Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Government loans for women in Nigeria: federal and state schemes

Where federal and state credit has set aside money for women, from the CBN's MSMEDF 60% quota to state women funds, and how to apply.

The short answer

The largest documented federal quota for women is in the CBN's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund, which reserved 60% of its ₦220 billion for women entrepreneurs, lent through banks and microfinance banks. States run their own women's funds and windows, usually through the ministry of women affairs or the state enterprise agency. In every case you apply through a named institution and repay a loan; fees paid to individuals are a sign of fraud.

Women run a large share of Nigeria's small businesses, from market stalls to salons and food processing, yet often have less collateral to offer lenders. Several public schemes have tried to correct this with quotas or women-only windows. This guide covers what we could confirm, how these schemes reach borrowers and how to apply without losing money to fake portals.

The federal quota: the CBN's MSMEDF

The CBN's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund was set up with seed capital of ₦220 billion. According to reporting of the CBN's guidelines in July 2020:

FeatureWhat it said
Share reserved for women60%
Persons with disabilities2% of the wholesale component
Start-ups10%
How funds reach borrowersWholesale to participating financial institutions, including microfinance banks
Commercial component90% of the fund; micro and SME lending at a 50:50 ratio

The key practical point is that you do not apply to the CBN. You apply to a participating bank or microfinance bank, which assesses you and lends. Ask a microfinance bank directly whether it has a fund-backed product for women and what its current terms are. Because the reporting dates from 2020, check the CBN's current guidelines before relying on the quota.

Other federal schemes that included women

  • Targeted Credit Facility (2020): open to households and SMEs hit by COVID-19, through NIRSAL MFB; up to ₦3 million for households. It is a loan, and repayment is now being pursued; see TCF repayment.
  • TraderMoni: interest-free loans for market traders; status unconfirmed as at October 2026; see TraderMoni.
  • YouthCred (2025): CREDICORP's consumer credit for ages 18 to 39, open to young women on the same terms as men.
  • SMEDAN grants: open to registered MSMEs, including women-owned ones.

State women's funds

Many states run women's empowerment funds or reserve a share of their MSME schemes for women. They are usually found through:

  • The state Ministry of Women Affairs.
  • The state's enterprise, employment or SME agency.
  • The cooperative department, since many women's schemes lend through cooperatives.
  • Any office that announces an empowerment programme; ask which ministry or bank actually disburses.

See our method for finding your state's scheme and confirming it is official.

How to apply: a checklist

  1. Register your business with SMEDAN and, if you can, with CAC; see getting the SMEDAN number.
  2. Keep a bank account in your own or your business's name, with trading income flowing through it.
  3. Join or form a cooperative or association; many women's windows lend through groups.
  4. Ask the bank or ministry for the written terms: amount, rate, fees, tenor and what happens if you miss a payment.
  5. Never pay a 'processing' fee to a person to be 'shortlisted'.

A worked example

Example only. Halima sells grains in Kaduna. Her cooperative is offered a group loan through a microfinance bank under a women's fund. She borrows ₦300,000 at a stated 2% a month flat over 6 months. Interest is ₦300,000 × 2% × 6 = ₦36,000, so she repays ₦336,000, or ₦56,000 a month. Before accepting she compares that with her cooperative's own rate, using our guide to flat fees and APR.

Grant, loan or in-kind support?

Women's empowerment programmes come in three forms, and it pays to know which you are applying for:

Grant
Money you do not repay, usually small and competitive. Example: SMEDAN's 2020 conditional grant of up to ₦50,000 per registered MSME.
Loan
Money you repay, sometimes at a subsidised rate. Example: fund-backed microfinance loans under the MSMEDF, or the 2020 TCF at 5% then 9% a year.
In-kind support
Equipment such as sewing machines, grinders or freezers, sometimes with training. Ask whether you must repay its value.

Many women have been surprised years later to find that an 'empowerment' payment was a loan. The TCF is the clearest case: some beneficiaries treated it as a palliative, but the CBN's guidelines set interest and a tenor, and deductions were reported in 2026. Before you accept any money, ask for the written terms and keep a copy.

If you have a disability

The MSMEDF reporting also noted 2% of the wholesale component for economically active persons living with disabilities. Ask participating institutions about this window as well.

Group lending: read the joint liability clause

Many women's schemes lend to groups, where members guarantee one another. That makes approval easier, but if one member stops paying, the others may have to cover her share or lose access to the next loan. Before joining, ask how the group handles a member who defaults, and whether your own savings with the cooperative can be used to cover someone else.

Where Pryme fits

Women running businesses in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt in sectors such as grocery, eateries, salons and pharmacies can open a Pryme Business Account and apply to join Spaces, which helps lenders and schemes see a clear record of trading.

Questions people ask

Are there government loans for women in Nigeria?

Yes. The CBN's MSMEDF reserved 60% for women, lent through banks and microfinance banks, and many states run women's funds through their women affairs ministries or enterprise agencies.

How do I apply for the CBN women's fund?

You apply to a participating bank or microfinance bank, not to the CBN. Ask the bank whether it has a fund-backed product and what its current terms are.

Are women's empowerment loans interest-free?

Some state schemes are low-interest or interest-free; fund-backed bank loans usually charge interest. The written offer will show the rate.

Do I need a cooperative to get a women's loan?

Not always, but many state and fund-backed schemes lend through cooperatives and associations, so membership can help.
