Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Mechanic workshop start-up cost: tools, space and pricing

Mechanic workshop start-up cost in Nigeria: a costed tool list with and without a lift, choosing space, pricing labour and building trust.

The short answer

A small mechanic workshop needs a diagnostic scanner, hand tools, jacks, a hoist and a compressor; in our labelled example that costs ₦1.21 million, or ₦3.71 million with a two-post lift. Mechanics charge labour per job and list parts separately.

What a small workshop does

A mechanic workshop services and repairs cars: oil changes, brakes, suspension, engine and gearbox work, electrical faults and computer diagnosis. In Nigeria many mechanics work in open yards or clusters of workshops, often called mechanic villages, while others rent a covered garage in a busy area. Newer cars rely more on electronics, so a diagnostic scanner and the skill to read it now matter as much as spanners.

Training and specialising

Most mechanics learn by apprenticeship with a master mechanic for several years. Technical colleges and some vocational centres teach motor vehicle mechanics, and dealer training covers specific brands. Specialising helps you stand out: one brand or group of brands, gearboxes, air conditioning, auto electrics, or diagnosis. Customers pay more for a mechanic who fixes the fault the first time.

Tools and equipment (example)

Example only. Prices vary by brand and whether new or used, and imported tools move with the exchange rate.

Tool (example)Amount
OBD2 diagnostic scanner₦150,000
Socket and spanner sets₦150,000
Hydraulic floor jack and four axle stands₦120,000
Engine hoist or chain block₦250,000
Air compressor and impact wrench₦350,000
Battery tester and charger₦60,000
Workbench and vice₦100,000
Oil drain pans, funnels and containers₦30,000
Two-post car lift (optional)₦2,500,000
Total₦3,710,000

Without the lift, the list comes to ₦1,210,000. Many workshops start with jacks, stands and a pit or ramp, and add a lift later. If you buy a lift, it must be installed on a solid concrete floor by someone who knows how; a falling car can kill. A compressor and impact tools run on power, so price your generator or grid supply too. NERC's AEDC order effective 1 July 2025 set Band A at ₦209.50 per kWh; check your DisCo's current rate.

Space: what to look for

  • Room to park cars waiting for parts without blocking the road or neighbours.
  • A covered area for rainy-season work and electrical jobs.
  • Security at night for customers' cars.
  • Access to a parts market nearby, or reliable parts sellers who deliver.
  • A landlord who agrees in writing that the space can be used as a workshop.

Dispose of used oil, filters and old batteries through collectors rather than drains or open ground. Ask your state environmental agency what applies in your area.

Pricing services

Charge labour per job, and quote parts on a separate line. Customers often bring their own parts; if they do, make clear you are not responsible for the quality of those parts.

Job (example)Labour (example)
Oil and filter service₦10,000
Front brake pads₦15,000
Computer diagnosis scan₦10,000
Engine overhaul₦150,000
Gearbox workQuoted after inspection

A month's numbers (example)

Example only. 50 services at ₦10,000 (₦500,000), 20 brake jobs at ₦15,000 (₦300,000), 30 scans at ₦10,000 (₦300,000) and 2 overhauls at ₦150,000 (₦300,000) bring ₦1,400,000 in labour. Costs: yard rent ₦150,000, three assistants ₦300,000, power and fuel ₦150,000, consumables ₦80,000 and scanner updates ₦20,000, a total of ₦700,000. That leaves ₦700,000 before any margin on parts.

Building trust with customers

Car owners worry about being overcharged and about parts being swapped. A workshop that addresses those worries wins repeat customers:

  • Show the scan result or the worn part before replacing it.
  • Give a written estimate and call before going over it.
  • Return old parts if the customer asks.
  • Keep a record of each car's work and mileage.
  • Offer a short warranty on your labour.

Fleet contracts with companies, ride-hailing drivers and schools give steady work; price them monthly. For related trades, see tyre vulcanizer costs and generator repair. Our guide on repeat customers covers keeping regulars.

Diagnosis as a service

Many drivers now arrive with a warning light on the dashboard and no idea of the cause. A scan, a short road test and a clear written explanation is a service in its own right, and charging for it separately stops customers using you for free diagnosis and buying the repair elsewhere. Keep the scanner's software updated, because newer models need current data, and learn to read live data rather than only error codes; a code points to a system, not always the faulty part.

Keep a parts log too: which supplier, which brand, and whether the part failed early.

What to check first

  1. Choose your speciality and the brands you know best.
  2. Price the core tools, then decide whether a lift is needed now.
  3. Find space with parking, cover and security, and get the landlord's written consent.
  4. Set your labour price list.
  5. Register a business name for fleet clients; the CAC fee schedule dated 29 May 2025 lists ₦20,000 plus ₦1,000 for name reservation.

Where Pryme fits

Fleet clients pay by transfer and expect invoices. A Pryme Business Account gives you account details, and invoicing lets you bill each car or each month.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to start a mechanic workshop in Nigeria?

In our labelled example, core tools came to ₦1,210,000, or ₦3,710,000 with a two-post lift. Add rent, power and working money.

Do I need a car lift to open a workshop?

Not at the start. Many workshops use jacks, stands and a pit or ramp. If you buy a lift, it needs a solid concrete floor and proper installation.

How much do mechanics charge for servicing in Nigeria?

Charges vary by city and car. In our example, an oil and filter service is ₦10,000 for labour, with parts charged separately.

How do mechanics make money?

Mainly from labour, plus a margin on parts they supply, and from fleet contracts with companies and drivers.
