Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Can your bank close your account for crypto? The rules

How the CBN, the SEC and your bank's own terms affect crypto-linked accounts, what a PND restriction means, and how to respond calmly.

The short answer

Yes, a Nigerian bank can restrict or close an account it links to crypto activity, because the CBN told banks in 2021 not to process crypto transactions and banks also act on their own risk and anti-fraud rules. The usual first step is a Post No Debit (PND) restriction rather than closure; your response is to ask the bank for the reason in writing, supply the documents it asks for and escalate through its complaints process if needed.

The rules in layers

Three sets of rules meet when crypto touches a Nigerian bank account.

1. The CBN and banks

In 2021 the Central Bank of Nigeria barred banks from processing crypto transactions, as TechCabal's 2025 summary of the law records. What followed is covered in our guide to the CBN and crypto from the 2021 ban to the 2023 guidelines. Before relying on any summary, including ours, read the current circular on the CBN's own website, because it is the circular, not a news report, that your bank follows.

2. The SEC and crypto firms

The Investments and Securities Act 2025, signed on 25 March 2025, treats digital assets, including cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, as securities and gives the SEC oversight of crypto operators. The SEC runs an Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP) for virtual asset service providers, which gives conditional approval-in-principle before full registration. A platform's SEC status matters to banks deciding whether a payment is acceptable.

3. Your bank's own terms and risk rules

Separately from any crypto rule, banks restrict accounts for compliance reasons. Moniepoint's support pages, for example, list causes of a PND that include KYC or BVN flags, suspicious or fraudulent inflows, pending compliance reviews and instructions from a regulator, court or the EFCC. Read your own bank's account terms for its clauses on restriction and closure.

What a PND actually does

A Post No Debit restriction blocks money going out (transfers, withdrawals, card payments, bills) while normally still allowing money in. It is how most restrictions start. A CBN directive reported in December 2023 also made PND the consequence for accounts without a BVN or NIN, so not every restriction is about crypto.

StatusWhat it meansTypical next step
PNDYou cannot send or withdraw; deposits may still arriveBank asks for documents or explanation
Lien on a sumA specific amount is held, often after a disputed or reported paymentInvestigation of that payment
ClosureThe bank ends the relationshipBank should arrange release of any balance

Common triggers linked to crypto

  • Many incoming transfers from unrelated people, which is how peer-to-peer (P2P) trading often looks.
  • A transfer later reported as fraud by the sender, which can happen when a P2P buyer pays with stolen funds.
  • Narrations or references naming crypto platforms.
  • Volumes far above what your stated income or account tier suggests.

The fraud risk in P2P trading is real: if a counterparty pays you with money taken from a scam victim, your account can be restricted even though you did nothing dishonest. Our guide to P2P crypto trading risks explains how this happens.

How to respond, step by step

  1. Check your app, email and SMS for a notice and reason.
  2. Contact the bank and ask, politely and in writing, why the account is restricted and what it needs from you.
  3. Supply what is asked: ID, BVN/NIN details, an explanation of inflows, proof of source of funds (payslips, invoices, platform trade history).
  4. Keep copies and a reference number for every contact.
  5. If there is no resolution, use the bank's formal complaints channel, then the CBN's consumer protection route.

If the bank decides to close the account

Closure is a commercial decision a bank can make under its account terms, and it does not need to be about crypto. If it happens:

  • Ask in writing how and when the remaining balance will be released, and to which account.
  • Ask whether any amount is held because of a specific disputed payment, and for the reference.
  • Request a final statement for your records; you may need it for tax or for a new bank's questions.
  • Check whether a restriction has been recorded against your BVN, as that can affect accounts elsewhere. Ask the bank directly whether anything has been reported.

If the bank's answer is unclear or slow, keep the written trail. A complaint with dates, reference numbers and copies of what you supplied is far easier for the bank, or later the regulator, to act on than a phone call.

Reducing the risk

On the wider legal question, see is cryptocurrency legal in Nigeria?

  • Use platforms whose SEC status you have checked. See SEC-licensed crypto exchanges.
  • Keep crypto activity in line with your account tier and stated income.
  • Keep records of every trade and counterparty.
  • Avoid accepting payments from third parties you cannot identify.

Offers of guaranteed crypto profits are a separate risk; see how to spot investment scams.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer crypto. If your account is restricted elsewhere, keep your everyday money and bills separate so one restriction does not stop rent or school fees. A Pryme account can hold NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, with authenticator-app security and a transaction PIN.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian bank close my account for buying crypto?

Banks can restrict or close accounts they judge to be high risk, and the CBN told banks in 2021 not to process crypto transactions. Read the current CBN position and your bank's terms.

What does PND mean on my account?

Post No Debit: you cannot send or withdraw money, though deposits may still come in. It is usually lifted once the bank's questions are answered.

My account was restricted after P2P trading. What should I do?

Ask the bank for the reason in writing, provide ID and evidence of the trades and source of funds, and use the complaints process if it is not resolved.

Is crypto legal in Nigeria now?

The Investments and Securities Act 2025 treats digital assets as securities under SEC oversight. See our guide to whether crypto is legal in Nigeria for detail.
