Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Make money

Car hire (rental) business: cars, insurance and daily rates

Starting a car rental business in Nigeria: fleet cost, comprehensive insurance, drivers, daily rates and a labelled three-car monthly example.

The short answer

A car hire business makes money when its cars are rented on enough days to cover insurance, maintenance, drivers and the fall in each car's value. NAICOM requires comprehensive insurance to cost at least 5% of the sum insured (rule effective January 2023), which is a large fixed cost per car. In our labelled example, three cars rented 15 days a month at ₦50,000 a day leave about ₦605,000 a month after depreciation.

What a car hire business sells

Car hire in Nigerian cities covers several different services, and each is priced differently. Chauffeur-driven hire, where your driver comes with the car, is the most common for business visitors, weddings, events and airport runs. Self-drive hire, where the customer drives, is less common because of the risk of damage, theft and traffic offences, and operators who offer it usually demand a large deposit and strong identification. Long-term hire to companies, by the month or the year, gives steady income at a lower daily rate.

Decide which of these you are offering before you buy cars, because it changes the vehicles, the insurance and the paperwork you need.

Building the fleet

Most new operators start with one to three cars, often a mix of a reliable saloon for everyday hire and an SUV for clients who want more space or status. Buy for reliability and cheap parts, not looks: a car that sits in the workshop earns nothing. Keep a record of each car's purchase price, mileage and service history from day one, because that record is what lets you price daily rates properly and later sell the car at a fair price.

  • Choose models with parts available in your city.
  • Fit a tracker to each car, and agree in the hire terms that it may be used.
  • Check every car's papers and plates are genuine and in the business's name.
  • Keep one car, or one agreement with another operator, as a backup for breakdowns.

Insurance and papers

Insurance is the cost new operators underestimate most. NAICOM's circular effective 1 January 2023 set the minimum comprehensive premium at 5% of the sum insured after rebates and discounts, and third-party cover for private cars at ₦15,000. For a car insured at ₦15,000,000, comprehensive cover would therefore cost at least ₦750,000 a year. Ask the insurer to confirm in writing that hire and reward is covered; a private policy may not be valid when the car is rented out.

Your drivers need the right licence. The FRSC portal says commercial driving needs a medical certificate, and private licences can be upgraded to the commercial class. Plates and vehicle papers must be current; the circular effective 1 November 2024 set standard plates at a minimum of ₦30,000.

A worked monthly example

Example only; every figure is an assumption. Three cars worth ₦15,000,000 each, rented with a driver on 15 days a month at ₦50,000 a day. The customer pays for fuel.

LinePer month (example)
Rental income: 3 cars × 15 days × ₦50,000₦2,250,000
Drivers: 45 driver-days × ₦10,000−₦450,000
Comprehensive insurance: 3 × ₦750,000 ÷ 12−₦187,500
Maintenance: 3 × ₦100,000−₦300,000
Tracking: 3 × ₦15,000−₦45,000
Marketing, phone and admin−₦100,000
Left before depreciation₦1,167,500
Depreciation: 15% a year on ₦45,000,000 ÷ 12−₦562,500
Left after depreciation₦605,000

The figure that matters most is days rented. At 10 days per car instead of 15, income falls by ₦750,000 and driver costs by only ₦150,000, while insurance, tracking and depreciation stay the same; the month ends at about ₦5,000, roughly break-even. Every pricing decision should be judged by what it does to days rented.

Finding customers

Days rented come from steady channels rather than one-off bookings. Hotels and shortlet hosts need cars for guests, event planners need cars for weddings and conferences, and companies need cars for visiting staff. A written arrangement with two or three such clients is worth more than advertising alone, because it fills weekdays as well as weekends. Some operators also list on travel and event platforms, but compare any platform's commission against what it adds in days rented.

Setting daily rates

Work backwards from your costs. Add up the monthly fixed costs per car (insurance, depreciation, tracking, a share of admin), divide by the number of days you realistically expect to rent it, then add the driver's pay, wear and your margin. Publish clear terms:

  1. What a day means: 10 or 12 hours, and the overtime charge after that.
  2. Whether fuel is included or paid by the customer.
  3. Out-of-town charges and driver's night allowance.
  4. Deposit, cancellation terms and when payment is due.
  5. Who pays for fines, tolls and parking.

What to check first

  • Insurance confirmed in writing for hire and reward use.
  • A written rental agreement reviewed by a lawyer.
  • A way to verify customers' identity before self-drive hire.
  • A service schedule for every car.
  • Enough cash to cover a month with few bookings.

Where Pryme fits

A rental business with a Pryme Business Account can bill corporate clients through invoicing, take deposits by bank-transfer checkout (free), and issue a verifiable receipt with VerifyDoc.ai. For airport work, see the airport pickup business.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to start a car hire business in Nigeria?

The cars are the biggest cost, followed by comprehensive insurance (at least 5% of each car's insured value a year under NAICOM's 2023 rule), tracking, papers and drivers. Get current quotes for each before you start.

How much do car rental companies charge per day in Lagos?

Rates vary by car, hours and whether a driver and fuel are included. Our ₦50,000 a day is an example only; compare published rates in your area and price from your own costs.

Is car hire business profitable in Nigeria?

It can be if cars are rented on enough days. In our example, three cars rented 15 days a month leave about ₦605,000 after depreciation, but at 10 days a month the business barely breaks even.

What insurance do I need for a car rental business?

At minimum third-party insurance, but rental businesses usually need comprehensive cover that explicitly includes hire and reward use. Confirm the wording with the insurer in writing.
