Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

SMEDAN registration: how to get the number lenders ask for

How to register a business with SMEDAN, what it costs, what the SMEDAN number (SUIN) is and which grants and lenders have asked for it.

The short answer

You register on SMEDAN's online MSME portal, enter details about yourself and your business, and receive a SMEDAN Unique Identification Number (SUIN). Registration has been free; nobody should charge you to do it. The number has been required for SMEDAN grants such as the 2020 conditional grant and is increasingly asked for by government-linked lenders.

Many Nigerian small-business owners first hear of SMEDAN when a grant form or a lender asks, 'What is your SMEDAN number?' This guide explains what the number is, how to get it, what it costs and where it actually matters, so that you do the registration once, properly, and on the right site.

What the SMEDAN number is

SMEDAN is the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria. When a business registers with it, SMEDAN issues a SMEDAN Unique Identification Number, often shortened to SUIN. It identifies your business on the national register of micro, small and medium enterprises. It is separate from your CAC registration number and from your tax identification number.

SUIN
SMEDAN's identifier for your business on its MSME register
CAC number
Your business name or company registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission
TIN
Your tax identification number

Steps to register

The portal address given in SMEDAN-linked guidance was smedanregister.ng. Before entering anything, open SMEDAN's official website yourself and confirm the current registration link from there, because fake copies of government portals circulate.

  1. Open SMEDAN's official website and follow its MSME registration link.
  2. Create an account with an email address and phone number you control.
  3. Enter your personal details as the business owner. Have your NIN and BVN ready in case the form asks for them.
  4. Enter business details: name, sector, location, number of staff, and CAC number if your business is registered.
  5. Review and submit, then save or print the confirmation that shows your SUIN.
  6. Keep the SUIN with your other business documents; you will be asked for it on grant and loan forms.

What it costs

SMEDAN registration was described as free. If anyone asks you to pay a 'SMEDAN registration fee' into a personal account, or charges to 'speed up' your number, do not pay. Business centres may charge for their time if they fill the form for you, but the registration itself should cost nothing. See how to check a government scheme is real.

Which schemes and lenders ask for it

WhereWhat we could confirm
SMEDAN conditional grant (2020)Open to SMEDAN-registered MSMEs, up to ₦50,000 each
Funding from other bodiesRegistration presented as giving priority for public, private and donor funding
Partner and government-linked lendersCommonly ask for the SUIN as part of verification; check each lender
Ordinary bank loansUsually rely on statements, credit report and collateral rather than the SUIN

For what SMEDAN can and cannot do for you after registration, see SMEDAN loans beyond the grant. If your business has members rather than a single owner, our guide to cooperative registration covers another route to credit.

A worked example

Example only. Musa sells phone accessories in Kano. He registers with SMEDAN on a Monday, receives his SUIN and stores a PDF of the confirmation. Three weeks later a government-linked asset finance window asks applicants for their SUIN, CAC number and six months of statements. Because he already has the SUIN, his application is complete on the first day the window opens, while others are still queuing at business centres.

Common problems

  • Lost SUIN. Log back into the portal with the email you used, or contact SMEDAN through its official channels.
  • Wrong business details. Correct them before applying for anything; a mismatch with your CAC record can stall an application.
  • Registered twice. Use one SUIN consistently and ask SMEDAN to resolve the duplicate.

Why the number matters more than it used to

Government support for small businesses is increasingly run through registers. Rather than inviting applications from anyone, agencies draw on businesses already on a list, then verify them against identity records. The 2020 SMEDAN conditional grant worked this way: only registered MSMEs could apply. YouthCred, CREDICORP's credit scheme for 18 to 39 year olds, was set to extend to youth-owned businesses, using BVN and NIN for digital verification. When the next window opens, businesses already registered can move first.

Registration also gives you a reason to tidy your records. The details you enter, such as sector, staff numbers and location, should match what you will later tell a lender. A business that says it has five staff on SMEDAN and two on a loan application raises questions.

Keeping your record current

  • Update your phone number and email if they change, so that notices reach you.
  • Add your CAC number when you register the business name or company.
  • Note the date you registered; some forms ask for it.

Where Pryme fits

Grant and loan forms usually ask for a business account in the business's name. A Pryme Business Account can be opened from any country, and verifiable statements generated with VerifyDoc.ai let a lender confirm a statement has not been altered; see verifiable receipts and statements.

Questions people ask

How do I get my SMEDAN number?

Register your business on SMEDAN's MSME portal, reached from SMEDAN's official website. On completion you receive a SMEDAN Unique Identification Number (SUIN).

Is SMEDAN registration free?

Yes, it was described as free. Do not pay anyone a registration fee; a business centre may charge only for its own time.

Is the SMEDAN number the same as a CAC number?

No. The CAC number registers your business name or company; the SUIN places your business on SMEDAN's MSME register.

Can I register with SMEDAN without CAC?

Many micro businesses are not CAC-registered. The guidance we found did not list CAC registration as a condition for the SUIN, but some grants and lenders do ask for it, so check each scheme and the form itself.
