Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

P2P crypto trading in Nigeria: how it works and the risks

How P2P escrow works, why naira payments from strangers get bank accounts restricted, the common frauds and where the law stands in 2026.

The short answer

In peer-to-peer (P2P) crypto trading, a platform locks the seller's crypto in escrow while the buyer pays naira directly into the seller's bank account; the crypto is released once the seller confirms the money has arrived. The main risks sit on the naira side: payments from third parties or stolen funds can lead to your bank account being restricted, and fake payment alerts trick sellers into releasing crypto. The CBN's December 2023 guidelines let banks serve SEC-licensed crypto firms, but banks still may not trade crypto themselves.

How a P2P trade works

A P2P marketplace matches people who want to buy crypto, usually a stablecoin such as USDT, with people who want to sell it. The platform does not handle the naira. It holds the crypto and acts as referee.

  1. The seller posts an offer: price per unit, minimum and maximum order, accepted payment methods and time limit.
  2. A buyer opens an order. The platform moves the seller's crypto into escrow, so the seller cannot spend it elsewhere during the trade.
  3. The buyer pays naira by bank transfer to the seller's account, using the name and account number shown in the order, then marks the order as paid.
  4. The seller checks the bank account, not a screenshot or SMS, and releases the crypto.
  5. If something goes wrong, either side opens an appeal and the platform's support team reviews evidence before deciding who gets the escrowed crypto.

Escrow protects the buyer against a seller who takes the naira and disappears, and protects the seller against a buyer who never pays. It does not protect anyone against what happens inside the banking system after the transfer.

Why bank accounts get restricted

To a bank, a P2P seller's account looks like many unrelated people sending money in, often at odd hours, followed by the balance moving out. That pattern can trigger the bank's fraud and anti-money-laundering checks. The usual first step is a Post No Debit (PND) restriction, which blocks money going out.

  • Stolen funds: a scammer tricks a victim into sending money to your account to "buy" crypto. You release the crypto; the victim reports the transfer; your bank freezes the amount or the account.
  • Third-party payments: the payment arrives from a name that does not match the buyer's verified name on the platform.
  • Volume above your profile: large inflows on an account opened for modest personal use.
  • Narrations naming crypto: references that describe the transfer as a crypto purchase.

Being innocent does not stop the restriction; you will usually need to explain each disputed transfer with evidence. Our guide on whether a bank can close your account for crypto explains what to do if it happens.

Common fraud patterns

PatternHow it worksDefence
Fake payment alertBuyer sends a forged SMS, email or screenshot of a transferRelease only after you see the money in your banking app
Third-party paymentMoney comes from someone other than the buyer, often a scam victimReject payments where the sender's name does not match the buyer
Chargeback or reversalBuyer pays, then reports the transfer as fraud to the bankTrade with established counterparties; keep all records
Off-platform requestBuyer or seller asks to finish the deal on WhatsApp or TelegramNever leave the platform; escrow and appeals only work inside it
Fake support agentSomeone posing as platform support asks for your login or codesSupport never needs your password or authenticator codes

Where the law stands

Three rules overlap, and none of them is a simple yes or no for individuals.

  • The SEC: the Investments and Securities Act 2025 treats digital assets, including cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, as securities and gives the SEC oversight of platforms that offer them, as TechCabal's May 2025 summary records. Platforms are expected to be registered or in the SEC's incubation programme.
  • The CBN: its December 2023 guidelines, reported by Nairametrics, ended the 2021 restriction on banks operating accounts for crypto businesses. Banks may now open designated accounts for virtual asset service providers holding a valid SEC licence, but banks remain prohibited from holding or trading crypto on their own account.
  • Your bank's terms: the guidelines deal with accounts for licensed firms. They do not give individuals a right to run high-volume trading through a personal account, and banks still apply their own risk rules.

For the background, see the CBN and crypto from the 2021 ban to the 2023 guidelines and which crypto exchanges are SEC-licensed. Profits from trading are also taxable under the 2025 tax laws; see tax on crypto gains.

Worked example: the cost of a frozen account

Example. You sell crypto to five buyers in a day for ₦300,000 each, ₦1.5m in total. One payment of ₦300,000 turns out to be from a scam victim. The bank places a lien on ₦300,000 and a PND on the account while it investigates. Your profit margin on the day's trades was, say, 1%, or ₦15,000. A single bad payment wipes out twenty days of that margin, and the PND can block your salary and bills until it is lifted.

What to check first

  1. Use a platform that shows its SEC status, and check it yourself on the SEC website.
  2. Trade only with verified counterparties whose bank name matches their platform name.
  3. Confirm every payment in your banking app before releasing crypto.
  4. Keep separate records of each trade: order number, counterparty, amount, time, bank reference.
  5. Do not use the account your salary and bills depend on.

Where Pryme fits

Many people use P2P to hold dollars. A Pryme multicurrency account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each, and money stays in the currency it arrived in until you choose to Swap, with the rate shown first and the fee on its own line. Outside Nigeria, financial activities are carried out through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Is P2P crypto trading legal in Nigeria?

None of the rules we checked bans individuals from buying or selling crypto. The SEC regulates crypto platforms under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, and the CBN's December 2023 guidelines let banks serve SEC-licensed crypto firms. Banks can still restrict accounts that look like they carry fraud risk.

Why was my account frozen after a P2P trade?

Usually because a payment into your account was reported as fraud, came from a third party, or the volume did not match your profile. Ask the bank for the reason in writing and provide your trade records.

How do I avoid scams on P2P?

Release crypto only after the money shows in your banking app, reject payments from names that do not match the buyer, and never move a trade off the platform.

Is P2P escrow safe?

Escrow protects against a counterparty who does not pay or deliver within the platform. It cannot reverse a bank transfer or stop a bank restricting your account over a disputed payment.
