Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to check if a bank or fintech is licensed by the CBN

A ten-minute check for any Nigerian bank, fintech or loan app: find the legal name, search the CBN, NDIC, FCCPC and SEC lists, and spot fakes.

Part of the guideIs your money safe in a Nigerian fintech?

The short answer

Find the provider's exact legal name and the licensed institution that holds your money, usually in the app's terms or website footer. Then search for that name on the CBN's lists of licensed institutions and the NDIC's list of insured institutions; loan apps should also appear on the FCCPC's approved list, and investment platforms on the SEC's register. If you cannot find the name, or the app will not tell you who holds deposits, do not deposit.

A licence does not guarantee good service, but no licence means no supervision and no deposit insurance. Checking takes about ten minutes. This article is the step-by-step version of the checklist in our guide is your money safe in a Nigerian fintech?, which also explains what each licence type allows.

Apps trade under brand names. Regulators list legal names. You need three things:

  • The company behind the app, with its registration (RC) number. Look in the website footer, the terms and conditions, or the "About" screen in the app.
  • The deposit holder, if the app is not itself a bank. The terms should say something like "accounts are provided by [name] Microfinance Bank Ltd, licensed by the CBN".
  • Any other regulator named, for example the SEC for an investment product or the FCCPC for a lender.

If you cannot find a deposit holder's name after a few minutes of looking, email support and ask. A licensed provider will answer in one line. An evasive reply is your answer.

Step 2: search the right register

What the app doesRegister to checkWhat you are looking for
Holds deposits (bank, MFB, PSB)CBN lists of licensed financial institutions; NDIC list of insured institutionsExact legal name of the deposit holder, and that it is not on a recent revocation list
Runs a wallet you fund (mobile money)CBN list of licensed mobile money operators and payment service providersThe operator's legal name and licence category
Lends moneyFCCPC approved digital lenders listThe app and company name, and whether approval is full, conditional or on a watchlist
Invests your moneySEC register of capital market operators and its fintech portalThe platform's registration, and a named custodian holding your assets

The CBN and NDIC lists

The CBN publishes lists of licensed institutions by category on its website: commercial banks, microfinance banks, payment service banks, mortgage banks, finance companies, mobile money operators and other payment licences. The NDIC publishes its own list of insured institutions, including a separate list of insured microfinance banks, and a tool to verify an insured institution. Search for the deposit holder's exact legal name. You can also dial *959# to query the CBN database from a mobile phone.

Then check the opposite: has that name appeared on a revocation notice? The CBN revoked 46 MFB licences on 1 July 2026 and publishes revocation notices as PDFs. A quick search of the name with "licence revoked" catches most problems.

The FCCPC list for loan apps

Under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission's digital lending rules, every digital lender must be registered. As of January 2026 the FCCPC had authorised more than 400 lenders, grouped as full approval, conditional approval, CBN waiver (apps owned by licensed MFBs) and watchlist, and had blacklisted 45 apps. Use the current list on the FCCPC website, not a screenshot shared on social media.

The SEC register for investments

Under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, only registered entities may solicit funds or give investment advice in Nigeria's capital market. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said in May 2026 that people should check a platform's registration on its official databases before sending money. Our guide to spotting Ponzi and investment scams covers the warning signs.

Step 3: match the licence to the product

A real licence can still be used to dress up a product it does not cover. A payment licence allows a company to move money; it does not allow it to take deposits or promise interest. A microfinance bank licence covers deposits and loans; it does not make a crypto or foreign-exchange trading feature regulated. So once you have found a name on a list, ask a second question: is this licence for the thing I am about to do?

Look at each balance in the app separately. Your everyday account, a savings pot, an investment plan and a loan may each sit with a different entity, under a different regulator, with different protection. Write down which is which. If a provider bundles them together without saying, that is worth a support email before you move a large sum.

A worked example

Funmi sees an advert for a savings app paying 28% a year. She checks it in four moves.

  1. The app's footer gives a company name and RC number, and the terms say deposits are held by "XYZ Microfinance Bank Ltd".
  2. She searches the NDIC list of insured microfinance banks. XYZ MFB is there.
  3. She searches "XYZ Microfinance Bank licence revoked". Nothing.
  4. She reads the product terms. The 28% is earned on an "investment plan" that buys commercial paper, not on the MFB deposit. That part is not NDIC-insured, and the app gives no SEC registration or custodian.

Result: she is comfortable holding everyday money in the deposit account, up to ₦2,000,000, but not the investment plan until she can see an SEC registration and a named custodian. That one check separated the insured part of the product from the uninsured part.

Signs a licence claim is fake

  • A CBN or NDIC logo on the website, but no legal name you can search.
  • A licence number that leads nowhere, or a deposit holder name that does not match any list.
  • "Licensed by CBN" on a product the CBN does not regulate, such as a crypto or forex trading scheme.
  • Requests to pay into a personal account rather than an account in the company's or bank's name.
  • Pressure to deposit before you have time to check.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Financial Ltd is a technology company, not a bank. In Nigeria, Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit per depositor. That is the name to search on the CBN and NDIC lists if you want to run this check on us. Solid Allianze is also the lender behind Spaces credit, which can be spent only with merchants in Pryme's Spaces ecosystem: a limit may be offered based on how your account is run, and the agreement is shown in full and must be accepted before anything is drawn. Pryme Financial provides the technology; the lender is the CBN-licensed microfinance bank. Personal and Business accounts can be opened from any country, which suits people in the diaspora, freelancers and foreign firms; Savings Boxes and credit remain Naira-only. Outside Nigeria, activities are carried out through regulated partners.

The legal entities and their roles are listed on our entities page, and the wider guide to fintech safety in Nigeria covers what to check beyond the licence.

Questions people ask

How do I know if a fintech app is CBN approved?

Find the legal name of the company and the bank that holds deposits in the app's terms, then search for that name on the CBN's lists of licensed institutions and the NDIC's insured list. A brand name alone will not appear.

Is there a USSD code to check if a bank is licensed?

Yes. Dialling *959# lets you query the CBN database from a mobile phone. Confirm the result against the NDIC list of insured institutions.

Where can I see the list of approved loan apps in Nigeria?

On the FCCPC website, under registration of digital money lenders. The list shows full, conditional and waiver approvals and a watchlist; check the current version each time.

Does a CBN licence mean my money is insured?

Only for deposits at a licensed bank, MFB, PSB or mobile money operator. Payment licences that do not take deposits, and investment products, do not carry NDIC cover.

What if a fintech says it is 'in partnership with' a bank?

Ask the bank's exact legal name and check it on the CBN and NDIC lists. Then confirm in the terms that your account and deposits are held by that bank, not just that the two companies work together.
