Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Spaces for business

How small businesses compete with big chains in Nigeria

Big chains win on scale. Small Nigerian businesses win on closeness, speed, relationships and flexibility. How to pick your ground and hold it.

The short answer

Small businesses rarely beat big chains on price across the board, so compete where size is a disadvantage for them: being closer, opening at the right hours, knowing customers personally, specialising, and offering flexible service and payment. Choose two or three of these and do them every day.

Why chains win, and where they struggle

Large chains buy in bulk, advertise widely and can absorb thin margins. Those are hard advantages to match. But scale brings weaknesses: fixed opening hours, standard ranges, staff who rotate, and decisions made far from the branch. A small owner on the spot can move faster than any head office.

Most Nigerian businesses are small. The NBS and SMEDAN national MSME survey counted over 37 million micro, small and medium enterprises, the vast majority of them micro businesses, and SMEDAN reports that MSMEs accounted for over 76% of employment in the last national survey. Small does not mean marginal; it means you need to pick your ground.

Five places small businesses can win

1. Closeness

A shop at the estate gate beats a supermarket twenty minutes away for daily needs. Lean into it: stock what people run out of, and offer delivery within walking distance.

2. Hours that fit the street

Chains open and close by policy. You can open early for commuters or late for workers coming home. A pharmacy open when the chain is shut becomes the one people remember.

3. Knowing your customers

Remembering names, usual orders and preferences is something a chain cannot do well at scale. Keep a simple notebook or a spreadsheet of regulars and what they buy.

4. Specialising

Do not try to stock everything. A provisions shop known for the best selection of local spices, a salon known for one style done perfectly, a restaurant known for one dish, each gives customers a reason to choose you over a bigger name.

5. Flexibility

You can split a carton, hold an item till payday, deliver to a neighbour or accept a payment method a chain has not yet set up. Flexibility is service, and service is the small business's strongest tool.

Where not to fight

BattleWhy it is hard for a small businessBetter response
Lowest price on everythingChains buy at volumes you cannot matchPrice-match a few signal items, compete on service elsewhere
Mass advertisingCosts too much per customer reachedLocal signage, referrals, opt-in WhatsApp lists
Widest rangeTies up cash in slow stockSpecialise and order to demand
Big loyalty schemesExpensive to runPersonal recognition and simple thank-yous

Pricing clearly and confidently

You do not have to be cheapest, but your prices must be clear. The FCCPC states that under section 115 of the FCCPA, displayed prices must match what is charged at payment, and in 2024 it temporarily sealed an Abuja store over shelf and checkout prices that did not match. Clear pricing is also a competitive advantage: customers who trust your tags do not need to check the chain's.

Formalise to look as solid as the chain

The NBS and SMEDAN survey found that about 96% of micro enterprises were unregistered and around 70% had no business plan. Registration, a business account, proper receipts and clean records cost little and make you look as dependable as a larger rival. They also open doors to payment tools and networks that informal businesses cannot use. For ideas on getting paid properly, see How to get paid in Nigeria and POS terminal vs bank transfer.

A weekly routine that keeps you ahead

  1. Monday: check stock of your top twenty items and reorder before you run out.
  2. Wednesday: walk past the nearest chain and note any price or range changes on your signal items.
  3. Friday: message opt-in customers about new stock or weekend offers.
  4. Saturday: speak to at least five regulars and ask what they could not find with you this week.
  5. Sunday: look at the week's sales, average basket and visitor count, and pick one thing to improve.

None of this is expensive. Done every week, it builds the kind of local knowledge a chain branch rarely has.

A worked example

Example only. Chinedu runs a pharmacy two streets from a chain outlet. He cannot match the chain's prices on every product, so he picks his ground: he opens until 10pm, keeps a record of regular customers' repeat prescriptions so he can have them ready, and offers delivery within his estate. He keeps prices on ten common items in line with the chain and makes sure his tags match his till. Over a quarter, his evening sales grow and repeat customers rise, while his margin on the rest of his range holds.

Where Pryme fits

Payment flexibility is one area where a small business can match or beat a chain. If you are in a supported sector, joining Spaces through a Pryme Business Account means customers with Loans on Spaces, which can only be spent with Spaces merchants, can pay you from that credit. If a nearby chain is not in Spaces, that credit does not work there. Read What is Spaces? and ask Pryme about terms via the contact page.

Questions people ask

Can a small shop compete with big supermarket chains?

Yes, by competing on closeness, hours, personal service and specialisation rather than price across the board.

Should I lower my prices to match big stores?

Match a few items customers use to compare, and compete on service elsewhere. Cutting every price usually costs more than it brings in.

Does registering my business help me compete?

It helps you look dependable, issue proper receipts and use payment tools informal businesses cannot. The NBS found most micro businesses are unregistered.

How do small businesses advertise cheaply in Nigeria?

Clear signage, accurate online listings, referrals from neighbouring businesses and opt-in WhatsApp lists cost little per customer reached.
