Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Can you withdraw dollar cash from a domiciliary account?

What the rules say about withdrawing dollars, pounds or euros in cash from a Nigerian domiciliary account, what happens in practice, and alternatives.

The short answer

Yes. Ordinary domiciliary account holders are entitled to access their funds, and the CBN's 2026 Foreign Exchange Manual removed the curbs introduced in 2020. In practice, cash availability varies by bank and branch, so ask your bank in advance, and be aware that large cash imports deposited in an account can only be withdrawn as cash.

What the rules say

The legal basis for domiciliary accounts is section 17 of the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, which lets any person open and operate a foreign currency account with an authorised dealer. The CBN sets the operating rules.

  • 2020: the CBN placed restrictions on how ordinary domiciliary accounts could be funded and used.
  • June 2023: following new foreign exchange guidance, the CBN said ordinary domiciliary account holders would have unfettered and unrestricted access to their funds, and lifted restrictions on cash deposits subject to proper know-your-customer checks.
  • 1 June 2026: the fourth edition of the Foreign Exchange Manual took effect. Published summaries say it confirms unrestricted access to ordinary domiciliary accounts, removes Form A for outward remittances from self-funded accounts, and allows telegraphic transfers of up to $10,000 a day.

One older rule still matters. Under section 21 of the Act, foreign cash above $10,000 imported into Nigeria and deposited in a domiciliary account may only be withdrawn as cash, and only exported as cash.

What happens in practice

Being entitled to cash and getting it on the day are different things. Banks need physical notes in the right currency and denominations, and branches may hold little. In September 2026, the press reported that the CBN was looking into complaints that some banks had imposed withdrawal limits, said certain currencies were unavailable, or delayed valid requests. No circular had been published at that point.

How to withdraw without wasted trips

  1. Call ahead. Ask your branch whether it has the amount and currency you need, and whether you must book the withdrawal.
  2. Give notice for large sums. Many banks ask for one or more working days' notice.
  3. Take ID. A valid ID and your account details. The bank may ask the purpose.
  4. Count and check at the counter. Check notes for damage before you leave; damaged or older notes can be hard to spend abroad.
  5. Get a receipt. Keep the withdrawal slip and any charges listed.

If your bank says no

  1. Ask for the refusal and the reason in writing, by email or through the bank's app.
  2. Ask when the currency will be available and book a date.
  3. If the delay continues, file a formal complaint with the bank and keep the reference number.
  4. If the bank does not resolve it, escalate to the CBN's consumer protection channel. Our guide to complaining about a bank or fintech explains how.

Keep your tone calm and your records tidy. A clear written trail with dates is what a regulator will ask for.

Charges and limits

Banks may charge for foreign cash withdrawals or for maintaining the account; ask for the bank's pricing guide. Some banks set their own daily or per-visit limits, and some will only pay large amounts in particular denominations. If a bank refuses or delays a valid withdrawal, ask for the reason in writing and the policy it relies on.

Alternatives to cash

NeedCash routeAlternative
Spending on a trip abroadWithdraw dollars or pounds before you flyHold the currency in an account and pay by card or transfer at your destination
Paying a school or hospital abroadCarry cashTransfer directly from a foreign currency balance to the institution
Giving money to someone abroadHand over cashSend from a foreign currency balance to their local account
Changing to nairaSell cash at a BDCConvert in your account, seeing the rate first

For travel, note that the CBN's personal and business travel allowances follow their own rules: from 1 June 2026 up to 25% can be taken in cash, with the rest paid electronically.

Worked example: a family trip

Example only. Femi is taking his family to London and needs about £1,500.

  1. He calls his bank a week ahead. The branch has dollars but not pounds.
  2. Rather than take dollars and convert in London, losing on two spreads, he moves pounds from his pound balance to his debit card for spending.
  3. He withdraws a small amount of pound cash on arrival from a cash machine for taxis and tips.
  4. He keeps the bank's notes on what was available, so next time he knows to ask earlier.

The lesson is not that cash is bad. It is that cash is the hardest form of foreign currency to get, carry and keep safe, so it is worth using only for the part of a trip that needs it.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not a foreign cash product. A Personal Account holds USD, GBP and EUR alongside naira, with local details for each, so you can receive and hold foreign currency without carrying notes. Convert with Swap when you choose, with the rate first and the fee on its own line. See multicurrency and our comparison of domiciliary and multicurrency accounts. For saving in dollars, see saving in dollars in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Can I withdraw dollars from my domiciliary account in Nigeria?

Yes. Ordinary domiciliary account holders are entitled to access their funds, and the 2026 Foreign Exchange Manual confirmed this. Ask your branch in advance whether it has the notes you need.

Is there a limit on dollar cash withdrawal from a domiciliary account?

There is no single published national cap for ordinary accounts in the sources we reviewed, but individual banks may set their own limits or ask for notice. Ask your bank for its policy in writing.

Why did my bank refuse to give me dollars in cash?

Usually because the branch did not have enough notes, or the bank applied its own limit. In September 2026 the CBN was reported to be looking into complaints of this kind.

Can I deposit dollar cash into my domiciliary account?

Yes, subject to the bank's know-your-customer checks. Imported foreign cash over $10,000 deposited in a domiciliary account can only be withdrawn as cash under section 21 of the Act.
