Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Generator repair business: tools, training and pricing

How to start a generator repair business in Nigeria: training, a tool kit costed as an example, sourcing parts and pricing common jobs.

The short answer

A generator repair business in Nigeria usually starts with apprenticeship training and a basic tool kit; in our labelled example the kit costs about ₦277,000. Repairers charge labour per job and parts separately, and demand is steadiest where grid supply is weakest.

Why generator repair has steady work

Most Nigerian homes, shops and offices run a generator for some part of the week, and every one of them needs servicing, new plugs, carburettor cleaning and, sooner or later, a proper repair. Grid supply decides how hard those machines work. NERC's band system shows the gap: under the AEDC order effective 1 July 2025, feeders are classed by minimum daily supply, from 20 hours for Band A down to 16 hours (B), 12 (C), 8 (D) and 4 (E). A shop on a Band D or E feeder may run a generator for most of the working day, and that is where repair work is most regular.

Demand moves with fuel prices, the weather and the calendar. Expect a rush when supply drops, before festive seasons when people service machines for travel and events, and in the rainy season when water gets into fuel and electrics. Quiet weeks come when supply is good for a stretch.

Training: where repairers learn

Most generator repairers in Nigeria learn through apprenticeship with an established technician, usually for a year or more, before working alone. Some add a short course at a technical college or vocational centre on small engines or electrical installation. There is no single national licence for small-generator repair, so customers judge you by results and referrals.

  • Small petrol sets (the common 'I better pass my neighbour' class): carburettor, ignition coil, plug, recoil starter, AVR (automatic voltage regulator).
  • Larger petrol and diesel sets: injectors, fuel pump, governor, cooling, alternator windings.
  • Electrics: AVR, brushes, rewinding, change-over switches and safe connection to a building.
  • Customer work: diagnosing fast, explaining the fault plainly and quoting before you start.

If you plan to connect generators to buildings or install change-over switches, learn proper electrical practice. A wrong connection can feed power back into the grid line and injure line workers.

Tools and start-up cost (example)

Example only. Prices vary by city, brand and whether you buy new or used; get at least two quotes for each item.

Tool (example)Amount
Spanner and socket set (metric)₦45,000
Screwdrivers, pliers, feeler gauges₦20,000
Digital multimeter₦15,000
Spark plug tester and compression gauge₦25,000
Soldering iron and wire stock₦12,000
Battery charger₦30,000
Work bench, vice and trays₦60,000
Small air compressor or blower₦70,000
Total₦277,000

Add a small shop or shed, a fire extinguisher, and a few weeks of working money for parts you buy before customers pay. Many technicians start from a roadside spot or by going to customers' homes, and rent a shop once they have a steady list of regulars.

Parts: sourcing without getting stuck

Parts are where repairers either build a reputation or lose it. Plugs, carburettors, AVRs, coils, filters and recoil starters for popular brands are sold in big spare-parts markets in most cities. Quality varies a great deal between copies.

  • Keep two or three trusted parts sellers and compare prices regularly.
  • Show the customer the old part and give it back if they want it.
  • Quote parts and labour on separate lines so the customer sees what is what.
  • Do not stock slow-moving parts; buy them when a job needs them and the customer has paid a deposit.

How to price generator jobs

Price labour by the job, not by the hour, because that is how customers think. Parts are charged at what you paid plus a reasonable handling margin, or the customer buys them. Labour depends on the size of the machine and how long the job takes you.

Job (example)Labour charge (example)
Routine service, small petrol set (oil, plug, air filter, carburettor clean)₦7,000
AVR replacement, small petrol set₦8,000 plus part
Recoil starter repair₦5,000 plus part
Major repair or top overhaul, small set₦20,000 plus parts
Diesel set serviceQuote after inspection

A month's numbers (example)

Example only. 40 routine services at ₦7,000 (₦280,000) and 8 major repairs at ₦20,000 (₦160,000) bring ₦440,000 in labour. Costs: shop rent ₦50,000, two apprentices at ₦40,000 each (₦80,000), transport and fuel for test runs ₦40,000, consumables such as rags, cleaner and small fittings ₦30,000, a total of ₦200,000. That leaves ₦240,000 before any margin on parts. The same shop in a quiet month might do half the work, so keep a buffer.

Getting customers

  • Offer service contracts to shops, churches, schools and offices: a fixed monthly visit at an agreed price.
  • Answer calls quickly; a dead generator is urgent for a business.
  • Keep a simple job book with the customer, machine, fault, parts and price, so repeat visits are faster.
  • Ask happy customers to send you to neighbours; most repair work comes by word of mouth.

Our guide to getting repeat customers covers simple ways to keep regulars coming back. If you want to move into solar later, see starting a solar installation business.

What to check first

  1. Find a technician to train under, or prove your skills on friends' machines first.
  2. Price your tools from at least two sellers.
  3. Pick a spot close to shops and estates that run generators daily.
  4. Register a business name if you plan to sign service contracts; the CAC fee schedule dated 29 May 2025 lists ₦20,000 for business name registration plus ₦1,000 for name reservation.
  5. Decide your labour prices and write them down so you quote the same way every time.

Where Pryme fits

Contract customers usually pay by transfer. A Pryme Business Account gives you account details to receive those payments and keep job income apart from personal money, and invoicing helps you bill service contracts each month.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to start a generator repair business in Nigeria?

In our labelled example, a basic tool kit came to ₦277,000. Add a shop or shed, a fire extinguisher and working money for parts. Used tools can lower the cost.

How long does it take to learn generator repair?

Most repairers learn by apprenticeship with an established technician, often for a year or more, before working alone. A short vocational course can add electrical basics.

How much do generator repairers charge for servicing?

Charges vary by city and machine size. In our example, a routine service on a small petrol set is ₦7,000 for labour, with parts charged separately.

Is generator repair a profitable business in Nigeria?

It can be, because most homes and shops rely on generators. Our example month left ₦240,000 after costs, but quiet months happen when grid supply improves.
