Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Working from Nigeria on a long visit: tax risk for freelancers

Nigeria's residence tests under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, the 183-day count, and what changes for a freelancer abroad who stays home too long.

The short answer

Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 you are tax resident in Nigeria if any one test applies, including spending at least 183 days in Nigeria in a 12-month period or keeping a permanent home or habitual abode there. A resident is taxed on income wherever it arises, so a freelancer abroad who stays home too long can bring all their client income into Nigeria's tax net, alongside the tax rules of the country they normally live in.

Long visits home are common: a wedding season that runs into a few months, caring for a parent, a newborn, or simply working from Lagos while the weather abroad is grim. If you freelance, your clients rarely care where you open your laptop. Tax authorities do. This guide explains Nigeria's residence tests as they stand under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, how the day count works, which other tests can catch you even on a shorter stay, and what to keep on file. It is information, not tax advice; for your own position, speak to a tax adviser in both countries.

The residence tests, one by one

PwC's Nigeria summary, last reviewed on 29 May 2026, lists the tests. You are resident in Nigeria if any of these applies, and non-resident only if none does:

  1. You are domiciled in Nigeria.
  2. You maintain a permanent home available for your domestic use in Nigeria.
  3. You have a place of habitual abode in Nigeria.
  4. You spend at least 183 days in Nigeria within any 12-month period, including temporary absences.
  5. You have substantial economic ties or immediate family ties in Nigeria.
  6. You serve as a Nigerian diplomat or diplomatic agent abroad.

A commentary by S.P.A. Ajibade & Co., published on Mondaq in October 2025, places these rules in sections 144 to 158 of the Act, with definitions in section 202. It adds a test PwC words differently: a Nigerian who earns employment or business income wholly or partly in Nigeria. It also points out that the Act's wording on ties uses "economic and immediate family ties" while commentators read it as "or", and that neither term is defined. That uncertainty is the real risk for diaspora freelancers: many still own a family house, run a Nigerian account and have parents or children at home.

What being resident changes

Both sources say a Nigerian resident is taxed on worldwide income, whether or not it is brought into Nigeria. A non-resident is taxed in Nigeria only on income derived from Nigeria. For a freelancer, that is the difference between Nigeria taxing the fees you invoice to clients in London, Toronto or Houston, and Nigeria having no claim on them at all.

Your positionWhat Nigeria can tax (per the sources)What else applies
Non-resident, short visitIncome derived from Nigeria only, for example a Nigerian client's feeYour home country taxes you as usual
Resident under any testWorldwide income, including foreign clients' feesYour home country may also tax you; treaty relief may apply
Resident in both countriesWorldwide incomeA double taxation treaty, where one exists, decides tie-breaks and credits

The Mondaq commentary notes that relief for people resident in two places may be available under specific double taxation treaties, through foreign tax credits or by giving one country the exclusive right to tax. Whether a treaty exists between Nigeria and your country, and what it says, is a question to check before you travel, not after.

How the 183 days add up: a labelled example

Example only. Ada lives in Manchester and freelances as a UX designer. She arrives in Lagos on 1 November and plans to fly back on 30 April. November has 30 days, December 31, January 31, February 28, March 31 and April 30: 181 days in all. If she then returns for three weeks in August, she has spent 202 days in Nigeria inside a 12-month window that starts on 1 November. Because the test runs over "any 12-month period", not only the calendar year, splitting the stay across two tax years does not help her.

The same example also shows why temporary absences matter. PwC's wording includes them in the count, so a long weekend in Accra in the middle of the stay may not reset anything. Keep your own log of entry and exit dates, and keep the boarding passes.

What to check before a long stay

  • Count the days you will spend in Nigeria in every rolling 12-month window, not just the calendar year.
  • List your Nigerian ties: a home kept available to you, a spouse or children living there, a business or employment in Nigeria.
  • Check whether your home country has a double taxation treaty with Nigeria and what its tie-breaker says.
  • Ask your adviser how your home country treats a long absence for its own residence rules.
  • Keep invoices, contracts and client addresses that show where the work was contracted and for whom.
  • If you become resident, note that PwC says individual returns are due within 90 days after the end of the tax year, which runs from 1 January to 31 December, and that state tax offices collect tax from most individuals.

If you think a stay could make you resident, plan it rather than discover it. Some freelancers shorten the stay, others accept residence for one year and register for a Tax ID; the Nigeria library explains how Nigeria taxes freelancers' dollar income. The wider question of where you pay tax on Nigerian clients' fees is covered in freelancing abroad for Nigerian clients: where you pay tax, and the visa, employer and data side of a long stay in working remotely from Nigeria on a visit.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can be opened from any country and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each, so client payments stay in the currency they arrived in wherever you happen to be working. Statements and verifiable receipts, made with our partner VerifyDoc.ai, help you show an adviser what was paid, when and by whom. See business multicurrency accounts and receipts.

Questions people ask

How many days can I stay in Nigeria without becoming tax resident?

The day test is 183 days in any 12-month period, including temporary absences. But it is only one test: a permanent home, habitual abode or substantial economic or family ties can make you resident with fewer days.

If I am tax resident in Nigeria, does Nigeria tax my UK or US clients' fees?

Per PwC and the Mondaq commentary, a resident is taxed on worldwide income. Your home country may tax it too; a double taxation treaty, if one exists, sets the relief.

Does keeping my family house in Nigeria make me resident?

It can, if it is a permanent home available for your domestic use. The Act does not define every term, so ask an adviser how your circumstances read.

Do I need to file in Nigeria after one long visit?

Only if you are resident or have Nigerian-source income. PwC says individual returns are due within 90 days after the tax year ends on 31 December.
