500 card a $200 balance is 40% utilisation. How balances are reported and how to keep them low.

The short answer

On a $500 limit, every $5 you leave on the card is 1% utilisation, so a $200 balance is already 40%. myFICO says the statement balance is generally what is reported to the bureaus, even if you pay in full afterwards, so pay most of it before the statement date. The CFPB suggests keeping use under 30%, which is $150 on a $500 card.

Why small limits are tricky

Utilisation is the share of your available revolving credit that you are using. myFICO calls it an important factor; amounts owed as a whole make up 30% of a FICO Score, second only to payment history. On a large limit, normal spending barely registers. On the $300 to $500 limit most newcomers start with, one grocery run and a phone bill can show up as a high percentage.

Balance on a $500 limitUtilisation
$255%
$5010%
$15030%
$25050%
$40080%
$500100%

The mistake: paying in full, but after the statement

This is the point newcomers miss. myFICO says that even if you pay your balance in full each month, the balance may still appear on your report, because the statement balance is generally the amount that is reported. Two dates matter:

Statement closing date
The day the issuer totals your spending and produces the statement. This balance is usually what goes to the bureaus.
Payment due date
Usually a few weeks later. Paying by this date avoids interest and late marks, but the balance has already been reported.

Example only. Kunle has a $500 secured card. He spends $420 during the month and pays the full $420 on the due date, every month. He never pays interest, but each month the bureaus see $420 of $500, or 84%. His friend Sade spends the same, but pays $380 a few days before her statement closes. Her statement shows $40, or 8%, and she pays that on the due date.

How low should it be?

The CFPB's guidance for people building credit is to keep use under 30% of the limit. myFICO adds that a low ratio has a more positive effect than using none of your credit at all, so leaving a card completely unused is not the aim. A small balance that you pay off is.

  • Aim for a statement balance under $150 on a $500 card, and lower if you can.
  • Put one small regular bill on the card, such as a phone plan, and pay it off.
  • Do not let the card show zero for months on end, and do not leave it unused so long that the issuer closes it.

Ways to get more room

  1. Pay mid-cycle. Make a payment before the statement date, as in the example. You can pay more than once a month.
  2. Add to the deposit. Some secured cards let you raise the limit by adding to the deposit.
  3. Ask about graduation. The CFPB notes some secured cards graduate to unsecured cards, often with a higher limit, after a period of on-time payments.
  4. Add a second card later. A second limit lowers overall utilisation, but each application is a hard inquiry; see why your score drops after an inquiry.

Overall and per-card

Once you have more than one card, utilisation is looked at across all your revolving credit, and scoring models can also take account of individual cards. myFICO's page does not split the two, so the safe habit is to keep each card's statement balance low, not just the total. One maxed-out card sitting next to an unused one can still look like stretched credit.

A credit-builder loan or car loan does not count towards utilisation, because it is an instalment account, not revolving credit. That is why a newcomer with only a loan and no card still needs a card to show how they handle a limit.

A routine that works

  • Find your statement closing date in the app and set a reminder three days before.
  • On that reminder, pay the card down to under 10% to 30% of the limit.
  • Set an automatic payment for at least the minimum on the due date, so you are never late.
  • Check your reports at annualcreditreport.com to see what balance is being reported.

For the bigger picture, see building US credit from scratch and secured cards for new immigrants.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not issue US cards. If you send money home each month, Send shows the rate and the fee before you approve, which makes it easier to plan what is left for card payments.

Questions people ask

What is a good credit utilisation on a $500 limit?

The CFPB suggests under 30%, which is $150. Lower is better, but a small balance is better than none at all, according to myFICO.

Does paying in full stop high utilisation showing?

Not always. myFICO says the statement balance is generally reported, even if you pay in full later. Pay before the statement date.

Does utilisation stay on my credit report?

It reflects the latest reported balances, so lowering the next statement balance usually helps quickly.

Should I ask for a higher limit on my secured card?

It can lower utilisation. Ask whether you can add to the deposit or graduate to an unsecured card.
