Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Freelancer abroad with Nigerian clients: where you pay tax

Your country of residence taxes the income; Nigeria may still deduct withholding tax. How residence, WHT and credits fit together, with an example.

The short answer

You generally pay income tax where you are tax resident. If you are not Nigerian resident, Nigeria taxes only Nigerian-source income, and the NiDCOM diaspora guide states that services physically performed outside Nigeria are not taxable in Nigeria. Nigerian clients may still deduct withholding tax (10% for a non-resident's professional fees under the 2024 regulations); whether you can credit it at home depends on your country's rules and any tax treaty with Nigeria.

Working from London, Atlanta or Calgary for clients in Lagos is now ordinary. The tax question has two parts: which country is entitled to tax your income, and what happens to the tax a Nigerian client deducts before paying you. Getting them confused is how freelancers end up paying twice. This is information, not advice; your own adviser should confirm your position.

Step one: where are you resident?

Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, as PwC summarises it, an individual is Nigerian resident if they have domicile, a habitual abode, family or economic ties in Nigeria, or are present for 183 days or more. Residents are taxed on worldwide income; non-residents only on Nigerian-source income. Your country of residence applies its own tests, and most tax residents on worldwide income, so your Nigerian client fees almost always belong on your return there.

If both countries treat you as resident, for example because your family home is still in Lagos, a tax treaty decides. The UK-Nigeria agreement looks first at permanent home, then centre of vital interests, habitual abode and nationality. Not every country has a treaty with Nigeria; see Nigeria's tax treaties and the tie-breaker rules.

Step two: is the income Nigerian-source?

The NiDCOM-hosted diaspora guide to the 2026 reforms states that income for services physically rendered outside Nigeria is not taxable in Nigeria unless you are tax resident. So, on that reading, design work done in Manchester for a Lagos client is not Nigerian-source, while a week of workshops delivered in Abuja is. Keep a record of where each piece of work was done.

Step three: the withholding tax your client deducts

Nigerian companies and organisations must deduct withholding tax from service payments under the Deduction of Tax at Source (Withholding) Regulations 2024. For non-residents, PwC lists 10% on professional, consultancy, technical and management fees and 5% on other services, and describes the non-resident company deduction on such fees as the final tax. The rate doubles without a valid tax number. In practice many finance teams deduct on every foreign invoice without considering where the work was done.

How it fits together: an example

Example only: a UK-resident freelancer invoices a Lagos company ₦3,000,000 for work done entirely in the UK, and the company deducts 10%.

ItemAmount (example)
Invoice₦3,000,000
Nigerian WHT deducted₦300,000
Received₦2,700,000
Declared on UK returnThe full ₦3,000,000, converted to pounds

The UK taxes the whole fee because the freelancer is UK resident. Whether the ₦300,000 can be credited depends on the treaty and whether Nigeria was entitled to tax it. The 1987 UK-Nigeria agreement gives credit for Nigerian tax payable under Nigerian law consistent with the agreement; if the work was done wholly abroad and Nigeria should not have taxed it, the home authority may refuse the credit and the route is to ask the client not to deduct, or to seek a refund in Nigeria. Get advice before assuming either outcome.

Reducing the risk of double tax

  1. Put the place of performance in the contract and on each invoice ("services performed in the United Kingdom").
  2. Retrieve a Nigerian Tax ID so any deduction is not doubled; see Tax ID from abroad.
  3. Ask the client before the first payment whether it will deduct WHT and on what basis.
  4. Collect every WHT receipt.
  5. Keep a day log if you work in Nigeria during visits.
  6. Take treaty and credit questions to an adviser in your country of residence.

Trading through a company abroad

If you invoice through your own company registered where you live, the company, not you, is the supplier. Its residence follows its own country's corporate rules, and Nigerian withholding on its consultancy fees is described by PwC as the final Nigerian tax for a non-resident company. Your personal tax then arises when the company pays you salary or dividends at home. The invoice, contract and bank account must all be in the company's name for this to hold together.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving Nigerian client income off the home return because tax was already deducted in Nigeria.
  • Assuming every Nigerian deduction can be credited at home.
  • Converting naira income at a rate you cannot evidence; keep the rate used on each conversion.
  • Mixing Nigerian client money with family transfers in one account, which makes income hard to prove.

If you spend long periods in Nigeria

Extended stays can change both sides of the picture: work done in Nigeria is Nigerian-source, and 183 days in Nigeria makes you resident under the NTA. See long visits and freelancer tax risk. The Nigerian side for residents is explained in do Nigerian freelancers pay tax on dollar income.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account opened from abroad receives naira and foreign currency with local details, and Swap converts when you choose, rate shown first. The Finance agent can match each payment to its invoice and WHT receipt so your home return and any credit claim rest on complete records.

Questions people ask

Do I pay tax in Nigeria if I freelance from abroad for Nigerian clients?

If you are not Nigerian resident, Nigeria taxes only Nigerian-source income, and the NiDCOM diaspora guide says services performed outside Nigeria are not taxable there. You declare the income where you live.

Why did my Nigerian client deduct 10%?

The 2024 withholding regulations set 10% on non-residents' professional and consultancy fees. Many clients deduct on all foreign invoices.

Can I claim Nigerian withholding tax back in my country?

It depends on your country's rules and any treaty. The UK-Nigeria agreement gives credit for Nigerian tax charged consistently with the treaty. Ask an adviser where you live.

Does 183 days in Nigeria make me tax resident?

Presence of 183 days or more is one of the NTA 2025 residence tests, alongside domicile, habitual abode and family or economic ties.
