Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

CBN and crypto: from the 2021 ban to the 2023 guidelines

A dated timeline of the CBN letters on crypto since February 2021, what each one changed for banks and for customers, and where the SEC came in.

The short answer

The CBN letter of 5 February 2021 told banks and other financial institutions to stop dealing with crypto and to close accounts used for it. On 22 December 2023 the CBN replaced that position with Guidelines on Operations of Bank Accounts for Virtual Assets Service Providers (ref. FPR/DIR/PUB/CIR/002/003), which let banks open accounts for SEC-licensed crypto businesses while still barring banks from trading crypto on their own account.

Many Nigerians remember "the crypto ban" but not what it actually said, or what replaced it. The short version is that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) never made owning crypto a crime. It controlled whether banks could touch it. This timeline sets out each step with its date, so you can see what changed for banks and what changed for ordinary customers.

29 Mar 2025President, Investments and Securities Act 2025Repealed ISA 2007; section 357 counts virtual and digital assets as securities under SEC oversight
Apr 2025SEC NigeriaSaid running a digital asset exchange without SEC registration is illegal under ISA 2025

February 2021: what the letter changed

The 5 February 2021 letter was addressed to deposit money banks, non-bank financial institutions and other financial institutions. Its effect, as ICIR and Aelex summarise it, was to exclude crypto from the mainstream financial system: banks and other financial institutions were instructed to close accounts of individuals engaged in crypto transactions.

What it meant for customers

  • Buying crypto on an exchange with a naira bank transfer or card became difficult, because the bank side of the payment was closed off.
  • Trading moved largely to peer-to-peer (P2P) markets, where you pay another person by transfer and the platform holds the crypto in escrow. The bank sees a transfer to an individual, not a crypto purchase.
  • Some customers found their accounts restricted where a bank linked the activity to crypto. We explain that process in can your bank close your account for crypto.
  • Owning crypto was not made an offence by the letter. It was a banking instruction, not a criminal law.

22 December 2023: the guidelines that replaced it

The December 2023 circular, signed by Haruna Mustafa, Director of the Financial Policy and Regulation Department, reversed the account-closure direction and set out how banks should handle Virtual Assets Service Providers (VASPs), meaning crypto exchanges and similar businesses.

What banks may now do

  • Open and operate accounts for VASPs that hold a licence from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC licence is a condition of account opening.
  • Provide settlement accounts so customers can use bank accounts to pay for and receive payments for crypto through those licensed VASPs.
  • Act as a channel for foreign exchange flows linked to VASPs, including capital brought in and repatriated.

What banks still may not do

  • Hold, trade or transact in virtual currencies on their own account. ICIR quotes the circular: banks remain "still prohibited from holding, trading and/or transacting in virtual currencies on their account."
  • Skip anti-money-laundering checks. Banks must run risk management systems against money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing for these accounts.

What changed for an ordinary customer

Before Feb 2021
Banks could process payments to exchanges, subject to their own risk rules.
Feb 2021 to Dec 2023
Banks were told to close accounts used for crypto; P2P trading grew.
From Dec 2023
Banks may serve SEC-licensed VASPs, so paying a licensed exchange through a bank becomes possible again where the bank chooses to offer it.
From Mar 2025
ISA 2025 puts digital assets and VASPs clearly under the SEC, so the licence question moves to the SEC.

In practice, the most useful question today is not "is crypto banned?" but "is this platform registered or admitted by the SEC?" Our guide on whether cryptocurrency is legal in Nigeria covers the current position, and ISA 2025 and digital assets covers the law itself.

What to check first

  1. Find out whether the exchange you use is registered with the SEC or admitted to its incubation programme. Use the SEC's register of operators and its FinPort pages.
  2. Keep your own records of each purchase and sale, with dates and naira values, because the Finance Act 2022 brought digital asset gains into capital gains tax.
  3. Expect your bank to ask about large or frequent transfers to individuals on P2P platforms. Answer in writing and keep copies.
  4. Treat any circular you see quoted on social media with care: check the date and reference number against the CBN's own site.

Common misreadings of the circulars

  • "The CBN banned crypto." The 2021 letter restricted banks and other financial institutions. It did not create a crime of owning crypto, and the CBN does not regulate what you hold in a wallet.
  • "The 2023 guidelines approved crypto." They set conditions for bank accounts of licensed VASPs. Approval of a platform is a matter for the SEC, not the CBN.
  • "Banks must now let me trade crypto." Nothing in the guidelines obliges a bank to offer crypto-related services to a personal customer; each bank decides within its own risk appetite.
  • "The ban came back in 2025." ISA 2025 did not restore the 2021 position. It moved the licensing question firmly to the SEC.

The change in banking rules did not make crypto investment schemes safer. Offers that promise fixed daily or monthly crypto returns are a separate problem, covered in Ponzi and investment scams in Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer crypto buying or selling. If you keep records of transfers linked to any investment, a verifiable statement from a provider such as VerifyDoc.ai can help show a bank or tax office what moved and when; see receipts and statements. Account security settings are on security.

This article is general information on regulation, not legal or tax advice.

Questions people ask

Is crypto still banned by the CBN?

No. The February 2021 letter was replaced by the CBN's guidelines of 22 December 2023, which allow banks to open accounts for SEC-licensed crypto businesses. Banks are still not allowed to trade crypto for themselves.

What was the CBN circular of 5 February 2021?

A letter to banks and other financial institutions that excluded crypto from the regulated banking system and directed them to close accounts used for crypto transactions.

What is the reference of the CBN December 2023 crypto circular?

FPR/DIR/PUB/CIR/002/003, dated 22 December 2023, titled Guidelines on Operations of Bank Accounts for Virtual Assets Service Providers.

Can my bank still restrict my account over crypto?

Yes. Banks keep their own risk and anti-money-laundering duties, so they can ask questions or restrict an account where activity looks unusual, even after the 2023 change.
