Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Working remotely from Nigeria on a long visit home: permissions

Before you work from Lagos or Abuja for weeks: your employer's approval, data rules, your visa or residence abroad and Nigeria's tax tests.

The short answer

As a Nigerian citizen you need no visa to enter Nigeria, so the permissions that matter are elsewhere: your employer's or client's written approval to work from Nigeria, the data-handling rules in your contract and in Nigeria's Data Protection Act, the absence rules of your visa or residence status abroad, and Nigeria's tax residence tests if the stay runs long.

Working from home, when home is Lagos, Enugu or Kano, sounds simple: you have a laptop, a generator or inverter and family who are glad to see you. In practice four separate sets of permission are involved, and only one of them is Nigerian. This guide takes them in the order that usually causes trouble, with what each one needs from you. It covers employees and freelancers; where the two differ, it says so. None of it is legal or tax advice.

1. Entering Nigeria: the easy part

In November 2022 the Nigeria Immigration Service's spokesman told the News Agency of Nigeria that Nigerians need no visa to enter Nigeria, and that dual citizens may enter on a Nigerian passport even if it has expired, so they can renew it before leaving. Nothing in that statement deals with working; there is no Nigerian "remote work" permit for citizens because none is needed to be present. If you travel on a foreign passport only, your entry permission is a visa question, and you should check what the visa you are given allows.

2. Your employer or client: the permission that matters most

For employees, working from another country is almost always a contract question. Many employment contracts name a place of work, and many companies have a policy on working abroad that sets a maximum number of days and requires written approval. The reasons are practical: the employer may have tax, payroll or social security duties in a country where you work, its insurance may not cover you there, and its security team may restrict which countries can reach company systems.

  • Ask for approval in writing, with your dates and city.
  • Ask whether company systems can be reached from Nigeria and on which network setup.
  • Confirm your working hours against the time difference; West Africa Time does not move for daylight saving.
  • Ask whether the employer's insurance and duty-of-care policy covers you while you are there.

Freelancers have more freedom, but read your client contracts. Some restrict where work is done or where client data may be stored, and some government or health-sector clients forbid offshore access entirely.

3. Data: what you carry and where it sits

If you handle personal data, Nigeria's Data Protection Act 2023 sets principles any controller must follow: lawful, fair and transparent processing, purpose limitation, data minimisation, keeping data no longer than needed, and appropriate security (sections 24 and 39). Section 40 requires a controller to tell the Nigeria Data Protection Commission within 72 hours of a breach likely to risk people's rights. Your employer or client is usually the controller, but if a laptop is stolen in Lagos, you will be the one reporting it to them, so know who to call.

4. Your status abroad: absence rules

If you hold a work visa, a residence permit or are on a route to settlement or citizenship in the country you live in, long absences can matter. Some routes count days outside the country against you; some visas are tied to working for a sponsor in that country. These rules differ by country and by visa type, and change, so read the official immigration page for your status before booking. The country guides in this library cover several of them; for employees of Nigerian firms living abroad, see working abroad for a Nigerian employer.

5. Tax: when a visit turns into residence

Nigeria's residence tests, as summarised by PwC (reviewed 29 May 2026), include spending at least 183 days in Nigeria in any 12-month period, keeping a permanent home available for your use, or having substantial economic or immediate family ties. PwC also notes that employment income is treated as derived from Nigeria where the employee is resident and works wholly or partly in Nigeria and that pay is not fully taxed in the country of tax residence. The detail, with a worked day count, is in the tax risk of a long visit.

Steps before you go

  1. Get written approval from your employer or main clients, with dates.
  2. Check the absence rules of your visa or residence status abroad.
  3. Count your days in Nigeria across any rolling 12 months.
  4. Set up device encryption and know your breach-reporting contact.
  5. Keep a short travel log: dates, city, who you worked for.

Where Pryme fits

If you freelance while home, a Pryme Business Account opened from any country keeps client payments in USD, GBP or EUR as they arrive and lets you convert to naira with Swap when you choose, with the rate and the fee shown before you approve. See business multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Do I need a visa to work remotely in Nigeria as a Nigerian?

No visa is needed for a Nigerian citizen to enter, per the NIS statement in 2022. What you need is your employer's or client's approval and attention to your tax and immigration position abroad.

Can my employer refuse to let me work from Nigeria?

Yes, if your contract or policy names a place of work or requires approval. Ask in writing and keep the reply.

Does the Nigeria Data Protection Act apply when I work from Lagos?

It applies to processing of personal data in Nigeria. Your employer is usually the controller, but you must follow its security rules and report any loss quickly; the Act gives controllers 72 hours to notify the NDPC of a risky breach.

Will working from Nigeria for three months affect my visa abroad?

It might, depending on your visa or settlement route. Check the official immigration page for your status before you travel.
