Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Using your car as collateral: the Bill of Sale explained

Pledging a car for a loan: how a Bill of Sale or chattel mortgage works, why lenders register it on the National Collateral Registry, and what to check.

The short answer

When you use your car as collateral, you keep driving it but give the lender a security interest: the right to take and sell the car if you default. This used to be documented by a Bill of Sale or chattel mortgage; under the Secured Transactions in Movable Assets Act 2017, lenders register security over movable assets such as vehicles on the National Collateral Registry. Before you sign, check the default terms and ask how the registration will be discharged.

Car-backed loans are common in Nigerian cities: a business owner pledges a vehicle to raise working capital, or a driver pledges a car to fund repairs. The lender wants certainty that it can recover its money; the borrower wants to keep using the car and get it back free once the loan is repaid. This guide explains the documents involved and what to check. It is information, not legal advice.

Key terms

Collateral
An asset you pledge so that the lender can recover the loan from it if you do not repay.
Security interest
The lender's legal right over the pledged asset.
Bill of Sale
A written document dealing with rights in personal goods. Used as security, it gives a lender rights over goods that stay in the borrower's hands.
Chattel mortgage
A mortgage over movable property ("chattels") such as a car, rather than land.
National Collateral Registry
The registry for security interests in movable assets set up under the 2017 Act, where lenders record their interest so others can find it.
Discharge
Removal of the lender's interest after the loan is repaid.

How a car-backed loan usually works

  1. The lender inspects and values the car and checks the ownership documents.
  2. It offers a loan for a part of the value, not the full value, to allow for depreciation and sale costs.
  3. You sign a loan agreement and a security document over the car.
  4. The lender registers its interest. Lenders often also keep original documents, ask for comprehensive insurance naming them, or fit a tracker; the agreement should list each.
  5. You keep driving the car and repay on schedule.
  6. On full repayment, the lender returns documents and discharges the registration.

Why registration matters to you

  • As a borrower: registration makes the lender's claim visible. When you repay, insist the lender discharges it, or the car may still appear encumbered when you sell it.
  • As a buyer of a used car: ask the seller whether the car is pledged to any lender, and search the registry where you can, because a registered interest may follow the car.
  • On your credit report: CRC Credit Bureau's FAQs list a "security" section among the contents of a credit report, so collateral linked to a facility can appear there.

A worked example

Example only, with invented figures. Your car is valued at ₦8,000,000. The lender offers 50% of value, ₦4,000,000, over 12 months at 3% a month on a flat basis. Interest is ₦120,000 a month, or ₦1,440,000 in total, and you repay ₦5,440,000, about ₦453,333 a month. If you default and the lender sells the car for ₦6,000,000, the agreement and the law decide how sale costs, the outstanding balance and any surplus are treated. Ask that question before you sign.

What to check before you sign

  • The exact default clause: how many days late counts, any notice or cure period, and whether the whole loan becomes due. See acceleration clauses.
  • What happens on repossession: notice, sale process, how the price is set and whether any surplus comes back to you.
  • Every fee: valuation, tracking, insurance, registration, discharge.
  • Whether the lender is licensed: a bank on the CBN lists, or for app lenders, the FCCPC approved list; see how to check.
  • Who holds the original vehicle papers and when they come back.
  • A written commitment to discharge the registration within a set time after repayment.

When the loan is repaid

  1. Get a written statement showing a zero balance.
  2. Collect any original documents and spare keys the lender held.
  3. Ask for confirmation that the registration has been discharged, and keep it with the car's papers.
  4. Remove the lender from the insurance policy if it was named as an interested party.

Risks to weigh

A car-backed loan can be cheaper than unsecured credit because the lender has a fallback. The cost of that is the car itself: if your income drops, you can lose the vehicle you may need to earn. Compare it with unsecured options using APR vs flat fees, and borrow only what the purpose requires.

Think also about the car's value over the loan term. Vehicles lose value with age and mileage, so a loan sized at a high share of today's valuation can end up larger than the car is worth if repayments fall behind. A shorter term, or a smaller loan, keeps you on the right side of that line and makes the lender's fallback less likely to be needed.

Where Pryme fits

Loans on Spaces, lent by Solid Allianze MFB, do not take your car as collateral; they are offered based on how your account is run and can only be spent with Spaces merchants.

Questions people ask

Can I use my car as collateral for a loan in Nigeria?

Yes. Many lenders accept vehicles as security, document it with a security agreement and register their interest on the National Collateral Registry.

What is a Bill of Sale for a car loan?

A written document giving a lender rights over goods, such as a car, that stay with the borrower. It has been used as security for loans.

How do I know if a used car is pledged to a lender?

Ask the seller in writing, check the papers, and search the National Collateral Registry where you can before paying.

What happens to my car if I default on a car-backed loan?

The lender can enforce its security as the agreement and law allow, usually by taking and selling the car. Read the default and repossession terms first.
