Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to get repeat customers for a small business in Nigeria

Repeat customers cost less to win than new ones. Practical ways Nigerian shops, eateries, salons and pharmacies turn a first visit into a habit.

The short answer

Repeat customers come back when the first visit was easy, the item they wanted was in stock, they felt recognised and they have a simple reason to return. Keep regulars' usual items in stock, remember them, follow up only with their consent, make paying easy and fix complaints quickly.

Why repeat customers matter most

Every new customer costs something to win: a sign, an advert, a discount, a referral reward, or simply the time it takes to persuade them. A returning customer costs far less. If a customer who spends ₦8,000 a visit comes twice a month for a year, that is ₦192,000 of sales from one relationship. Example only. Keep that kind of number in mind when you decide how much effort a regular deserves.

For the cost side of winning new customers, see Customer acquisition cost.

Get the first visit right

Most customers decide whether to return during the first visit. Four things matter:

  1. They found what they came for. Running out of a popular item is the fastest way to lose a new customer.
  2. The price was what they expected. The FCCPC states that displayed prices must match the price at payment (section 115, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act). A surprise at the till ends trust.
  3. Paying was easy. Accept transfers and cards so no one leaves because they lack cash, and make sure the transfer confirms before the customer walks away.
  4. Someone was pleasant to them. A greeting, a name, a thank-you. It costs nothing.

Recognise people

Recognition is the small business's advantage over a chain. Learn names. Note usual orders. In a salon, note the style and products a client prefers; in a pharmacy, when a repeat prescription is due; in a restaurant, the table a family likes. A notebook works. A spreadsheet works better once you have more than fifty regulars.

Follow up properly

WhatsApp is the most common way Nigerian businesses keep in touch, but it needs care. Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, silence or inactivity is not consent (section 26), the customer must be told they can withdraw consent, withdrawing must be as easy as giving it (section 35), and a person can object to direct marketing at any time, after which you must stop (section 36). Ask at the till, record the yes, and include an easy way to opt out in every message. See Can you send WhatsApp promos to customers?

Handle complaints as a chance to keep someone

A customer who complains is telling you they would like to come back if you fix it. Listen, apologise once, fix the problem and record what happened. The FCCPA, as summarised by the FCCPC, gives consumers rights to return goods in good condition within a reasonable time (section 122) and to goods that are reasonably suitable for their purpose (section 131). A returns policy that respects those rights, explained clearly, keeps customers. For disputes over payments themselves, see Chargebacks and reversals in Nigeria.

Measure your return rate

You cannot improve what you do not count. Once a month, work out your return rate: of the customers who visited for the first time last month, how many came back this month? A notebook tally is enough to start. Track it alongside total sales and average basket.

  • If the return rate is falling, look first at stock-outs and waiting times.
  • If it is rising, find out what changed and do more of it.
  • If one staff member's customers return more often than others', ask them what they do and teach it.

Write down any change you make, such as a new reminder or a delivery offer, so you can link it to the numbers a month later.

A worked example

Example only. Bisi runs a salon. She starts noting each client's last visit and usual service. Clients who opt in get a short reminder five weeks after a braid or relaxer appointment. After three months, she counts that 60 of her 140 clients booked a return visit within six weeks, compared with about 40 in the three months before. She spends nothing on adverts; the gain comes from remembering people and asking at the right time.

Where Pryme fits

If your business is in a supported sector, joining Spaces through a Pryme Business Account gives customers with Loans on Spaces, credit from Solid Allianze MFB that can only be spent inside the network, a reason to come back to you rather than a business outside it. The Customer Support agent can prepare replies and reminders for a person to approve. See What is Spaces?

Questions people ask

How do I make customers come back to my shop?

Keep their usual items in stock, recognise them, make paying easy, follow up only with consent and fix complaints quickly.

Is it legal to save customers' phone numbers for promotions?

Yes, with their clear consent and for a stated purpose. The NDPA says silence is not consent and people can object to direct marketing at any time.

What loyalty programme works for a small business?

A simple thank-you after a set number of visits, honoured every time, often works better than a complex points scheme.

How do I handle an angry customer?

Listen, apologise once, fix the problem and record it. Respect return rights set out in the FCCPA.
